Double Stout is a great beer that I've had multiple times. First time reviewing it.

A - 4.25 -beer is a very dark brown/black color with a dark tan head that dissipates pretty quickly.

S - 4.5 - HUGE roasted coffee/espresso smell. It smells like a coffee shop. Definitely some vanilla and chocolate in there too.

T - 4.5 - Same roasted coffee flavor comes through in the taste. Has a nice hop balance to it too. Chocolate, vanilla, creaminess are in the background.

M - 4.5 - Good carbonation, leaves a nice roasted dark malt flavor in the aftertaste. Alcohol completely hidden.

O - 4.5 - Great beer that has a very nice double stout flavor to it. Complexity is there but it still has a drinkability that sets it apart. I could easily drink a 4 pack of this while golfing on an Arizona summer afternoon, and that says a lot considering it's a double stout.

Comparison to 2011-2012 version (orange label - date????)

Picked up a bottle of double stout with an orange label priced 5.29 @ a local bottle shop. Not complete sure how old this is but thinking 2-3 years.

A - 4.25 - Dark brown/black beer with a nice billowy tan head on it.
S - 4.5 - Huge coffee/espresso/roasted malt smell. Chocolate/dark chocolate in there too. Creamy/whole milk/vanilla in the background.
T - 4.75 - This beer is obviously smoothed out compared to the 2013 bottles I've been drinking. Huge chocolate/espresso/coffee notes, with roasted grains in the background. It's all balanced by this creaminess that lingers the entire time.
M - 4.75 - Heavy/thick mouthfeel. Alc completely covered. Aftertaste is chocolate/coffee/mocha latte/vanilla.
O - 4.75 - This beer better aged. I'm not sure if this is 3 or 4 years old? Either way, it's way smoothed out from before.

Bottle Appearance: Pitch black with lacing big khaki head Aroma: Coffee, semi-sweet chocolate Taste: Semi-sweet chocolate, some subtle fruit Palate: Slight earthy bitterness, dry, slightly bitter yet smooth finish Overall: I think this smooths with age since I remember it being more bitter (or could be my palate). Very good.

Poured from 12 oz bottle into a snifter.

A: Black. Tiny pockets of effervescence cling to the sides of the glass. Pours a 2 finger, tight, frothy, brown head. Settles very slowly, craters unevenly. Cascading lacing, settles to a thick beer ring.

S: Light roasted coffee, light dark chocolate, very oaky.

T: Peat is prominent, roasted coffee bean, licorice, a little pecan or walnut.

M: Kind of soapy palate. Hearty and thick. Bitter aftertaste, dry finish.

D: Sip and enjoy.

Atmosphere is really good. Nice effervescence, large thick head, plenty of persistent lacing. Nose is light components of coffee and chocolate with a strong oak character. Strong peaty flavor with roasted coffee, licorice and pecan. Overall, this is a really good quaff.
