Bottle poured into a snifter in several increments. A reddish golden bronze color sporting a nice creamy beige head, I am indeed preparing for a palate-wrecking experience. Skimmed a couple of reviews below and cannot resist mentioning ... To the guy who was confused, the mash is sparged with a further dose of hopped wart, as opposed to the more typical water. The basis for the beer is a hopped wort, further purged of fermentables by yet more hopped wort. In any event, the aroma here is perfumy sweet, floral and herbal yet with a subtle butterscotch vibe, citrus, vinous fruit like white wine, and some dry white pepper. Green Flash manages to coax some complex multifaceted hop flavors out of its IPAs and this is no exception. The initial tastes are on the light side, some candied ginger, sweet tropical mango and lychee, something decidedly floral ... Honeysuckle? These elements give way to some grapefruit and blood orange citrus, green tea ... The bitterness ain't wrecking my palate initially, although now there's some interesting burnt mint and leather flavors revealing themselves. Soapy, slick mouthfeel with a few bubbles but not too fizzy. And BOOM, there's the bitter: Juniper and menthol, celery stalk and black pepper. About halfway through the bottle, a rank, powerfully resinous bitterness assails the mouth, like oolong tea steeped with pine needles. Some dried apricot appears in the otherwise pungent finish. Quite thick and syrupy but this does little to reign in the hoppy assault. While I have had more bitter DIPAs, at least in terms of raw power, this one steals the show when it comes to balancing aggression with nuance. Had to track it down in BC rather than Alberta.

Type: 22-oz. bottle
Glass: Lagunitas pint glass
From: Costco in Mission Valley (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $7.29 (w/ Costco card)
Purchased: April 22, 2014
Consumed: April 29, 2014
Misc.: Best by June 11, 2014

Poured a dark orange, amber hazy color with two fingers of khaki white head. A decent amount of bubbles coming up from the bottom. Average amount of uneven layered spotty lacing along the sides of the glass. Good retention.

Smelled a pleasant mix of hops and malts. Got floral hops, citrus hops, Cascade hops, spruce, rye hops, mint toothpaste, amber malts, caramel, some slightly wet earthy malts and some unknown spicy notes.

Tasted pretty much what I expected it to after the smell. Got those heavy, earthy malts more than the hops. Caramel, rye, amber, citrus hops, light honey, light lemon and sour tropical fruit, all with an unknown spicy bitter note lingering on the tongue long after.

Medium body. Creamy texture. Lively carbonation. Long, bitter finish.

Not as good as I hoped, but still a decent imperial IPA.

Poured in a Spiegalgau IPA glass.

Beautiful clear light copper color with a 4F head. Carbonation bubbles from the bottom of the glass/

Aroma- grapefruit, some vanilla. Not as strong as other West Coast DIPAs, but quite good.

Mouth Feel- very carbonated as expected.

Taste. Excellent grapefruit, citrus. The finish is exceptionally hoppy( 100 IBUs) which rounds out the flavor profile. The hoppy bitterness lingers on my tongue.

An excellent DIPA- very West Coast. One of my favorite breweries from this region.

Appearance: Pours an attractive amber color. Carbonation is barely visible. Moderate beige head with some minor lacing.

Smell: Hops comes through as grapefruit and pine. The malt presence is faint and earthy.

Taste: Hops hit the tongue hard. Give it a swish and the hop oils will envelope the tongue in a warm, comforting manner. Grapefruit flavors linger, with barely noticeable malt notes of sweet tea.

Mouthfeel: The initial burst of hop oils hits like sandpaper; in a good way, if that makes sense. Drink quickly, because I found as the beer approached room temperate this effect vanished. Sticky, but not cloying,

Overall: Above average. The citrus hop notes are really not complex at all, but the sheer presence of hop oils hits the tongue hard, and I like that. There is a faint malt back that is intriguing. Overall, one of the better DIPA's that I have had recently, up against Victory DirtWolf and Flying Dog Double Dog, all of which I have tried for the first time yesterday and today.
