From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on January 25, 2014

It has a gorgeous dark brown pour with hints of red up to the light and a humongous lingering fluffy, tan head.

This is an aroma like nothing else. Spices explode on my nose including clove, ginger, nutmeg, coriander, juniper, allspice, and peppers. There is also a vibrant dark fruit character.

Medium body.

The flavor is more toned down than the nose but those unique spices do break out on my palate along with something like turmeric. Mildly bitter at the en but the spices hold vigil over everything else.

Only Okay by previous raters? I feel it is better than OK. (628 characters)

A: Huge thick tan head. Hold well and leaves alot of lacing down the side. Almost black in color. Unfortunately this is the best part about the beer.

S: Lots of yeast. Slight funk.

T: Typical saison with a bit of currant, which is slightly strange. Large head at times give a bit of an off putting taste to sips.

F: Highly carbonated and a thin bodied.

O: Disappointing considering what these two breweries typically produce. OK, but far from special. (459 characters)

A thick, fat tan head rests on top of a heavy black brew. It's between a finger and a half and two fingers high and sturdy. It leaves strong, creamy lacing in some pretty heavy patching.
This beer is one of the more interesting ones I've ever smelled or tasted. It's got an extremely distinct note of mint basil with piney hops and a touch of herb. The malt shows a touch of roast underneath. The basil being part of it, there's a hint of something like kitchen spicing mingling with a certain earthy nature as well.
Friendship has a medium body, and it's creamy with a crisp nip. It fills the mouth a bit, with an even creamier feel developing with the strong carbonation, which also makes it crisper even as it flows very cleanly and softly. (743 characters)

A: Very dark (black), but clear. Very nice thick dense head.
S: Dark roasted malt, some fresh/green hoparoma and yeasty phenolics. Doesn't have the typical saison-aroma though.
T: Mainly dark-roast, nice maltiness. Has more of a stout-taste than saison.
M: Very dry, highly carbonated.
O: More a hoppy belgian stout, than a (black) saison. Doesn't have the yeast character/finesses of a great Saison (like the St. Feuillien). (429 characters)

Picked his one up at Sun Devil Liqours in Mesa, poured from a 12 oz bottle to a Ruination pint glass. I love Green Flash! This one was bottles 8/12/2012 so it's been sitting for just a little over a year.

A - 3.75 - Black beer with a ton of tan head that never goes away, leaves a nice lacing on the glass. Bottle has some kind of shield on a light blue label.

S - 3.75 - Some roasty malts, coffee, with a nice spicy and strong black pepper smell to it.

T - 4.00 - Black pepper, smoke, roasted malts, some coffee. Probably some other spices in there that I'm missing. It's actually a little spicy if you let it sit in your mouth. Hop bitterness definitely present. What an interesting beer! I don't think I've ever had anything like this before.

M - 3.75 - Medium mouth feel, spicy. Leaves a roasted black pepper aftertaste. Alc is covered.

O - 3.75 - Weird beer, but good. I think it may have gotten better sitting on the shelf for a year. I would definitely drink it again, especially to show my friends. It's so much different from anything else. (1,059 characters)

A: Served in a tulip glass from a bottle. Inky black with a tremendous tan head. Head slow to dissipate.

S: Some barn-yardy smells. Spicy on the nose as would be typical for a saison. Lemon grass.

T: Up front there is a subtle citrus that slowly washes over the tounge. Finishes dry with a slight tobacco/roast character that lingers.

M: Light body and dry finish. Highly carbonated as one would expect.

O: Not a bad beer. I would consider this more of a novelty than a stellar example of a saison. (505 characters)

Tap: Poured a deep black color ale with a small brown foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma of light roasted malt with some rustic malt notes. Taste is also dominated by rustic malt with light roasted malt notes and some light funky notes. Body is about average with medium carbonation. Interesting experiment but not necessarily something I would seek on a regular basis. (388 characters)

Had at the Jamison pourhouse.
Came out a rich cola color. A beige head sits on top. Nicely carb'd.
Aroma finds sutle roasted malts and hints of possibly minted hops.
Taste is similar to the nose with a nice roasted malt component and somthing minty or herbal. perhaps they're the hops.
Drinks alittle bitter and dry yet sweet too.
A nice beer thats well balanced between malts spices and hops. (394 characters)

A- Pours black as night with a nice, frothy tan head.

S- Definitely a bit of roasted malt, but the citrus and yeasty notes typical of a saison really dominate the nose.

T- Very interesting. Quite bitter actually from the malt. Suggestions of bitter chocolate or coffee. A little bit of hop bitterness as well. Rounds out with some mild sweetness on the back end.

M- Medium to heavy bodied. Hardly any carbonation after it was poured.

O- Not bad. Very different and frankly a little over hyped. I was expecting great and got good. Would I drink it again? Probably if its aged a little longer to mellow out some of this bitterness.

Serving type- 12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Thanks for reading. (705 characters)

Pours a dark black with a decent head and good lacing. Aroma has spices coming through. This black Saison achieves what several others have struggled - the malts and spices complement each other. Sips seem to stack somewhat with a mint flavor coming through a bit later. Quality brew. (284 characters)

Pours black with light tan head in tulip glass.

Smell is mint, spices and malt. This is a strange smelling brew. Frankly, it smells like toothpaste.

Taste is sweet malts, spices, mint and mild bitterness in the finish.

Mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation.

Overall this was o.k. Too overpowered by the spices. (329 characters)

Taste & mouthfeel : locorice nd roasted malty flavors, leading to dry bitter finish.
Drinkability : a good beer in the style Saison (near Stout) (315 characters)
