Pours midnight black with light penetrating only the thinnest of edges. Head is mocha in color and near 2 fingers thick. Retention is above average, with a resulting lace that's thin but sticky.

Smell - Smells of subtle dark roast, chocolate, and a bit of heat shines through.

Taste - Starts with a touch of roasted malt, chocolate mocha and cream, then a huge citrus hop bitterness swoops in and takes control. Finishes strong with a lingering, sharply bitter citrus aftertaste.

Mouthfeel - Medium to full body. For a near 9%, this goes down smooth and easy. Creamy. Carbonation lends to some crispness, along with tingly lips.

Overall - I gotta be honest, for a double stout, I was expecting deeper, more darkly roasted malt, but this kicks like your regular oatmeal with a significant boost in the amount of hops. It's good, but not the 'kick in your pants' abyss deepness I was thinking it'd be. Does well to contain the high alcohol content.

Poured a deep black hue with a one finger frothybtan head. There was good retention and lacing.

The smell featured roasted malts and smooth chocolate.

The taste consisted of chocolate malts, dry coffee and a touch of lactose.

The mouthfeel was full with a semi dry finish.

Overall a full flavored user friendly double stout.

On tap at World of Beer in Raleigh; served in a snifter

A - pitch black with a thick cap of brown head that has decent retention

S - faintly roasty, faint coffee, a bit creamy

T - chocolate, coffee, roasty, faint bitterness in the finish

M - smooth, rich, well carbonated, medium bodied

There is nothing of great note here. It was an amped up version of a very traditional stout. All the flavors were there and it was highly drinkable. It's worth a try.

12oz bottle. Bottle not dated but purchased winter 2012
Central Waters globe

A: Pours a pretty much pitch black "stout" color. Initially I got a finger and a half of tight bubbled light tan head. Looks to be leaving some nice sticky lacing sheets. Head sticks around.

S: In a night of IPAs and others, this is a breath of fresh air. Nice roast notes. I get some nice coffee hints and mild and dark chocolate hits. Doesn't smells aggressive like a RIS.

T: Right up front on the tongue, I get bitterness from the chocolate for sure.In the mid palate, I am getting some roast coffee and chocolate malt. It's a really smooth beer. The ABV is nicely hidden for sure. So smooth. The finish is long and really pleasant.

M: It's full as per the style.

O: Enjoyed greatly.

A-pour is almost black with two fingers worth of tan head

S-rich roasted malt, molasses, dark chocolate, espresso, and a mild amount of hops

T-very rich malt with a large roasted flavor, molasses, black coffee, bitter hops are more powerful in the taste than the smell, and a light amount of dark chocolate

M-full body, medium to high carbonation, dry and roasted mouthfeel

Overall a very good beer for the style, would definitely get again.
