Reviewed from notes. Had on-tap at CCB tasting room. Served in a CCB snifter.
A: Pours a dark amber brown - dark but almost clear. Small off-white head atop a modest amount of visible carbonation.
S: Cedar, sweet malt, and caramelized brown sugar. There is a subtle fruitiness also - plums?
T: Follows the nose, with some pine hoppiness as well. The cedar isn't overdone, and compliments the flavors nicely. Very tasty.
M: Medium body, good carbonation sensation. Alcohol certainly noticeable but doesn't detract.
O: I really enjoyed this one. I think the cedar worked well add some dryness to what could have been an overly sweet beer. The flavors played very well with each other, and I could definitely see myself having another.

Candela - A Rye Barley wine aged on Cedar spirals
Cigar City/Green Flash Collab
On tap at Green Flash Brewing – 6oz pour
A: Dark amber body with pristine clarity topped with a thin dark khaki head. Displaying some decent retention efforts for such a big ABV brew. Leaves light dots and some speckled stick down the glass.
S: I get forward aromas of booze, caramelized malts, and spiced raisins. There is a light earthiness coming through and a slight vinous factor as well. Cedar is rather faint as the deep kettled malts pretty much take over. Warm and inviting nose and not overly boozy.
T: Tastes of dark toffee and ripe plum mixed with a bit of dried fig and raisin. There is a whisper of wood spice and light earthiness there but the deep kettle caramelized malts make up the greater portion of flavors. The Cedar gets buried here and somewhat hard to discern at times. Lower hop bitter presence while maintaining enough of a juicy punch to carry the big body and noticeable alcohol flavors. A crisp, slightly spicy rye flavor does emerge in the finish. Overall this is very smooth and making for a nice sip.
M: Moderately full body with a nice smooth and creamy texture. There is a bit of ABV warming and lower perceived bitterness on the palate. Has an oily consistency throughout that lingers down after the finish.
D: This is a nice barley wine but I expected more coming from these two great breweries to be honest. Reminds me a lot like the regular Green Flash Barley Wine with some additional rye and wood spice influence. I think a proper barrel aging and 750ml packaging/bottle conditioning would have represented this brew in a much better way.
