Growler from Northbridge Pig $4.99 blowout sale. Poured into a Dogfish Head IPA glass...

A: Deep, golden orange; thick and creamy, two-finger head of off white foam leaves a good bit of webby lace.

S: Citrus rind; light malt / bread crust; dry aroma.

T: Grapefruit rind; chalky, bitter finish; spicy hops; minimal malt sweetness.

M: Full side of medium; high carbonation; tongue-numbing bitterness.

O: Pretty standard American IPA; bitterness is more dull / muted than bright / fresh - that's the only real knock I have on this beer.

Clear amber color with a white head and some retention. Very dank and resinous aromas, pineapple and grapefruit rind. Same things in the taste; it has some very tropical tastes to it. Medium to light body with a dry finish, medium carbonation. Thanks to Cole for the sample. I hope the regular release Green Flash IPA's are as amazing as this.

Tap @ O'Brien's. Pours orange-gold with a short white head. Strong in the pine and citrus aromas, with a lot of grapefruit. Sweet up front with caramel that gives the grapefruit, oranges, mango flavors a sugary coating. Good, resiny finish. Loved it.

Growler

Thanks for opening this with me, Josh!

A decently bitter and mildly citrus-forward IPA. A melange of hops used as opposed to a single hop. Very drinkable, especially on a hot day. I think this probably was quite the impressive IPA in 2008, when it was first brewed, but it doesn't necessarily stand up favorably against San Diego's Alpine or Societe.

2013 reincarnation of Green Flash Surfs Up served on tap at the Secret Stash Bash.

Poured clear, light amber in color, and with a medium and fairly durable head.
Had an attractive and complex hoppy aroma. Medium/high bitterness (IBU = 75) in this hoppy, West Coast style IPA that has limited amount of sweet malts. The hop mix included piney, herbal, citrus and grassy/weedy elements.

Medium body with slightly high carbonation.

O: a rather aggressive hop-lovers IPA.

Rebrewed and on tap at the Belmont Station.

A clear golden orange with a dense, off-white head with good retention and lacing, this looks nice. For a west coast ipa, the nose is surprisingly muted. Moderate hop aroma, with a blend of resin, grapefruit and citrus is present. No malt character is noticeable. The palate opens crisp and clean with a pure hop oil character, dank, resiny, piney and a little grapefruity. No real malt character, and with moderate bitterness, this beer is quite light on the palate. Alcohol is mildly noticeable, and way higher than it needs to be. Carbonation is a little high, but the clean palate with an absence of grassy hop character is nice. Medium light in body, this beer is pleasant enough, but i've lost track of how many better ipas i've had.

Thanks to Psprings for giving me the opportunity to try this one. Poured into a tulip from the nicely labeled 12 oz. bottle. Poured a hazy orange with a thin white head. Not much on the aroma- some caramel, malty. Taste is of some piney hops, but tremendously bitter aftertaste. Some hints of alcohol as well. Not very drinkable or balanced.
Been waiting a bit to try this one, but obviously should not have. It has been in the fridge since I got it, but this one must have been better really fresh. One of my favorite breweries, but this one was a miss for me.

11/08/2010

On tap at Stone's Chuckapalooza during San Diego Beer Week 2010. This was rebrewed as Green Flash 8th Anniversary Symposium IPA.

A: Pours transparent dark orange with a large frothy beige head that exhibits great retention.

S: Onion, garlic, pine, grapefruit, a touch of sweetness. Soft floral and perfume aromatics.

T: Moderately bitter pine and grapefruit, with notes of garlic and onion. Not digging the garlic or the onion. Malt provides some sweetness. Bitterness approaches astringency near the dry terminus.

M: Dry, sticky...astringent. Lower medium bodied. Upper moderate carbonation.

Overall: In a sea of world class hoppy San Diego beers, some being from Green Flash, this is one to skip.

On tap at Green Flash Brewing Company in San Diego, CA.

Pours a clear orange with a foamy beige head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of malt, citrus zest, and herbal hops. Taste is much the same with a dank hop flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with some solid aromas and flavors.

From 12/21/10 notes. Had on tap at Rattle n hum in NYC. This was rebrewed as Green Flash's 8th Anniversary Symposium IPA.

a - Pours an amber color with one inch of white head and light carbonation evident.

s - Smells of fruity malts, citrus hops, and lots of grapefruit.

t - Tastes of grapefruit, bitter citrus hops, and fruity malts. Also some light pine.

m - Medium body and moderate carbonation.

d - A decent IPA with some nice citrus hops to it, but pretty bitter. Would give another shot but wouldn't seek out.

On tap at MM Brandon. Reportedly this a rebrew of the original 2008 beer.
Served in a snifter with a minimal off white head. Orange copper in color. Clear. Moderate lacing. Aroma is muted. Mostly citrusy orange and grapefruit with a bit of tropical notes. Taste is better and more developed. Moderate sweetness. Strong orange notes. Some grapefruit then pithy with a mild earthiness on the back end. Moderate bitterness. Medium bodied. Appropriate carbonation. A pretty good IPA, though I feel as if the style has come a long way over the last five years.

A_light copper with a thick off white head. Cap retention is strong. Nice concentric lacing

S_Pine scented hops and lightly toasted grain

T_Light grain taste is quickly drowned out by a wave of piney bitterness. Pretty dry overall with a crisp bitterness to it. Citrus notes come trough as it warms.

M_lighter bodied with a medium level of carbonation. Dry mouthfeel makes this a pretty nice beer

O_Crisp and dry, pretty much how I like an IPA to be.

A - Huge, three finger, off white head with a tinge of honey to the color. Copper colored body with good clarity. The head takes its time settling and leaves sticky lace behind.

S - Spicy, fruity hops. Pepper and lemon with some floral hints of jasmine and a bit of basil. Some malt lurking in the background, when it manages to squeeze by the hops, it brings a bit of toasty caramel to the party.

T - Bitter, fruity, spicy hops. Lemon-pepper, and savory herbal notes. Becomes spicy and more peppery in the middle . Strong, but not overly harsh bitterness comes in with the finish and while there is a good bit of malt in the background it is pretty well drowned out by the hops.

M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a fairly dry finish.

D - Strongly hoppy IPA, bordering on a DIPA. The hop character is fantastic, especially in the nose, and the bitterness is neither harsh nor overwhelming, but rather refreshing.

Obtained as part of the 2008 BIF race package from Eyedrinkale, 2008 Symposium IPA came in a 12 oz. bottle with a surfing themed label. The beer poured very clear, pale golden in color, and had a stable head at two fingers thick. Like the looks, the smell was also standard West Coast IPA fare with spicy, pney, citric hops dominating. The taste was bit more complex than typical for the style, as the hop bitterness and spice was matched up with a malt bill sufficient to yield 7% ABV and give some sweet backbone. Finish was citric sour and dry. The body felt thick enough to hold up the flavor but was not sticky. Another well made example of the style.
