Appearance: gorgeous black beauty. Thick messy mocha head and lacing. Looks like a stout ought to.
Smell: simple and very good. Roast and coffee and straightforward a stout as I've ever had.
Taste: exactly as expected from the nose. Simple and damn good.
Overall: outside of the monsters this is a good a stout as I've had.

A - Pours with one finger of brown foam on top of an opaque, black body. The head settles slowly and leaves nice lace on the glass.

S - Dark chocolate, smoky coffee, caramel, and licorice.

T - Lots of dark sugar, caramel, brown sugar, and licorice up front. Some green hop flavors of pine in the middle with more brown sugar and chocolate. Finishes with coffee, smoke, licorice, and dark chocolate.

M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - Pretty nice, there is a lot of dark sugar and roast with a good balance between sweet, sugary notes and bitter grain. The finish is just dry enough to keep it balanced and drinkable while the licorice and coffee work nicely to keep it interesting.

Poured into a tulip.

A: Black as black can get. Two finger creamy brown head, lots of lacing and retains very well.

S: Big chocolate and creamy sweet oats, light toffee/ a bit of a carmamel nutty component , some light coffee.

T: Big roasted malt flavor, lots of burnt cocoa, bittersweet chocolate, finishes with a smoky, oaty, coffee aftertaste. Absolutely no alcohol detected.

M: Medium bordering heavy. Very, very creamy. Best part about the beer.

O: Solid impy stout, creamy and soft, heavy on the sweet oats and cocoa, and a good dose of smoke.

22oz Bottle into an tulip

Pours dark brown to translucent black with a thick 2 finger khaki head that leaves nice lacing on the glass

Not too strong on the nose, hints of roasted malt and a little bit of booze. A little chocolate and dark fruits as well.

Very nice taste, roasty malts, dark fruits, almost a bit of vanilla as well. Very nicely balanced and not overly sweet which many Impys can be.

Pleasant mouthfeel, a little light/thin for an imperial stout, but really nicely carbonated and smooth.

Overall a great stout for the price, a little light for an imperial, but tastes great. I am very pleased with this one and will certainly be grabbing this again.

Serving type: 12-ounce bottle. The nearly smeared “BOTTLED ON” date printed on the bottom of the bottle is “07/02/12.”

Appearance: It poured almost like syrup. The color is opaque black; no light passed through when I held it to a lamp. Two fingers of dark tan head dissipated very slowly and unevenly to leave a rocky lacing.

Smell: Deep, dark, roasted, and basically straightforward. Roasted malts, dark chocolate, a hint of espresso.

Taste: Each sip is tinged with a boozy sting (somewhat reminiscent of fruit-flavored vodka) and the flavors are much more muted. The roasted quality from the smell is not as noticeable (the bitterness lingers after each sip, though) and neither is the dark chocolate. Overall, the flavor is basically a pale version of the aroma.

Drinkability: Meh. It smells awesome but I was expecting a little more in terms of flavor. It is pretty bold, though.

12oz into a dfh glass

a black as the night. small foamy light brown head. some decent lacing, little head retention.

s very malty, fresh milled grains, bitter chocolate, light coffee, toffee, light caramel.

t very light brginning. a dry malt middle with a bitter and dry doffee and malt ending. there are notes of caramel, raw cocoa and bits of bitter chocolate.

m smooth and creamy. light fluffy carbonation.

o pretty good. an inexpensive, easy to find stout i would drink again. the thing that most impresses me is that a 9% has no booze flavor or scent at all. excellent.
