A - Pours with two fingers of white head on top of a clear, dark golden body. The head settles down fairly quickly and leaves decent lace on the glass.

S - Herbal hops, clove, and a touch of pear.

T - Sweet, thick malt up front with some clove and lemon notes. Spicy wheat notes in the middle and a finish of clove, pear, and lightly herbal hops.

M - Medium-thick body, moderately high carbonation, and a balanced finish.

D - Not bad, a bit too malty for my taste. The yeast character does little to lift the thick malt off the palate and only provides some generic notes of clove and pear. The aroma promises some hop character to balanced things out, but there is little actual hop character in the flavor profile. A decent, drinkable saison, but lacking compared to some of the better examples of the style.

Big foam-up in pouring, but leaves a nice whipped cream head in the narrow Crooked Line tulip. Cloudy amber golden color in the glass and spritzy on the tongue. Just a little lemony with a slight Belgian dryness.

Light bodied but with some marshmallowy foamy sensation that is quite a treat. The aroma is musty and yeasty. Maybe the lightest Saison I've had byt also one of the most drinkable. Another flavorful lower-alcohol brew and with 0.2 less ABV would be in the winner's circle in my Utah Supermarket Beer Sweepstakes. From the 22 oz bottle bought at Liticker's in Ocean Beach.

Poured from a 22oz bottle into a tulip glass.

A: The beer is a light gold color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a spotty lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains wheat, spices, light caramelized malts, Belgian yeast, bananas, citrus and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts out bready with flavors of wheat, Belgian yeast and a hearty but not too heavy malt character. Then some sweetness comes in from flavors of bananas, citrus and a complex but not over-powering spice combination. The hops presence is mild but creates a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet and slightly bready.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, mild kick, good representation of style, this is a solid beer to drink for a while if you’re in the mood for the style.

Picked this up in Kentucky

Pours a bright gold with 2 fingers of ivory head. Average head retention & lacing

S: Phenols, colves & breadyness

T: Follows the nose, peppery with lemons up front. Grains of paradise, phenols & faint orange peels as this warms, plus a little bit of pineapple. Finishes with more grains of paradise, faint lemons, & white pepper

MF: Medium bodied, firm carobonation & good balance

Easy drinker, a nice saison, but nothing special

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, bottled on 3/4/2013. Pours lightly cloudy golden straw color with a 2-3 finger foamy white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Light spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of lemon, pear, apple, orange peel, coriander, ginger, clove, pepper, cracker, wheat, grass, floral, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Nice aromas with good complexity and balance of spice and yeast ester notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon, pear, apple, orange peel, coriander, clove, pepper, wheat, cracker, grass, floral, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Lingering notes of citrus, light fruits, coriander, clove, pepper, wheat, cracker, grass, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a short bit. Nice balance and complexity of yeast and spice flavors; with light malt presence and no cloying flavors after the finish. High carbonation and light bodied; with a very crisp, smooth, and prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with zero warming present after the finish as expected for being under 5%. Overall this is a nice session saison style. Good balance and complexity of yeast and spice flavors; and extremely smooth and crisp to drink. A nicely enjoyable offering.

For an unfiltered beer, it's awfully clear. Bright yellow, big head that slips down to nil with a quickness.

Aroma: Spice is on top of things, initially, backed up with citric notes, and Belgian funkification.

Taste: Crisp, refreshing bite, clean, smooth. Light bodied, with a mild hop bitterness. Light bodied, easy drinking. Bright citrus character reveals itself, distinguished from the spice.
Good hot weather quencher here. Very toss-back-able, although I feel it may be slightly strong, perhaps higher than 7%, but not much higher, could even be 8+? (No, it's 4.2%!)

I like this. Good beer, and I can drink it.

A: Pours a medium straw to light golden yellow in color. The beer has a finger tall soft bright white head that reduces to a medium sized thick patch, a thin film covering the majority of the surface of the beer, and a thin ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate amounts of lacing are observed.

S: A pretty mild smell overall for this beer with light notes of lemon citrus, peppery spice, yeast, and just a hint of funkiness.

T: Light to moderate amounts of peppery spice, contributed from both the yeast and the ginger. Also there is light amount of citrus - lemon and orange - and hints of funkiness.

M: Light bodied with slightly more than moderate amounts of carbonation. Quite dry in the finish.

O: Easy to drink and enjoyable - I find the introduction of the ginger to be quite complementary to the flavor profile of this style. Not sure how strong this beer is but it certainly seems like it could be sessionable.

Thanks to jtd1969 for sharing this bomber with me.

A - pours a bright yellow with a nice cap of white head that has good retention that fades to a thin lacing

S - white grapes, faint coriander, Belgian yeast

T - white grapes, apples, faint spice

M - crisp, medium bodied

This is a decent saison. It's very drinkable, but not impressively flavored. It was nice to try once, but I'll probably pass in the future.

Green Flash Saison Diego

LOOK: Clear straw yellow, bone white crackling head, some lace.

SMELL: Aroma of horseblanket, white pepper, citrus hops, mild fruit notes.

TASTE: Bitter, with a light funk. Citrus hops, peppery Belgian yeast, did I say bitter? Small earthy dirty funk, pale malt backing, grapefruit rind. A light peppery spice can be attributed to the use of Grains of Paradise in the brewing process.

FEEL: Light to medium bodied, well carbonated. Semi dry with a hop bite.

OVERALL: A very nice earthy saison from Green Flash. I really like how the brewers are branching out into Belgian styles. A beer brewed with Brettynomces is in the lineup (Rayon Vert) and there is also a Belgian IPA Tripel (Le Freak).

Poured from a bottle into a shaker pint, the beer is a bright, vibrant, straw-gold coloring with a ton of tiny carbonation bubbles throughout the body and a sparse, filmy, bright white head. Nose of toast, clove, coriander, floral highlights, and a hint of nutmeg. Flavors are tangy sweet, with a buttery biscuit backbone and a flourish of spices, including clove and coriander. Very effervescent in the body, keeping the flavor profiles light and slightly frothed. The aftertaste is toasty and grainy, leading to a clean, effervesced finish that is crisp and slightly drying. Refreshing beer with a profile that is easy to drink, but a body that makes it a slow sipper.

A very creamy take on a Saison, and definitely on the soft side. I'd prefer some more crispness here, and a bit deeper flavors. Pours a hazy golden with a small beaded pure white head. A bit sweet in the nose, and fairly spicy, with lots of clove, some white pepper, and a nice bit of citrus. The taste is where it falls apart a bit- too soft and muted with some light citrus and spice, mostly orange and lemon and some white pepper in the finish. Definitely no funk either. Just decent.

From the Green Flash website:

"Saison Diego™
Ale Brewed with Spices

Unfiltered golden farmhouse ale, brewed with Seville orange peels, Chinese ginger and grains of paradise. Light, bright, spicy aromas, lively carbonation and earthy flavors co-mingle with musty notes that add funky complexity."

No ABV on bottle or website IBUs 20.

Very slightly chill haze in a clear golden beer with a tall fluffy white head. The Brewer did nail the looks.

Smell is slight honeysuckle malt and wild flowers on hay with a slight coriander scent. Pretty much a Hennepin clone.

Starts out dry with the taste of hay and a little bee pollen with a coriander aftertaste. Gets a little sweeter as you drink it. Mild flavor with a very mild noble hop taste at the end. Very clean taste with a slight wheat malt flavor at the end. Didn't detect the ginger, I'm slightly allergic to it and this didn't make my nose itch either. Grains of Paradise, never tasted one so I have no idea if it made a difference in the taste.

Mouthfeel is light.

Overall this is a good beer. Something of a Hennepin clone.

Purchased from BevMo in Sunnyvale, CA.

Pours a really light yellow colour, with a very faint haze to it and really light weight. Head is an enormous frothy mound of pure white. It certainly looks lively and vibrant.

Nose is round, slightly funky and slightly sweet, with some plasticky notes, a hint of appleskin and a rubbed sweet citrus tone. It has some fragrant sweet herbs like asian mint or Thai basil as well. It's pretty fresh, lively and pleasant.

Taste is similarly light and pleasant, with a really pleasant cleanness, no phenolics and no excess of yeast on the back. Hints of funk, minimal acidity, but a pleasant roundness and more of that fragrant herbal crispness. Really, it's quite tasty, and stylistically pretty good.

Very drinkable, and almost excruciatingly refreshing. Really, you just want to drink this down. Moreover, it's a pretty well-made Saison—a style that I feel is rarely done well outside Belgium.

On draft at Tap and Barrel, Smithtown, NY.

Poured a light copper hue with a one finger foamy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured light esters and a grassy hop.

The taste was lightly grainy with biting esters and a grassy hop.

The mouthfeel was toward the lighter side of the style with a vigorous carbonation.

Overall a serviceable saison.

A - Nice, towering white head which is what I'm looking for from the style. Ok retention and lace. Hazy wheat colored body.

S - Sweat wheat, lemon pound cake, honey, ginger. Surprisingly wit like.

T - Orange, light tartness, wheat, honey, coriander. Again, more wit like than saison, but not bad.

M - Bright, medium-light frame. Nice carbonation.

O - On whole the beer isn't bad, but it's way too sweet and wheaty for the style.

Poured from 12oz bottle into a tulip.

Appearance: yellow-golden hue with a bit of haze and a very light effervescence. Head is two fingers of frothy white foam. A decent-looking brew!

Smell: lightly sweet malt with a good funk. I can't really tell what the intended spicing is, but it's kind of materializing as the corn-pops character that you get in beers brewed with adjunct maize. It's a sense that doesn't really work.

Taste: a bit of sweetness, a light tartness, a hint of funk and bitterness -- and that little jolt of corn pops. I really can't figure out the spicing, but I doubt this beer has corn in the recipe. It's not bad, but it is a little bit messy and unfocused.

Mouthfeel: light body with a surprising carbonation, given its low level of apparent effervescence. There's actually a good creaminess here.

Overall: this beer is decent, but it just has a little something I don't quite like.

Poured from a brown 12 oz. bottle. Has a bright yellow color with a 1 inch head, lots of carbonation. Smell is musty, spices, yeast. Taste is lots of spice, some lemons, a bit of mustiness as well, very easy drinking. Feels light in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer, but there are better saisons out there.

Poured into 10oz goblet. Poured a cloudy pale yellow color with about an inch of white head that quickly dissipated and left light to moderate lacing. There were a fair amount of floaties when I got to the bottom of the bottle.

The aroma featured a big, bright yeasty spice scent, and was supported by nice solid grains. The flavor profile was pretty similar, yeast and spice over a nicely solid grain base.

The body, while very pleasant, was a pretty typical medium, and had a very dry finish. Drinkability was good, I could put this into my Saison rotation. Overall, not a ground breaking example of the style, but still a good, solid one. Worth trying if you see it.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with a bottling date of 08/14/13. Sampled on September 26, 2013.

The pour is pale yellow with a white short-lived head and a definite haze. Acceptable lacing.

The aroma is a little musty but still emboldened with the yeasty, biscuity, and spicy esters one comes to expect from a Belgian style farmhouse. Some pepper perhaps. Mild hop note.

The body is thinner than I might have expected.

The taste has a pale malt character with some pepper, coriander, and a moderately sour finish that tends to linger.

Howler fill at Liquor Shed in Casper.

A hazy light gold pour that produced about an inch of foam but it never goes away. Lacing? Yep.

It smells some what spicy with some of that ginger, coriander, hint of pepper, and a dash of lemon or orange?

The taste matches the smell. Good gingery notes and oranges, The ginger gives me a little bit of heat when I swish the beer in my mouth. I don't really get any coriander but it's still a good tasting brew.

Light body and carbonation.

A pretty good Saison and the fact that it's only 4.2% abv is something I like aboot it. Yeah, the body does suffer but there's no problem drinking the 32oz in one sitting.

12oz bottle

A- Poured into a tulip glass. Pours a clear golden orangish color with an off-white head with good retention and lacing.

S- The aroma is citrus, apples, and spices with fruity esters and an almost chardonnay-like character in the nose as well.

T- The taste features malt and a moderate sweetness up front with the spices coming in the dry finish.

M- The mouthfeel is light bodied and heavily carbonated.

O- Overall, I would say this is a pretty average saison. It is not out of this world but not terrible either.

A - Sered a pale cloudy medium orange with a fizzy active white hea with great retention.

S - Light lemony and full spices.

T - Again light lemon, wheat, and weak spice.

D - Very light with good carbonation.

O - Light, too light to be honest. I love saisons, but this dissapoints.

Starts with a fruity sour aroma. Hazy straw to gold, white fluffy head, very clean and light, has the saison malt, as it warms more Saison flavors emerge and more malty caramel comes out as well.

Bottled on 05/26/13.

The colour is pale gold with a tint of cool orange. The liquid is clear. The foam builds with a fizzing sound; it is white compact and two fingers high. It sinks slowly leaving lots of lacing.

The smell is hoppy and bitter. Orange peel and tart unripe berries. Soapy phenols and spicy flavours. Sticky sweet notes in the background. Cleaner and sweeter than expected.

The taste is fresh and bitter-tart with smooth fruity notes of orange peel, yeast, alcohol, orange juice and cloves. Medium body. The (less sweet) aftertaste got some alcohol, peppery spicy flavours and refreshing bitter hops. Cardamom and cooves in the finish.

The carbonation is strong, the many large bubbles are long-lived. The liquid is light.

Easy to drink with pleasant spices. I am surprised that the bitterness is so fresh after almost a year.
