Date: 3/23/14
Location: Halftime Poughkeepsie
Glassware: Tulip
Appearance: Copper to brown. With the carbonation cascading down the side of glass. With next to no carbonation on a pour.
Aromatics: Hops all the way. Some orange as well, a little malt and I don't get much else.
Flavor: The mouthfeel starts very creamy. Then the bitterness of the hops kicks in. Almost no fruit hits my tongue some orange peel though.
Finish: Some orange peel remains, with the bitterness of the hops. A lot of the hops.

10 oz. pour into a tulip. Liberty Union, Chester Springs, PA

A- Orange gold. Clear. Light white head, but very thin.

S- Citrus, pine, some toasted notes in the malt.

T- Some pine notes and dry citrus peel. Malt is barely noticeable. Fairly juicy.

M- Medium body, some hoppy boozy burn but less bitter than the name suggests.

O- This was juicier than expected, and less palate wrecking than expected.

My first time blasting this one. I've had a chance before and sort of chickened out, based more on the name than anything. But it's been a few months and I've gotten a taste for extreme hops, so let's give it a shot.

Appearance: Dark, reddish gold. Giant head that was very slow to form. I poured this right out of the fridge which typically reduces head, and for a few seconds there was nothing but eventually the foam rose up to its full height. Very sticky appearance. I poured it too fast and the bubbles rose past the top of the glass but never overflowed. Must be a lot of hops (duh)!

Smell: lots of hops (duh again). Big West Coast attributes of citrus and pine or whatever. Lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, all of the hottest fruits are somewhat identifiable in here. It really reminds me of a stronger Lagunitas Sucks. Deliciously fragrant.

Taste: intense, but actually not as intense or flavorful as the nose implies. They added a lot of bready malts to balance the hops and I think it may have actually been too much. It balances out the (very powerful) bitterness, but the sweeter malts take over somewhat from the super fruity hops. Still quite good, but a very odd beast in terms of balance. The citrus hops pop out more as it warms, but the finish is still all malt. Bitterness is high, not unpleasant, just kind of odd with how the flavors are balanced.

Mouthfeel: sticky as all hell, likely due to the mass amounts of hops. Medium to heavy body from huge malts. Just about right for a big DIPA.

Overall: A confusing beer. Enjoyable to drink, way more enjoyable to smell, but in the end it left me wondering why they added so much malt to balance out a beer that is advertised as a "palate wrecker". I'm glad I tried it but at this price I likely won't have it again. Still very tasty, just didn't live up to its full potential as I see it.

12oz. bottle poured into imperial pint glass.

A: Pours an incredibly hazy/foggy dark amber/orange. Not at all transparent. A mildly aggressive pour results in a huge 3 1/2" head that takes ages to deflate to an inch thick head that retains like a champion. It's not faltering in the least. HUGE splotches of thick, sticky lacing is left everywhere the head once touched. This is one hella impressive looking glass of beer!

S: PURELY hops and wonderfully dank. Extreme citrus profile, grapefruit mainly, to be expected. A bit of pine resin underneath. No malt to be found; no complaints from me. This is exactly what I want to smell from a brew called Palate Wrecker.

T: The initial sip of this, as well as the next two or three sips, are purely palate pulverizing hop atomic bombs. One of the most intense rushes of grapefruity citrus I've ever experienced. Tons of bitter pine resin in the finish as well as the aftertaste. The bitterness sticks around long after the beer has gone down. Midway through the beer now, I guess my palate has adjusted to baffling amount of hop bitterness. Each sip leads off with a well-rounded caramel malt note that offers little balance before it gets bullied by those dominating hops. This one, even with the appearance of malts midway through, is bone crushingly bitter and truly exquisite.

M: The awe-inducing qualities of Palate Wrecker unfortunately stop here. A slightly above medium body with moderate carbonation and a bit of slickness. Coats the palate nicely without feeling too sticky in the finish. The mouthfeel is definitely really good, but falls short of incredible.

O: Boy oh boy, this is everything I had hoped it would be; however, it was EXTREMELY hard to score, for me. Because even though everything about it stopped me in my tracks by how perfect I believe it to be, I can't rate it perfect overall for the sole fact that this brew is so ass-kicking that I literally could not indulge in it often. With that being said, this has creeped into my favorites and will be revisited for sure as a once-in-a-blue-moon treat.

Poured out a clear deep amber with a big creamy white head. There is great retention and nice sticky lacing. The aroma is big citrus hops, with distinct grapefruit notes, and hints of caramel malt in the background. The taste is also big hops, but splendidly balanced against the malt backbone. The mouthfeel is a little thinner than the taste and aroma indicated but it's not at all thin or watery. A great big DIPA.
