Poured from a 22 ounce bottle into a St. Bernardus goblet.

A: Two fingers of tight, creamy mocha head. The beer is dark brown, mahoganyish, but totally opaque.

S: Mmm, milk chocolate and roasted malt. Smells like a creamy robust stout. Unfortunately, at time, a dryness veers towards metallic.

T/M: Damn solid stout. No complaints. That said, pretty typical. The body is dark and malty, with a noticeable dash of hops to keep things fresh. Some fruity elements are appreciated, but outshone by chocolate. Viscous and smooth, with an excellent, lingering, roasted-bitter finish. Full-bodied and enjoyable.

O: An exemplar of the style and a classic beer. Recommended. Would have again, if a bit plain.

EDIT: Almost a year has done wonders. Huge vanillins dominate the nose (and are big in the flavor) and the hops are juicy, fruity, and delicious. Highly recommended. Would bump nose to 4.5, as well as taste.

Very decent imperial stout. Not normally what I would consider a summertime beer, this really does it for me. A near ideal night cap.

STYLE: Double/Imperial Stout

ABV: 8.8%

LOOK: Like dessert. Car tire black with a thin darkish head. Not bubbly, not fluffy, but there. What I want from this style is something that resembles whole milk. This is richer than 2% but not quite to that standard.

NOSE: Playful. Sweet chocolate milk, peanut M&Ms, raspberries, cherries, stir of licorice. It’s the light floral scent that rounds it out for me.

MOUTH: Very clean on the front, brownie batter and vanilla and dissolved rib collagen roam purposefully through the mouth. What’s notable is a whisper of lemon-orange citrus and undefined but pleasant floral notes. It finishes crisply on the back end but lingers in the cheeks, putting the mouthfeel in rare company.

Pours motor oil black color with zero light penetration and a creamy 1 finger tan head that faded slowly and left a creamy layer on top and moderate spotty lacing on the sides with rings as it went down.

Smells of roasted malt, chocolate, toasted grains, burnt coffee, charred wood, floral hops and a hint of herbs; very rich roasted aroma that had a sweet chocolate twist to make it inviting.

The flavor is like the nose on steroids, complex with strong roasted malt, chocolate, toasted grains, burnt coffee, charred wood, molasses, caramel, brown sugar and vanilla up front, followed by lemon zest, citrus hops, cocoa powder, herbs or tea leaf, more burnt coffee and a hint of dark fruit or booze like rum or bourbon. This is a sweet malt bomb that has enough hops to bring out the chocolate sweetness and hide the ABV very well, allowing just hints of booze to linger after each sip.

Mouthfeel is creamy and very smooth, with mild carbonation that’s on the thin side, a medium body and slightly bitter finish that leaves a nice smoky aftertaste and a touch of booze. Very nice imperial stout that was easy to drink and got better as it warmed up.

Bottled on 5/22/2012.

Poured into a pint glass. Pours black like motor oil with a tall, tan head. the head retains very well, dissipating very slowly. Plenty of sticky lacing is left behind on the glass. There are aromas of dark roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee. It has the typical imperial stout smell that really opens up as it warms. The alcohol can also be picked up in the smell. The dark roasted malts, chocolate, and coffee flavors blend very well together in the mouth. The roasted malts leave a light aftertaste. There are also some hops in the back end, which balance some of those big flavors. The alcohol is well-hidden, but becomes more apparent as it warms up. The flavors become bolder as the beer warms. The body is medium to full with some carbonation. The finish is dry. The beer is creamy, though a bit on the thinner side of creamy. This helps the drinkability, but this is still a sipper. This is an excellent beer. While it's not quite as good as Old Rasputin, this is still a solid imperial stout.

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a duvel glass

A: pours black with a two dj get chocolaty head that recedes slowly to a film and leavs a ton of sticky lacing, this looks delicious

S: delicious and roasty, chocolaty, reminds me of chocolate pudding, hint of alcohol.

T: deffinatly toasty, and chocolaty, deffinatly some hints of cherry in there as well, a little bit of smoke, again I am reminded of chocolate pudding. All these flavors and complexities seem to
Clash a bit, and there is a bit of a metallic astringency.

M: medium bodied, deffinatly on the light side for the style with high medium carbonation, I wish that the carbonation was a bit lower here, although the brew is very drinkable, but I like a bit more heft from my impy stouts.

O: no my favorite stout, although it is deffinatly not a bad beer, of you look at the ratin this brew has after 500 reviews, i guess it's just not for me. It looks beautiful and smells beautiful bit the taste and mouthfeel were a bit off for me.
