Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

After spending 4 years in Brandy barrels it became time to unleash the dark monster within. Thick toffee aromatics exude with dense layers of fig, molasses, caramel, and a medley of dark fruits. Sweet flavors of toffee and caramel mingle with the warming spice of vanilla, sherry-like notes, and brandy barrel oak tannin. When served above 55 degrees Fahrenheit (highly recommended) more dark fruits like plum, date, raisin, and fig are further revealed. Our CEO/Founder Mike Hinkley has enjoyed pairing this Brandy Barrel Aged Barleywine with a big stuffed “Shaggy” dog that came from the local fair carnies and therefore we now have “Sleepin' with Shaggy”.

Bottle shared by Justin.

Pours a light clear amber color, with no head or lacing.

This one smells kind of funky and oxidized. Honestly- kind of like cheerios and farts. As it warms that smell goes away a bit, still a bit grainy, but aromas of brandy, caramel, and toffee come out. There we go.

I still do get a bit of that cheerio flavor that might be due to oxidation (it's a 3 year old bottle), but beyond that, there's some brandy, caramel, toffee, oak, and astringent, slightly tannic oak and alcohol flavor. There's a lot of flavor on the front end, but unfortunately it's not very complex at the end of each sip, it kind of falls a bit flat. Luckily it still tastes pretty good.

This has a fairly light body for a BA barleywine, a little thin, with a small amount of carbonation, and the mouthfeel is a bit syrupy and sweet.

Very interesting to try this, it seems to be past its prime, or least not handled particularly well, but it's still got vestiges of a great BA barleywine.

Pour is dark brown with red edges and bubbly beige head. Nose is strong whiskey and wood, light sweet berry malt. Taste is heavy wood, light vanilla and whiskey. A bit of malt balance but the malt profile takes a back seat. Chocolate, a hint chalky, faint malt sweetness. Body is thick, strong carbonation to balance a big body.

Pours deep dark brown along with a thick tan head that settles respectably to the surface leaving a nice lacing with active carbonation feeding the edge of the glass. Complex aroma- boozy candied fruits, cherry, chocolate toffee with some roast elements, sweeter caramel and brandy notes on top. The flavors follows suit in addition to some chocolate caramel toffee with roasted bitterness, booze, and sweet barrel notes floating on top, lots of wood, drying out the finish. Thick, chewy palate. Overall, a really nice barleywine and a surprise for me coming from a hop-forward brewery.
