After spending 4 years in Brandy barrels it became time to unleash the dark monster within. Thick toffee aromatics exude with dense layers of fig, molasses, caramel, and a medley of dark fruits. Sweet flavors of toffee and caramel mingle with the warming spice of vanilla, sherry-like notes, and brandy barrel oak tannin. When served above 55 degrees Fahrenheit (highly recommended) more dark fruits like plum, date, raisin, and fig are further revealed. Our CEO/Founder Mike Hinkley has enjoyed pairing this Brandy Barrel Aged Barleywine with a big stuffed “Shaggy” dog that came from the local fair carnies and therefore we now have “Sleepin' with Shaggy”.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.
Appearance - Deep reddish amber. Big khaki head with great retention. A little leggy.
Smell - It's all brandy. Fruity. Alcoholic, but not too much.
Taste - Straight brandy flavor. Fruity. Boozy. Dry. Some caramel, but really I can't taste anything beyond brandy. Maybe some oak.
Mouthfeel - Very dry. Boozy. Oaky.
Overall - I'm gonna go out on a limb and say four years is too long for a brandy barrel. I can only taste caramel behind it.

Ruby red with a vigorous off-white head. Aromas of dark fruit, caramel, cherry cordial and boozy desserts. 4 years in brandy barrels pretty much eliminated any chance of subtlety or smoothness. This hits you in the face like a ton of bricks. The 12.5% ABV is about as well hidden as an toddler who thinks covering their eyes for hide and seek is going to prevent anyone from finding them. It’s mouth-numbingly boozy. Flavors of brandy-soaked dark fruits, toffee, burnt sugars, and alcohol burn. It’s as rough as a Detroit road, and just as dangerous.

Appearance- The beer poured a deep murky brown color with a tan colored head that left lacing on the glass.
Smell - The beer ha a sticky sweet nose with hints of nuttiness.
Taste - At the front, bourbon gives way to very strong black licorice. Raisins, mild chocolate, and brandy round iut the profile. The brandy profile is pretty mellow by this point. Despite the high abv, there is not much heat.
Mouthfeel- Though not thick, there is a stickiness to the mouthfeel as carbonation is virtually nonexistent.
Overall - The overwhelming black licorice is a burdensome, but I can still appreciate this one.

Time has treated this well. Looks murky with not much of a head - nothing surprising for the style and age. Armoa carries lots of toffee, leather, cedarwood cigar box, some plum notes, sweetness and an apple note from brandy, still a bit of hops, and a fait note of carboard oxidization. Flavors follow, smooth without being syrupy. Alcohol is well integrated. Really nice warming sipper.

Bottle shared by Justin.
Pours a light clear amber color, with no head or lacing.
This one smells kind of funky and oxidized. Honestly- kind of like cheerios and farts. As it warms that smell goes away a bit, still a bit grainy, but aromas of brandy, caramel, and toffee come out. There we go.
I still do get a bit of that cheerio flavor that might be due to oxidation (it's a 3 year old bottle), but beyond that, there's some brandy, caramel, toffee, oak, and astringent, slightly tannic oak and alcohol flavor. There's a lot of flavor on the front end, but unfortunately it's not very complex at the end of each sip, it kind of falls a bit flat. Luckily it still tastes pretty good.
This has a fairly light body for a BA barleywine, a little thin, with a small amount of carbonation, and the mouthfeel is a bit syrupy and sweet.
Very interesting to try this, it seems to be past its prime, or least not handled particularly well, but it's still got vestiges of a great BA barleywine.
