Hazy, golden, and glowing yellow with a thin, light, airy white head. This leaves spiderwebs and sheets of lacing down the glass. Gorgeous.

The Brett yeast dominates the aroma coupled with a sweet citrus syrup component. Strong, yeasty aroma.

The Brett yeast, a huge level of bitterness, and a stinging sweetness make this a relatively tough beer to drink. There's also quite a bit of alcohol heat that isn't particularly welcome. Interesting idea on paper, but not a particularly tasty drink in the glass.

Medium to thick body with low carbonation--not particularly complementary to this beer.

The incredible level of bitterness and strong alcohol component throughout make this a tough glass to get through. I could only make it through a few ounces.

Draft at Stone Sour Fest 2011.

A: Hazy bright yellow with a big white head.

S: Lots of leathery Brett with some orange and nectarine. Lightly phenolic. The fruit is nice as it warms up, but the Brett grows stronger as well and overwhelms it.

T: Wet leathery Brett melds (clashes) with an upper moderate bitterness. The Brett and bitterness don't mix too well. Orange and a little lemon. Alcohol in the finish with slightly spicy phenolics.

M: Upper light in body with moderate carbonation. Mouthfeel is dry, sticky, and a little chalky.

Overall: An okay beer, but the Brett and bitterness don't mix well in the finish. It comes off as harsh to me.

9th taster at Port's Barrel Blast

A - Amber peach color that had a head that quickly dissipated that was light in color.

S - Sourness, definite funk, peach/pear and leather in the nose

T - It started sweet then quickly went nicely sour with the barnyard funk nose and leather coming out nicely with a linger peach/pear type fruity taste

M - It was light and tart, fairly smooth and then finished with a funky bite that lingered a little

D - The finish with the funky bite was a little harsh, and I definitely picked up the barnyard-esque funk throughout with the sour/tartness and peach/pear fruit flavors -- a nice sour, but I'd say after a full 8oz or more you'd be soured :-P A very nice showing for a sour ale and at 9.9% you'd never catch it - not a hint of that heat in it. Was glad to have tried this sour...

Tasted at Chuck-a-Palooza @ Stone World Bistro & Gardens, San Diego Beer Week '10.

At the bottom end of the straw spectrum, just delving into copper...slightly lighter than the current batch of Le Freak.

Fantastically complex on the nose and the palate. Up front on the aroma is horseblanket and hay, with spicy yeast phenolics following. If I didn't know better, I'd swear I can still smell a little dry-hop aroma, but that's unlikely in a beer this old. Picking apart the brett-infuenced aroma is always tough, but I gotta go with a little leather, too.

The flavor rushes in with the typical 'funky' sour flavors...barnyardy, earthy...not much in the way of lactic tartness, certainly no acetic flavors that I can taste. The brett funk provides a nice drying balance to the malt character for the first couple seconds, then there's just a touch of dried fruit sweetness before the hop bitterness takes over, leaving a lingering interplay of hop astringency and aged-chevre bitterness that might be off-putting to sour beer neophytes. Alcohol was quite subdued...definitely have to disagree with people who claim it's too hot.

Drinkability is certainly low, as some reviewers have noted...but comon, people, this is a brett sour. Since when are they supposed to be quaffable?! Also, saying you don't like this beer because it doesn't taste like Le Freak is just inane. Chuck Silva certainly wasn't billing this as a belgian IPA, as it most certainly is not. Too bad beer advocate doesn't seem to know that. It's much closer to Orval than, say, Houblon Chouffe or Urthel Hop-It. Most of the negative reviews on here seem to be by people who don't get what makes this beer interesting and novel. It's not supposed to taste like Le Freak, and it's not supposed to taste like Rodenbach Grand Cru. sheesh.

Overall a supremely interesting, complex entry into the very limited (but burgeoning) world of SoCal sours.

On-tap at Beachwood BBQ,

A: Pours a hazy gold with a firm finger of white head, some good lace.

S: Definite barrel character, some apple/pear, nice.

T: The Grenache barrel is immediately evident. Quite tannic with red wine on the first sip. Big red currant notes. Lots of coriander type spice, pils malt add to the flavour. Nice leatherly Brett funk in the finish. Very well integrated and balanced, tasty.

M: Medium-bodied, dry as Hell almost parching which I liked a lot. Smooth.

D: My favourite of the night, I can't imagine why this is a C average, but that's not for my palate to decide. I loved this beer. Don't expect a Belgian IPA and enjoy it for what it is.
