Pours a beautiful thick oily black. Half finger of thin bubbly brown foam settles down into an almost iridescent dark mosaic.

A little bit of a let down. It looked like it was going to be tar thick and juicy, but the aroma is a little understated. What is there is appealing, though. Primarily the coffee and some rich chocolate. The promise is there, but...

Well, that's a little more like it. As I drink, some of that thick velvet that I was promised by the pour returns. Not as thick as I'd expected (hoped), but certainly a sight better than what the aroma offered. The carbonation features fine, piercing bubbles, because that makes sense and doesn't sound pretentious as shit. But seriously. Fine and piercing. The flavour is THIS CLOSE to being amazing. As it is, it's still pretty tasty, what with the rich rolly poly coffee beans, a touch of bakers chocolate, and a definitive sweetness about it that... about that sweetness. There's something about it. Is it the wrong shade? Perhaps a touch. Is it missing a transitional element? Maybe. I think if it were a bit thicker and creamier, or a bit less of whatever that sweet is it might meld just right. As it is it feels like it strays a little bit trying to have the best of both worlds, but needing to meet somewhere a little more in the middle.
A good beer no doubt, but feels like it could have been even better. I kind of feel like that speaks to most Green Flash I've had. Hits the spot, though, that's for sure.

12 oz bottle poured into tulip glass.

A - Pours a dark brown, almost black, with two and a half fingers of creamy chocolate/mocha head.

S - Roasted coffee, sweet chocolate, and roasted malt

T - The roastiness is very apparent in this. Good bit of roasted coffee and bitterness that is offset by the sweet chocolate. Nothing is overpowering, but very well balanced

M - Moderate-to-thick body with low-to-moderate carbonation. I would have liked a thicker, heavier mouthfeel, but it was still good.

O - A very solid stout. The roasted coffee and sweet chocolate complement each other great, and although there is nothing unique or outstanding about this beer, every aspect is well executed and balanced.

Double Stout Black Ale from Green Flash Brewery in San Diego, CA. Nice 8.8% ABV. Pour dark black with a foamy thick brown head. A very smooth mouth feel with a roasted malt/chocolate start and a mildly bitter coffee finish. I very balance Imperial Stout that hides the 8.8% ABV well. Well worth a try if you enjoy stouts or porters.
