Style: American Double / Imperial Stout

Alcohol by volume (ABV): 8.80%

Availability: Rotating

Notes / Commercial Description:
We explored 19th Century British Stout recipes, then charted a fresh course to land on a modern American version of the old-world classic. Our Double Stout encompasses the very best of both worlds. Golden naked oats, dark crystal and roasted malt offer a luscious balance of bittersweet chocolate and hints of coffee. Fair winds and following seas. Smooth sailing, all the way home.

Definitely bittersweet chocolate, lighter on the coffee, dark brown head, little lacing, but is definitely an Imperial. Try it. Imperial lovers will definitely be satisfied.

12 oz bottle. Best by 2016-05-08.

A: Opaque black. Poured 3 fingers high of head, medium short retention.
S: Chocolate. Somewhat coconut. A little vanilla and woody.
T: Intense chocolate, like cocoa milk. Medium low sweetness. Medium high bitterness. A little herbal. Dry finish.
M: Full bodied. Quite creamy.
O: Great stout! The creamy mouthfeel, the sweetness, and the strong chocolate flavor make it drinks like cocoa milk. Yet the relative high bitterness balances it really nice. Finally the alcohol content is not too high, given that there are many alcohol monsters in the style.

Poured opaque black with a thick tan head. Nice lacing. Aromas of coffee and roasted malt. The taste was well-balanced, with toast, coffee, chocolate, and a nice firm bitterness. Full-bodied with a great feel.

Very thick mouth feel, and with a strong lingering dark chocolate flavor that remains throughout the stout. I get some coffee, and really no bitterness.

look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.5 | feel: 5 | overall: 4.5

Pours thick black with thin tan head. Decent retention and thin lacing.

Smell is strong of chocolate and malts. Not picking up the coffee, but some breadiness.

Taste of dark chocolate, coffee shows up for sure in the taste. Moderate bitterness tries to add balance, but this one is leaving toward sweet, and I like it.

Feel is very thick with lively carbonation. Turns foamy and sticky. A lot of character in the feel.

Overall, this is exceptional. A very well rounded flavor profile with a nice nose and excellent feel. Nothing here is in your face with added flavors, almost perfect.

Poured at 47°F from a 12oz bottle (best by 03Sep16) into a nonic pint glass. Allowed to warm up to 50°F before drinking. Consumed on 09Feb16.
LOOK: Pours with a fingers worth of brown foam that dissipates into a quarter fingers worth of khaki foam within 1 minute and 15 seconds. Black in color with an orange tint. There is a subtle amount of small rising bubbles. Lacing is subtle in quantity and thin.
SMELL: Mild aromas of bittersweet chocolate, coffee, and bitter roasted malts are backed by subtle black cherry, plum, and vanilla aromas along with hints of alcohol.
TASTE: Strong coffee and mild bitter roasted malt flavors first strike the palate and are immediately followed by strong bittersweet chocolate flavors along with mild plum and sweet, black cherry flavors. Subtle flavors of vanilla, floral hops, and spicy hops enter lastly as all previous flavors persist, except for bitter roasted malts, which grow stronger.
FEEL: Full-bodied and subtly carbonated. Goes down smooth and creamy. Finishes with a strong dryness. A big and welcoming alcoholic warmth can be felt as it goes down the throat.
NOTE: Too bitter for me to personally rate any higher. I can definitely see how other people love this, though. If you're looking for a stout balancing sweetness and bitterness, look elsewhere. If you love the bitter, you'll love this beer.

Cold, poured from a bottle into a snifter.

Look: Dark brown, pretty much black with a tan head that clings around the edge.

Smell: A light nose of subtle coffee notes.

Taste: Heavily roasted coffee taste up front and a lingering bitterness.

Feel: Medium carbonation that dances on the tongue.

Overall: This will be a great beer if you like your coffee.

Very dark, long lasting head. Chocolate! Lots of chocolate, tastes like a candy bar, dunked in coffee & cream. Very tasty. I couldn't sense any kind of aroma but it's other qualities make up for it. Excellent

355ml bottle into a Tulip. Paid £4.65 for a single bottle.

Pours an opaque, black, oily body, that when held to the light reveals only a sliver of ruby against the edges of the glass. A three-finger in height, tan-coloured dense, creamy head dissipates slowly to a thin cap, leaving behind thick, solid bands of sticky lace.

The light and simple nose primarily consists of charred dark malts and roasted coffee beans, small amounts of pine and grassy hop profiles are also noticeable in the background. The taste follows suit. Dry, earthy, dark roasted malts dominate initially, with dry roasted coffee following shortly after. Faint suggestions of bitter chocolate, cocoa and vague dark fruits enter around the mid palate but fail to really impact the heavy roast profile. In the mouth, a medium body and enthusiastic carbonation give a feel that is smooth and creamy, but quite light on the palate. Towards the finish a touch of pine and grassy hops join lingering char, roast and coffee profiles to add more of a simple, abrasive, dry bitterness rather than interest or flavour.

Overall this is a decent beer. It does a good job of balancing an intense roast profile with high drinkability and hides its 8.8% ABV incredibly well. Ultimately though, it is a little one-dimensional. For me, it needs greater malt sweetness in order to balance that powerfully bitter roast. At this price point, I won’t be picking up another bottle for what is just a good but not great beer.

Jet black pour with no clarity under tan cap; decent retention and lacing. Roast malt and chocolate nose. Bittersweet dark chocolate flavor alongside roast malt; lite coffee finish. Moderate carbonation and medium plus mouthfeel. An excellent stout with roast malt and roast coffee linger.

Bought a 12oz bottle from Don Quiojte $3.29. Black Coffee color, chocolate smell, heavy mouthfeel, creamy dark roasted chocolate taste, alcohol aftertaste. This is a bold tasting beer meant to be sipped, but that aftertaste makes me rate it lower.

Black color with a creamy, decent brown head. Soft aromas of toffee, coffee and bread. Great flavors of burned malt, with an oily addition of coffee, which turns pleasantly bitter in the end. Earthy, breadish flavors give this beer a warming and recognizable character. Carbonation is unusal high, making this even fuller-bodied, by adding a refreshing, slightly metallic note to the beer. Coffee goes along with underlying hints of plums and raisins, giving the beer a bodacious ending. Mouthfeel is troughout silky, smooth, with a long ending, which adds a notable bitterness, absorbing the otherwise too present malt-sweetness. As the beer warms up, spicy hints of alcohol, still well included in the overall taste, become present. Misses a little more balance, but becomes more interessting, course of the high carbonation, which makes this a very refreshing, active stout.

Bought this at the Beer Shop in East Longmeadow, MA. Although I poured this is some bad glassware, I could see a very large, frothy head with this drink that dissipates slowly into some good retention and thick lacing on the side. Besides the head, the beverage has a jet-black appearance. Really engrossing aromas of cocoa, malt, vanilla, mocha coffee, and a buttery grain smell. Taste followed the nose with an additional earthy hop characteristic mixed with a syrupy dark chocolate drink. Great mouthfeel to supplement this drink too; very silky and creamy. Overall, this is an excellent dessert-like stout with a wonderful balance of aromas and flavors.

Good easy to get stout. Not super complex bit more of an American/hoppy stout but it's Green Flash. Super tasty slight chocolate n roast on the nose taste follows. taste and What complexity there is starts as it warms. Minimal head great lacing. Id recommend and will buy again.

Appearance: solid blackness, creamy tan head, about a quarter inch, long lasting. Quite attractive.

Aroma: Ah! Wonderful roasted dark malt, with all the requisite flavors spilling out. Chocolate and coffee, licorice, molasses, cola. Below that, vanilla and cream. Very nice.

Taste: Nice bite of roasty bitterness jumps on board the palate, sticks it out, stays a while. Full-bodied, with all those rich, dark flavors joining the mix. Rich and toasted, with a blend of cocoa, espresso, and more. They're calling this a Double Stout, instead of a Russian Imperial Stout, for reasons of their own, but it carries many of that style's hallmarks. It's at nearly 9% ABV, and I'm not feeling it yet, but I'm sure it won't take long.

ADJUSTMENT made on 11/18/2015: I really liked the taste and mouth-feel this time. Upping those ratings, and the overall.

ADJUSTMENT made on 10/21/2015: I am lowering the rating after having had it recently and not being as impressed as with the last one I had.

12OZ, Best By 10/1/2015 (I believe I bought this sometime in later winter of this year, so my guess is it has at least 6 months of age on it).

Pours inky black, with a thick, light caramel-colored head that lasts nearly a minute, with bubbles both large and small; nice lacing. Smells of chocolate, coffee, and perhaps some booze. Lots going on in the flavor: chocolate, coffee, and perhaps even port wine (?) with a dry finish (ADJUSTMENT made on 11/18/2015: licorice mid palete, with lots of molasses on the finish; in many ways, it felt like I was drinking bread; I loved it).

I really like this beer. I drank this once when I bought it, yet I don't remember it being this good; perhaps, I am simply paying more attention this time, but my guess is this beer has changed, and for the better. This is a great Imperial stout, especially for the price point of $8-9 a four pack. I plan to buy more to keep on hand, and I look forward to continuing to see how it ages (though at only 8.8% my guess is it won't benefit from age too much longer).

Finished a novel and sipped a stout...good evening. Bottle to pint glass. Pours a very dark, opaque brown with a latte-colored head. Smell is a bit of hops, roasted grains, coffee, and a bit of spice (cloves?). Taste is dried figs and molasses cookies, maybe some bitter chocolate. Not much alcohol in the flavor. Mouthfeel wasn't quite as rich and thick as I was expecting, but still solid. Overall, this is an excellent imperial stout.

12oz bottle, best by 09JAN16; I had this once a few years ago and loved it. I was hoping my tastes hadn't changed
A - creamy chocolaty light brown head holds good retention atop a black colored ale
S - Roasted barley, dark chocolate, dark roast coffee, earthy hops
T - really nice and balanced with dark baker's chocolate, roasted barley, dark roast coffee, earthy hops, and some oats come through as well
M - very creamy and smooth, full bodied, alcohol very well concealed
O - this is a very solid Imperial stout at a decent price in a 12oz format. I'll be buying this more often. I'm glad this was just as good as I remember!

Look - As black as 2am & as clear as politics today.
Lacing is about to happen, but not quite, just like the elected yahoos.

Smell - Chocolate. Black coffee notes and burnt figs. Made me feel at home.
“The house smelled musty and damp, and a little sweet, as if it were haunted by the ghosts of long-dead cookies.”
― Neil Gaiman, American Gods

Taste - Sweetness & the coffee is in your face during and after.

Feel - Oily with low carbonation.

Overall -4 for being a powerful double, however, this is not a stout for just anybody.

A friend gave me this & I owe him one good beer back now for sure...Quite a sippin stout that i will not forget!
Watchin' cubs & reds in the 4th, tied 1-1 & by the time the 7th inning stretch comes around,i'll probably still be sippin'.

My first Green Flash beer.

A : Pours a dark motor oil black with 100% opacity. The head is large and in charge standing at an amazing 2 fingers in my giant globe snifter glass and beige in color. It leaves its mark with lacing in rings around the glass.

S : Lots of burnt and chocolate malts, chocolate chip cookie, oatmeal, milk, very faint light roasted coffee, with a sting of road tar and alcohol. All of the smells in a stout are here, and they are well blended. Well executed.

T : Sting of hop and alcohol hit first, followed faintly by dark chocolate, burnt malts, and oatmeal. It finishes charred and with some burnt oats and rye. Somewhat backwards in its flavor procession, as generally the alcohol and hop come last. I think that's how it should be, but it's easily what sets this beer apart.

F : Very dry and charred throughout the whole feel, leaving an adhesive dryness clinging with pasty alcohol sting.

O : I would have liked more malts, oatmeal, and milk for a softer touch. This is a very hard-edged stout with powerful alcohol and hop flavors right off the bat, leading to a heavy feeling in the tummy. The complexity is not there, it's very linear and one noted. It's not bad, it's just not my style of stout.
