It's been a while since I've reviewed for the heck of it - might as well give it another shot...

2010 12 oz bottle, poured into a Bruery tulip at cellar temp.

A - Looks pretty good - the requisite black is here for sure, and the dark head hangs around for several minutes. Perhaps slightly too much carbonation showing, but no judgements yet.

S - Plenty of barrel coming through, along with what must have been a very roasty base beer. The effect is more bitterness than booze, and this skews the effect towards harshness.

T&M - Harsh is right - hard to say if it is from the carbonation, the roast malts, or the oak, but there is a definite astringency present. I can tell there is a thick stout under it all, but something is overwhelming that. The depth and character I like in a barrel aged stout isn't here.

O - Not bad, but not one of the best. Just a little too much puckering harshness throughout to bring it from good to great.

A - Jet black appearance, dense cocoa colored head, splotchy lacing, opaque

S - Vanilla, fudge brownies, oak, coconut, dark cherries, caramel and toffee.

T - Dry cocoa powder, dark chocolate, and some fresh oak. Black coffee. Hints of bourbon and coconut.

M - Velvety smooth, but not thick like more imperial stouts, more medium bodied with slightly higher carbonation then expected.

O - This is a great stout for sure. Glad I traded for this one.

Bottle vintage 2010. Pours black with thin brown head. Strong bourbon aroma followed by notes of chocolate and dried fruit. No heat. Flavor is smooth bourbon with bitter sweet chocolate finish. Medium bodied with a nice cola texture. Nicely balanced stout.

Big thanks to dfillius for sharing this one! Been wanting to try this for awhile.

A - Pours pitch black with less than one finger of tan head. Head dissipates quickly and leaves no lacing.

S - Nice sweet bourbon aroma with a lot of vanilla. Smells like dense chocolate cake. A bit of fruit (maybe cherry) and some coffee aroma.

T - Lots of chocolate upfront. Slightly sweet, but mostly bittersweet. Vanilla follows quickly with bourbon. Bourbon is a bit subdued, but very nice. Really tasty.

M - Medium/full mouthfeel, but not heavy. A bit of noticeable alcohol, but relatively mild. A faint amount of lingering booze.

O - Big, flavorful stout, but not at all in your face. Nice bourbon presence, and very chocolatey. Would love to have this again.

Thanks to bu11zeye for sharing this bottle. I have been looking forward to this one.

The beer pours a dark brown to black color with a very small tan head. The aroma is oak, heavily roasted malt, bourbon, maple and chocolate. You get a ton of barrel-aged aspects in the aroma, along with a lot of stout notes.

The flavor is just as complex. I get a lot of heavily roasted/burnt malt, along with some oak, maple and bourbon notes. The alcohol is present and is very hot.

Medium to thick mouthfeel and low carbonation.

A very nice barrel-aged beer that I think may get better with age.

Pours pretty black, but not jet black. Smells fantastic. Loads of vanilla and chocolate. Barrel aging is present. Taste is SOOO smooth. ABV just isn't present at all. It's like sipping a desert. Semi sweet, but dry as well. Vanilla, dark chocolate, loads of malt, bourbon is there but blends very nicely with the rest of the flavors....just fantastic. Mouthfeel is perfect. Huge but smooth. Insanely creamy. This is one of the better BA stouts I've ever had. Nuff said.

12oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

This thing is badass, it's black, it's oily, its evil. The head is as dark as milk chocolate, it's fine and thick and creamy. It starts to fade down a bit but the lacing stays - just reminding you of how dark and huge it was. Nose is bourbon, it's chocolate, it's coffe grounds and booze - it's all business here.

This is devilishly good, it's rich and delicious, the bourbon is there and it's not hiding. There's this really rich chocolaty creaminess about it that's soothing and perfect for a cool night. I almost bought a bottle of bourbon tonight, but I'm having this instead and it was a spectacular decision.

Mouthfeel is the only minor detractor, it's a bit light on the tongue, and the carbonation is a bit sharp and light, but mellows as it warms. This is a delicious brew worthy of any beer lover.

Huge thanks to stawn for hooking me up!

Bottle (2010)

Green Flash Brewing Co.
Mira Mesa, CA

(Aged for 1+ year)

Black and thick in body with very little visible carbonation and only a small film of a dark brown head. This leaves irregular, splotchy lines of lace down the glass. Appropriate, especially for a barrel-aged stout of this age.

This smells like freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, with nice amounts of bourbon, oak, and vanilla complementing the delicious aroma of fresh baked goods. There's just a hint of roast, but it's very mild. No alcohol presence in the aroma whatsoever.

If the aroma was freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, this is double chocolate chip cookies with fresh bourbon whipped cream on top and a glass of espresso. Of course this is hyperbole, but this is an incredibly rich dessert consisting of chocolate, cookie dough, vanilla, bourbon, oak, and a hint of coffee. If the flavors were just a bit more expressive, this would score perfectly. That being said, it's damn near perfect, as is.

Medium to full in body with low carbonation. Marvelously drinkable. Coating.

Sublimely good, though I don't think it has anywhere left to go in the cellar. Drink up!

Good black and brown pour, minimal head. Great faint hint of bourbon to this, very mellow.

Great amount of chocolate in here without getting sweet and delving into RIS territory. Maybe even a tiny bit of some kind of dark fruit to this. Alcohol presence isn't discernable, really hides it in this behind the small bourbon and big chocolate lead. Rather than vanilla, seems like it could have coconut. Or both, neither coming anywhere near anything more than a ghostlike presence.

Not super viscous, stays light and very drinkable. Thanks to stawn for throwing this in as an extra, definitely the best extra I've ever had. Shit, its about one of the best beers I've ever had period. Definitely my favorite Green Flash beer.

Near black in color; hazy and opaque. The dark tan head has moderate retention.
Smells of a bourbon barrel and dark malts, but too little in the malt dept. for the level of bourbon barrel.

T: dark malt; cherries; burnt wood; licorice and oak. Complex and rich, but eventually only the bourbon barrel lingers on.

M: very smooth, with the feel of beer at about 6% ABV

O: wood flavor and aroma from the barrel aging is a bit over the top. Just way too woody.
