I'm thankful for this beer that I drink as I review this fine Thanksgiving morning. Pours black with the faintest brown highlights at the glass' edge. Big foamy, patchy head, receding slowly and leaving stripes of lacing. Smells nice, strong roasted malts, chocolate aromas, and a touch hoppiness and faint booze.

Very big flavor here. Roasted malts and chocolate intermingling to present a nice bitterness backed up by an earthy, leafy hop bitterness. The beer has got a touch of sweetness but is probably drier than it is sweet. Full and robust, with a light carbonation. Super stout.

A: Very black! Can't see a thing. Poured on the side so almost no head.

S: Not much here except some cracker and oat. Maybe some bitterness.

T: This is pleasant but not super complex as I'd hoped. Malt, toast, oat flakes, char, and tobacco. Got some pretty good flavors. Some of the booze comes through though.

M: Fairly thick but there's a lightness to it, so it's right in the middle. This is a very well-done piece of the beer.

O: Not bad. I may just not be in a stout mood tonight so I'll be as objective as I can be. This beer is pretty awesome. Not the most complex beer you'll ever have, but it is well made for the style. The only thing I didn't like was the booziness, but it wasn't overpowering.

Poured from bottle into KBS snifter. Aggressive pour. Appearance is a beautiful jet black. Upon pouring, a foamy cappuccino-like foam is formed atop the glass. The foam eventually recedes into a thin, almost transparent layer covering the entirety of the surface and ultimately settling into a ring around the glass which accompanies you as you finish the beer.

The nose at first instance is that of chocolate milk. Coffee aroma closely follows and there are traces of dark fruit and molasses. Its taste has a sweet start with notes of chocolate and very faint vanilla. The finish is bitter, pleasantly so – a bitter finish you would expect from espresso.

Its mouthfeel is thick and chewy, quite appropriate to fully appreciate the spectrum of flavors in this beer.

Overall, a quite solid Imperial Stout – I would definitely seek again and enjoy it on a regular basis.

You ever read about that one study where they put plain seltzer in two cans? One can was yellow, the other was white. They asked people to drink from both cans and write down what flavors they picked up. People said the white-canned seltzer tasted like regular seltzer, but they swore the yellow-canned seltzer had nodes of lemon.

That's just how our brains work. Our senses do not operate independent of one another. Sounds prime us to see certain sights, certain sights lead us to expect certain flavors. Just--think about if you took a sip of a beer that poured like Schlitz but tasted like Guinness. You'd be repulsed, because that's just not right.

And so when I see the Green Flash logo, I'm thinking "this beer is gonna taste great up front but then drop off near the end," since that's what their beers tend to do. And because I'm expecting that to happen, I'm usually way too critical of the back end, like I'm waiting for a flaw to manifest.

And, of course, that's what happened here. Big double coffee and charred barley up front, then things appeared to fizzle. Although I don't know if they actually fizzled that badly or if they just appeared to since that's what I was expecting them to do.
