Bottled on 1/29/13. Pours a clear copper/amber color with an initial 2-finger bright white head that fades fast and leaves no lace in my tulip.
A surprisingly prominent malt backbone is there in the nose, but make no mistake, the hops are the stars of the show here. Big grapefruit, fresh mango, lemon zest, earthy and piney hops at every turn. Some booze is definitely noticeable as well.
A fitting explosion of hops for a beer named Palate Wrecker. Dank, earthy hops give way to big citrus; grapefruit (a lot of grapefruit), mango, pineapple, lemon zest, and then the sweet, caramel malts come in, giving this beer an outstanding, but subtle, sweetness before finishing off with some piney bitterness and solvent alcohol.
Very smooth mouthfeel that's nice and creamy. Dry finish with some lingering hop bitterness and some alcohol warmth. Good shit.
If you're a hop-head (and why would you be looking at reviews of this unless you were), I would definitely recommend this. Every shade of hops with a creamy mouthfeel and a surprisingly sizable caramel malt backbone holding it all together. Not cheap (my 4-pack was $15), and the alcohol is a little more prominent than I would have liked, but very good.
