Poured into a snifter

A: Blackish/brown with a tan half finger head that fizzles to tiny bubbles. Bulky lacing.

S: Coffee, chocolate, licorice.

T: Follows nose. Very smooth and sweet. Bold. Even better as it warms.

M: Medium to heavy. Frothy carbonation.

O: One of the better stouts I've tried. Another winner from Green Flash.

12oz. bottle from Total Wine & More poured into 18.2oz. Samuel Smith's Pint Glass

A: This may be the sexiest beer I've ever poured. It's black as hell in the center with hints of deep soil brown around the edges. The head is a solid three inches of mousse colored thickness and is dissipating extremely slowly. Upon pour, I got that sexy, lavish drop similar to Guinness; you know, where it looks like sand churning in a shallow pool.

S: Coffee and cappuccino. No thinness, no alcohol, no chocolate or screwing around. This is malted cappuccino. Such a great aroma.

T: Imagine if steak tasted like an average stout, but the steak was charred. It's slightly grainy, but that char is awesome. Cappuccino on steroids. Hints of finely shaven dark bakers chocolate. Not sweet, but bitter. The beer isn't bitter, just the chocolate is.

M: Ugh! It's smooth as hell, slightly thinning, and a little oily. A nice, full hop tingle, but not too much. Not even enough to register until the dryness takes over my mouth post-sip, bringing me back for more. Really frothy. Not as thick as I assumed, but it's perfect. P-E-R-F-E-C-T.

OVERALL: Green Flash Double Stout is a sexy, classy, rough and tumble broad. Everything about it is about average and the textbook style areas are a hit. I suggest all of you bourbon stout lovers take a step back and see what a non-barrell aged stout is supposed to be like just as a refreshing reminder. This is the best non-bourbon/brandy stout I've had to date and the most stylistically perfect. Green Flash has always been a hell of a brewery, so it shouldn't come as much of a surprise.

NOTE: Live review.
(EDIT:) Still massive amounts of lacing with only about eight ounces left. It's all there on this one.

Pours a solid jet black color and builds a tall khaki head leaving lots of lacing. An impressive start just by the looks of it.

Nearly wet my nose at first while digging for any semblance of an aroma, but once it opened up got some nice notes of milk chocolate-covered cherries, medium roast coffee and pumpernickel.

Taste doesn't quite live up to the nose or appearance. It's got the standard stout notes of coffee and chocolate, but it finishes with a overly earthy and acidic bite. A little too much roast and hop bitterness with not quite enough malt sweetness for my liking.

Mouthfeel is disappointing as well...too thin and too much carbonation for a double stout. Could be a lot smoother.

A bit too acrid and rough around the edges for my taste, but if you like the sound of a hop-bombed coffee stout, give this one a shot.

Consumed 11/23/12

Appearance: Pours nearly pitch black, with a large, dense light brown head - keeps a very impressive cap, and coats the glass with lacing

Smell: Roasty grains, chocolate, and coffee - lightly burnt, secondary to the massive amount of roast - chocolate malts, baker's chocolate, dark chocolate - coffee with some sugar - toffee to round things out - hints of grassy and fruity hops

Taste: Nicely balanced and tasty - very roasted - roasted grains, roasted coffee, roasted chocolate bars, and some burnt tones - dark chocolate, baker's chocolate, and some chocolate cake - burnt sugar and toffee - some hints of dark fruits, and some hints of citrus - sweet, but also dry, nice level of roasty bitterness

Mouthfeel: Bordering on full, great carbonation, very smooth, roasty finish

Overall: Double Good

I think this is my first non-IPA from Green Flash that I have reviewed. And it kicks ass. It's not particularly earth-shattering, but it's better than some more expensive, harder-to-get alternatives. Beyond a solid choice, definitely worth a try.

Thick brown head. Sticks around just long enough.

Totally opaque brown.

Extremely balanced, with relatively subtle chocolate and coffee. Sort of "essence of chocolate ice cream." Not much bitterness. Boozy finish.

Smooth and goes down real easy. Not too thick and heavy, not too sticky, not too burnt tasting.
