Had it on tap at The Crow's Nest in johnstown

A: darker than normal pale ale. Same coloration of yuengling. Pretty clear overall.

S: fruity. Banana and grapefruit. Astringency that is very welcome. Pungent, almost smells bitter.

T: holy crap the hops. Sooo bitter, but so tasty. Citrusy to almost a fault. This beer legitimately will wreck your palate. This beer is not for the faint of heart when it comes to hops. I would compare to a Sierra Nevada hoptimum.

M: stuff like this is normally a little heavier, but it's pretty crisp. The body is a real surprise considering the overpowering nature of the beer

If you like hops, you must try it. If you like malt, God bless, crack one open, take a sip, and pass it on to your hop head friends

22oz Bomber to Pint Glass

A - Light copper/amber with rich tan head. Some lacing on the glass.

S - Hop citrus punch! Mild alcohol bite to the nose. Somewhat piney.

T - Hop bomb for sure. Grapefruit all the way.

M - Just enough carbonation and smooth on the palate. Excellent balance.

O - I would definitely buy this one again. Very well balanced for DIPA. Not too much alcohol in the taste and really is smooth once it warms up a bit. Very enjoyable.

Tasted in an IPA glass over 25 minutes from a bottle "best-dated" 7/2/14.

The base is a misty copper orange with a huge, clumpy-merange head stained with the pour. Large patches of lacing hold on and a thick central island floats deep into the drinking session.

The nose is heavily dominated by hemp bound by a ring of smoke. There is some lime and pine and a touch of grapefruit in there somewhere...rounded out by a nice dose of dried apricot. It's hard to find malt notes.

Caramel malts lead the flavor profile. Pine slides in on a foundation of earth, and citrus sprouts from the top--pithy grapefruit, mostly, and a touch of pineapple. Some of the smoke and hemp show up in the back half, melded to a bit of dank funk like apricot Stilton. Then it's long and bitter, reflecting its appellation.

In the mouth, it's sticky and heavy with resin. Weighs heavily in paralingual gutters with some sharper, drying bitterness on top of the tongue. The start is creamy, and then the moderately high carbonation slices through to give the taste experience a bit of spice. The full body with all these facets is the highlight of the brew.

Overall, I can't say I largely enjoy drinking this beer. But I certainly appreciate the work involved in creating it, and the interplay of some imposing elements. A worthwhile experience.

A - Hazy copper with slightly off-white head. Leaves nice lacing. Head never really dissipates.

S - This is where it's at. Possibly the best smelling beer I've ever had. It smells like fresh. Fresh hops. Fresh malted barley. Amazing aroma. Lemon, apricot.

T - Very well balanced. Very tiny let down after the smell, but that just speaks to how great I thought the smell was. The hops and malt, mostly caramel, are fighting it out on this one. Hops comes through a bit stronger, but I feel it goes back and forth. That's why I say balanced. The big surprise here is No Alcohol roughness. For 9.5% this is hidden very well.

M - Medium to thick body, medium carb. Coats the palate with bitterness like an IPA or DIPA should.

O - I was a little skeptical of this at first. I love fresh Green Flash, but I've been burnt in the past with the IPA being outdated (my own fault I know), but this beer is just awesome. Fresh is the biggest adjective. It tastes like this was just brewed and then bottled this morning.

Another single I bought today (12oz, $4.00) at The Beer Store. Hadn't done much in the way of hops lately, so have to make amends...

Again, using my fancy-schmancy Sammy glass.... Color is a lovely, clear copper, with plentiful carbo. Head is a touch off-white/light tan, and looks creamy and fine, lasting well. Lacing is all over the sides, too. Nose is solidly hoppy with some light maltiness mixed in. Feel is smooth and silky, with a medium-plus body.

Flavor has a good bit of malty action, more than I was led to believe by the guy at the store, who said this was purely hoppy. Bummed? Hell no! I like a bit of malt, even in DIPAs... Now there is a solid whack of hops here, too, but it's not overly bitter. There's citrus, some resiny pine, a hint of apricot.... Quite nice, all in all... Had this back-to-back with The Illinois, and I'm not sure which I like more.... Leaning a bit towards this one.... Zum Wohl!!

Glass Used: Snifter

Appearance: Deep orange-gold with a dense fluffy white head.

Smell: Sweet fruit - pineapple, lemon, orange & grapefruit is in abundance here, along with nice floral sweet honey and piney hop aroma. I get bready malts here as well. This is a intense smelling beer.

Taste: Malty caramel arrives first but gets pushed aside as the big citrus and pine resin flavors bulldoze to center stage. A long bitter finish.

Mouthfeel:Sticky and tacky feeling that totally coats the mouth and tongue. Creamy notes are there to ease the hops along to the finish.

Overall: The is a fantastically bitter double IPA. While the hoppy bitterness is huge, the malt does a very good job pulling back on their reins. I can only imagine how much more intense this would be if the malt profile was smaller. Great job Green Flash!
