Green Flash Double Stout.

Well thus far these guys have hit 2 grand slams. But can they make it 3 in one night? Find out on the next episode of....Lolololol fuck that, I'm drinking it now.

Look - As black and the charcoal used to roast deceased cows with a two finger head that leaves rings around the glasses and cloud formations on the top after about two minutes of sitting. I mean really, can these guys ( or anybody for that matter) make a more attractive beer? I doubt it. Lacing is spotty. 4.75.

Smell - Chocolate raisins are the first thing to hit like a nuclear bomb of chocolate...and raisins going straight up your nostrils and penetrating the virginity of your senses. Black coffee notes and dark burnt meats followed by figs and burnt, near black metal satanic barley..but mostly raisins ;). 4.75.

Taste - Well smack me up and call me Susan even though I'm a guy, it tastes like chocolate covered raisins. That..and the coffee is there as well of course. Beer needs to warm a bit, so give me a minute to continue on with this. ALRIGHTY. The coffee is there. Likewise with the Satanic barley. But there is an odd sweetness that I wish would go away so I could 5 this category..unfortunately, it isn't gonna go away. 4.

Feel - Oily bodied with medium carbonation. Really nothing else to say in this department as it doesn't change and nothing new develops. 4.

Overall - The lable claims " Big, Bold and Complex ". And while I agree with that, the sweetness of this beer kills the taste category. Do NOT get me wrong here, it is a GREAT beer..but I like massive, boozy RIS's with a boozey sting and this simply did not do that. However, this is certainly not a stout for somebody just getting into the craft game ( See Guinness for that non-sense) . No really, I'm not as big a dick as I seem in my reviews so feel free to message me about stuff and what I would recommend and hell if you're within the area we could trade/share/get drunk any time. Anyway, very sweet stout. And very easy at the ABV. But, if they tuned down the sweetness, upped the booze, it would be world class easily. 4.25 (2,110 characters)

Great thick body and full classic stout flavor. Char and burnt toast with light plum notes and just a hint of roasted coffee beans. Very classic straightforward stout with a ton of flavor and body and a long finish. (215 characters)

12 oz. bottle into a pint glass. Served at nearly room temperature. Pitch black in color with very faint brown hues near the bottom edge. 1.5 fingers of soft, dense tan foam sits on top. Great classic stout aroma, including chocolate, sweet roasty malt, and coffee. Maybe some hints of cinammon in there, but very subtle. Surprisingly light weight for an imperial stout, but has a very rich and creamy mouthfeel. Not that it's LIGHT, but just not as dense and syrupy as I would have expected. Strong notes of roasted coffee beans and bitter chocolate up front, with the bitterness intensifying as it warms on the palate. Modest notes of alcohol on the back end with a moderately smooth finish. Coffee and choclate bitterness left behind on the aftertaste.

Overall, a very good imperial stout that's not going to put you on your ass immediately if you want to enjoy 2 in a sitting. This beer smelled and tasted great. Not overly complex, but still good. I do wish it had been a tad thicker in body, and a more polished finish would've been nice, but hey. Definitely worthy of it's BA rating. (1,091 characters)

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #90 (July 2014):

Lush, Malty, Roasty, Char

Pitch black with a big, coffee colored head. Nose is full of roast, char, and grain. Smooth, creamy, and lush, with a full-body and a sweet, malty, semi-syrupy, caramel base followed by dark fruits (raisins), roast, char, coffee, bittersweet chocolate, treacle, and marshmallow. Finishes dry with lingering char and smoke. No hype. No limited availability. No lines of beer geeks. No bullshit. Just a kickass Double Stout.

Poured into snifter. The color is virtually black with a beautiful thick brown head and generous lacing. This is a lovely looking stout. However, I was disappointed with the smell - malty but not much else. The taste features bitter, burnt coffee with some chocolate at the finish. I like some dark fruit in my stouts but didn't detect any. For a well-regarded stout, this one is surprisingly thin. Overall, I was disappointed. This stout looks great but it simply doesn't compare well with many others I like. (518 characters)

From a bottle into a snifter

Pour is pitch black with 1/2 finger of thin kaki head that fades quickly leaving light lace in the glass

Smell rich roasted malts with Carmel notes. No hop presence in the nose. Aroma is the strength of the beer for me

Taste follows well with chocolate and roasted Carmel malt. I get some generic nuttiness with the chocolate sweetness at well

Feel is weak for me. Flavors are faint and don't last on the palate. I like my stouts to be thick and this is not. Consistency reminds me more of a porter.
Overall a solid beer in the nose that leaves a bit to be had in the taste. (608 characters)

Appearance: Pitch black, minimal head retention, nice lacing.

Nose: Sweet vanilla, coffee, and a touch of licorice. A little bit of cola.

Taste: Malt, coffee, sherry, fig, and chocolate. The malt is well balanced throughout and makes for some great mouthfeel. Some bourbon.

Notes: This is a smooth drinking, fine stout. Imperial...? Perhaps not, but it is very very good. (389 characters)

Look: A deep mahogany brown that still manages to show some clarity through ginger highlights. The head is a strip of tan on top:

Smell:The vivacious, yet balanced fragrance comes at you from two sides of the spectrum: fresh, grassy hops and a pungent chocolate factory. It's a surprisingly near perfect pairing. There also exists a soft sweet combo of red and black fruit--strawberries and plums, for the most part.

Taste: Gourmet chocolate comes with a white pepper kick. The fruit is there too, plums in particular. The malt bill has a strong, grainy presence. It starts out toasty and complex, then ends up slightly smoky in the finish, like roasted chestnuts. Also balancing out the sweetness are the noticeable hops, which are earthy, with medium bitterness. The result is neither too sweet, not too bitter. It's everything you've been looking for in a stout, living together in harmony.

Mouthfeel: The smooth mouthfeel has some creaminess to it, but the stays within average viscosity. Strong carbonation adds a refreshing quality, making this big beer deceivingly drinkable. Indeed, the alcohol warming is barely noticeable, quietly loitering in the back of the throat.

Overall: The Imperial Stout I've been waiting for! It has all the "right" qualities, but steers completely clear from the dark-and-sticky territory. Hops, spice, and bubbles are what drive it above and beyond the norm. And yet, it still has the dark chocolate strawberries everyday Imperial Stout lovers are hoping for. (1,507 characters)

look: 4.5 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4 | feel: 4 | overall: 4

Appearance: Black as can be with a huge 2-3 finger brown head. Looks the part

Smell: Heavily roasted malts, dark chocolate, and a slight smoke presence

Taste: That dark roasted malt and chocolate upfront and then a nice smokey presence mid palate that follows through the finish. Possibly the slightest hint of dark fruits mid palate as well, but fades fast

Mouthfeel: i think this is where this beer could be improved. Its medium bodied, but theres a lot of bitterness that destracts from the flavors a bit

Overall: Solid, straightforward imperial stout. Iv had many that are better, but this is still somewhat unique. Its heavily roasted, and the smokey character is probably what i enjoy most about this beer. If the mouthfeel was less bitter and more smooth and creamy, this would get a higher rating from me. I plan on cellaring a couple and suspect that the bitterness will subside and that the flavors come together more (932 characters)

Look: Dark dark black. No light gets through. Thick, dark brown, fluffy head is retained nicely.

Smell: Roasty and caramel. little boozy too.

Taste: Deep thick Roasty malt. Not overly hot. Alcohol is masked fairly well. A little caramel and chocolate on the back end. Maybe a hint of coffee in the follow through.

Feel: Pretty big and creamy. Needs just a skoshe more boddy and It'd be perfect.

Overall: Really great Double Stout. Big, Bold, & Complex just like the bottle says. Dangerously easy drinking for an 8.8% beer. (526 characters)

Pours a dark black with a thin quickly dissipating beige head. Smell is of chocolate, roasted malt, vanilla, and caramel. Taste is of roasted malt, chocolate, a bit of a crisp dry end to it, very fruity with a cherry flavor. Nice full mouth feel and a good amount of carbonation. (279 characters)

Thoroughly enjoyed from a growler from Jungle Jim's. This fine stout pours thick black with a thick luxurious tan head of tight beaded foam that dissipates to a thin layer of foam, a thick ring, and epic lacing. Nose od dark bakers chocolate, moderate cream, moderate alcohol, deeply roasted grains and malts, and dark fruits. Flavors up front are roasted grains and malts, deep chocolate notes to the rear with a light hint of coffee, creamy dark fruit notes come through on the aftertaste with alcohol warmth and moderate hop balance. Smooth slick mouth feel, medium carbonation that is lightly crisp, and a bitter hop/malt character rounding it all out. Most excellent. Never had this on tap before, love the bottle, and worth noting is that it is a bit smooth. That said, this is a fantastic stout regardless of it's decanter.

Cheers! (846 characters)

12 ounce bottle poured into an oversized snifter.

Massive chewy, burly dark-khaki head. Extensive lacing as the head recedes, forming rings and streaks about the glass. Pitch-black body as would be expected. 5

Strong aroma of dark chocolate and roasted malts. Faded floral hop aroma and a bit of pungent sweetness combined with hints of booze. 4

Pretty potent hop flavor and bitterness with a matching of bitter dark chocolate followed by sweet creamy malts and vanilla. 4

It's got quite the bitter element too it, which ain't much of a surprise coming from Green Flash. But there's plenty of rich creaminess and a viscous mouthfeel that drinks very easily. 4.25

Warmth did wonders for this beer and I enjoyed it more and more. An excellent choice when in need of something easily attainable. (798 characters)

Look: Black with big dark brown head, good retention and lacing
Smell: Dark roasty malt aromas with some alcoholic dark fruit
Taste: Reminded me most of the Old Rasputin - very classic Imperial Stout flavors with great balance. Slightly sweet, roasty, with noticeable but pleasant hops character. Delicious.
Feel: Thick, smooth yet nicely carbonated

Overall: For me this is a pretty ideal imperial (double) stout. It looks great with a nice sticky tan head that stays the duration, and the flavors and aromas are varied yet balanced. It has that thick creaminess in the mouth that you expect of a heavy stout. And it's not so strong that the alcohol overpowers the rest of the palate. No gimmicks, either - just a great all around stout! (742 characters)

Pours pitch black with a thick tan head. Sweet aroma, slight toffee notes. Wonderful taste of slightly sweet coffee, very roasty; finishes with a balanced degree of bitterness. Mouthfeel is unexpectedly thick, a bit grainy, but it's incredibly drinkable for 8+% abv. Fantastic beer, definitely on the sweeter side though. (321 characters)

This beer wasn't that great overall. A bit thin for the style and a pungent smell of alcohol. As it warmed, the alcohol mellowed and the malt flavors became more pronounced. However, you can do much better in this style category. (232 characters)

Look. Dark, dark mahogany, with a medium brown, medium sized head, my favorite look.
Smell. Charred wood with bit of french roast coffee.
Taste. Fairly balanced, starts with a malty richness with a bit of sweetness then finishes with a somewhat more pronounced hoppy bitterness. Pretty good.
Mouth feel. Nice heavy body, chewy, spongey, oily then a dry, upper back palette-smacking finish.
Overall. My favorite is still a sweeter, maltier beer, but this is very good for a more balanced stout. (497 characters)
