Aggressive pour yields an opaque onyx body with a frothy one inch mocha head that slowly dissipates, leaving sheets of holy lacing.

Nutty, roasty malt, coffee grounds, and dark chocolate form the initial aroma. Tar and tobacco add complexity, along with subtle dark cherry, vanilla, and molasses.

Flavor is initially chocolate dominant, complemented by slightly tart cherries. Roast character becomes evident mid palate, and carries into a fairly bitter, coffee grounds finish. Nutty notes and light floral hops emerge. Raspberries surface in subsequent sips. I'm burping malted milk balls.

Body is fairly thick and smooth, with carbonation unexpectedly spritzy. There's a touch of alcohol warmth.

The tart cherry/raspberry notes are slightly overwhelming, but it lacks the acrid character present in some roast malt dominated examples. Chocolate and roast character are in good balance, and coffee isn't over the top. Wish the carbonation were lower. Bitterness is slightly higher than I'd prefer.

355ml bottle poured into tulip 31/7/14

A black liquid with a 3 finger mocha head that has great retention ever so slowly falling to a thick film, it only leaves rings after the foam falls, strange having rings starting half way down the glass but she looks good

S fruity at first then the dark roast kicks in, licorice, coconut, chocolate syrup, and just a little coffee

T lots of dark chocolate, more coffee and its roasted dark, not as much dark fruit in the mouth, some charred wood, very rich and flavorful

M silky, full bodied but no knife and fork required, low carbonation, a little sticky on the lips, chocolate and char linger

O well rounded and tasty, hits all the spots and pretty easy to drink for nearly 9%, the booze is very well hidden

Perhaps not well suited for this hot Summer's day so perhaps I'll save my other 3 bottles for a chilly evening, well priced for the quality I'll be buying this one again.

Pours a black brew with a medium beige head with regular retention, aroma is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with caramel, vanilla, chocolate, alcohol and coffee, medium to robust bodied, flavor is moderate to heavy sweet and moderate bitter with a bittersweet finish, and quite tasty. Fine body with a long and smooth aftertaste of light barley and coffee. So very nice.

Was curious so I tried this. Here goes:

A: Excellent. Pours a thick, creamy head with lots of lacing. Definitely more than one inch. Beer is opaque and lets no light through.

S: OK, but nothing special. Lots of dark fruit and the burnt malt makes its presence known. Kind of generic, really. No hops are detectable.

T: The burnt malt gives off the taste of a lot of dark fruit. Can taste plum, raisins, figs, etc. The dark fruit is really overwhelming in this beer. Also of note, there is a huge boozy presence in the background that coats the palate. The alcohol kind of overshadows the flavor profile of this beer, but the malt profile is good nonetheless.

M: Very rich and creamy. Glides down the throat.

O: A good beer. However, I've tasted stouts similar to it and was therefore bored with the flavor. Still good, however.
