APPEARANCE: Black as night. No light comes through at any point, no red hues around the edges, no lighter brown areas near the top, this is just black. The head has a light coffee color and, as with many other Green Flash brews, a strong staying power. Lacing is not bad.
SMELL: Not as intense in the nose as some other Green Flash beers are the Double Stout still provides a solid aromatic experience. Chocolate is the dominant smell with a very nice nutty roastiness right behind it. Wow. Could be stronger, but wonderful nonetheless.
TASTE: This is excellent beer. The most noticeable characteristic here is the nuttiness. It is unexpected and blends beautifully with the chocolate, oatmeal and roasted malt flavors. Coffee, tiny hints of cherry and pepper also work their way in as the beer warms, making this a wonderfully complex brew.
MOUTHFEEL: Big, rich and full bodied - creamy, silky smooth and most importantly; comforting. Unlike some other big, Double Stouts, this one is much easier drinking. The 8.8% is nowhere to be seen (or felt) here.
OVERALL: The Double Stout seems to straddle the line between a regular and an Imperial Stout. It isn’t quite as rich as some Imperials, but it is far more complex than the average sessionable stout.
