Enjoy by 6/24/13

A - Hazy orange that pours a massive head. Looks great in the glass.

S - Easily the highlight of the beer. Tropical notes with orange and grapefruit shining, smells great.

T - At first is a wave of tropical fruit with buttering hops, then on the backend is extreme EXTREME bitterness. Probably the most bitter beer I've had that stays in the back if your tongue for minutes on end.

M - Typical DIPA, medium mouthfeel

O - Palate Wrecker is exactly what it calls itself, don't plan in enjoying any other beers after you have this one. I'd recommend it being the last beer of the night. I enjoyed it but I enjoy big bitter hopbombs. This might have been a bit too much in terms of the backend bitterness for me but to each his own. Great DIPA.

BBD 6/27/14. Pours a clear medium amber with a nice dark ruby hue. Average head and lacing. Rich nose of grapefruit, with hints of other sweet citrus, over a light background of pine and caramel malt. Medium body with a smooth texture. The carbonation level is on the low end of normal. The complex flavor profile is a hop assault over a nice caramel balance. Grapefruit begins the assault with notes of other citrus. It then progresses to pine coupled with a nice intense bitterness that is pine and grapefruit rind. Towards the end, a well balanced caramel sweetness emerges to somewhat soothe the palate. The finish is an alcohol burn at the back of the throat with lingering bitterness and tartness. This one is not for the faint hearted.

This beer pours a cloudy deep gold/orange color (with a certain 'brightness' to it I find in well hopped beers) with a small head that laces nicely down the glass. I was very excited to try it as Green Flash West Coast IPA is one of my favorites.
The smell is very nice, hoppy, fruity kinda like west coast but stronger.
Once it hits your lips.... the flavor is ridiculous, so many layers of hops swimming around in here. It is resinous, and the strongest citrus flavor identifiable is grapefruit. There is a strong pine character and you barely notice the malt body, (but it is there, for me in a good DIPA you almost don't notice the malt except for when it is missing). The finish is strongly bitter and floral.
The mouthfeel is good, carbonated strongly and bitter, very similar mouth feel to their other IPAs.

I recommend this beer to anyone that gets a kick out of really hoppy beers, but note: unlike some DIPAs I've had it isn't hopped just for the sake of hops, the bouquet and different hops really bring out a great flavor that goes past the assaulting bitterness. The company says it is made with hopped wort... but all IPAs are made with hopped wort so I'm not sure why they advertised that in this particular beer? Also the 12 oz was under half the price of the 22 oz, so not sure what the incentive would be to buy the 22 oz... (maybe they weren't expecting the liquor store to sell the 12s as singles). And at 9.5% one of these just left me in a nice fuzzy place.

Served up in my tulip at cellar temperature.

An unstoppable three-finger, slightly off-white head puffs up no matter how carefully poured. The body is a crystal clear dark golden orange. One might call it amber.

Resinous pine, pink grapefruit, and dank hops fill the aroma. Ahh... these are some of my favorite IPA scents...

And it hits! A hurricane of hugely bitter hops! The flavor has a resinous and resonating explosion of bitterness that tastes of citrus, pine, and grapefruit peel. It has a dry, astringent bitterness in the finish that reveals a little bit of maltiness: that splendid biscuity breadiness that the finer IPAs possess. Seldom does an IPA deliver such intense hoppiness as this. What more can one ask for in a DIPA's flavor?

Feel? Oh yeah. The feel. Sorry but the deliciously dank, bafflingly bitter hop flavor has me distracted, I'm affraid. The feel is ideal... for unleashing the untamed hop beast within.

Few DIPAs have made an impression on me like this one has. As I sip it, my palate not only adjusts to the unbridled bitterness, but begins to crave it. For true connoisseurs of IPAs, this is not a palate wrecker, but a palate placebo. Bathe in the bitterness, my friends.
