Bomber bottle, Best before 7/21/14 etched onto the bottle

Pours darn near black, supporting a lasting medium mocha head. Leaving nice ringed and scattered high lacing.

Nose is all about the citrus, oranges and grapefruits, nice

Flavorful, citric, hoppy with dark malts. Fine stuff. Hops keep flowing in wave after wave, continuing citric notes, more and more orange on the palate. Perhaps a bit thin mouth feel wise. But its a minor point, as this is super tasty, and west coast hop forward goodness. Highly enjoyable and a must try.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: More brown than black, with thick, frothy, mocha head.

Smell: Citrus, char, chocolate, chalk and pine.

Taste: Somewhat fruity malts with lots of grapefruit and pine hops. Chocolate, coffee and charred meat all come into play as well. Finish is fairly bitter with herbal & spicy notes, pine and roasted malts all adding to the sharp finish. Despite all the flavors and the bitter finish, the taste profile is subtler than expected.

Feel: Moderately low carbonation with a creamy body that is slightly thinner than hoped for. Dry finish but some slight chalkiness.

Overall: Nice Black Ale that I would certainly have again, but while the breadth of flavors is impressive, some others examples of the style have greater depth.

Light black in color and it will allow some like to make it through if held up to light. Easily an inch thick tightly knit light beige colored head. Brussels lacing. Wonderful aroma of piney hops and dark malt. The hop taste actually seems pretty tame compared to what I'm getting from the aroma. This is still fairly bitter with piney hops, but that dark malt backbone is very apparent. Mouth is a bit thinner than I would have imagined. The flip side of course is that it's not as filling as a typical IPA at that ABV.

Poured from a 22 oz. bottle into a Surly Darkness chalice. Bottle says best by 07/21/14.

Appearance: Pours a deep brownish black with a hint of ruby. Moderate amount of bubbles and a huge four finger light tan head that slowly fades into a thinner creamy layer. Leaves a lot of lacing.

Smell: An earthy, fruity, and spicy hop forward aroma with good hints of pine, citrus, and dark malt. Big upfront mix of hops with hints of spicy pine resin and some earthy grass. Citrus hop hints of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, pineapple, and tangerine. Dark malts with hints of burnt toast, chocolate, coffee, biscuit, grains, burnt caramel, oats, and yeast. Definitely leans towards the hoppier side. A pretty good aroma.

Taste: Like it smells, a spicy, earthy, and fruity hop forward taste with notes of pine, citrus fruit, and dark malt. Upfront mix of earthy, herbal, floral, and citrus hops. Spicy and dank notes of pine resin. Earthy grass. Juicy citrus fruit notes of grapefruit, orange peel, lemon, tangerine, and pineapple. Hops are pretty oily with a drying bitterness. Dark malts with notes of chocolate, burnt toast, biscuit, coffee, grains, caramel, yeast, and oats. A pretty good ripe taste.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied with a moderate amount of carbonation. Juicy, spicy, oily, sticky, and pretty drying.

Overall: A pretty solid take on a Black IPA. Pretty hop forward with a nice juicy and oily bitterness. The dark malt presence is good as well.

Draft pour at Revolution Ale House, Charlotte NC.

This has proven to be one of my least favorite styles, but this brew is better than most. Appearance is great, black beer with thick off-white creamy head and lacing. The nose is straight up hops, but the taste does have some malt supporting the hops. Oily mouthfeel. Very good beer.

Raw hop character in a black IPA format, the appearance is cola brown with ruby highlights, big tan head forms thick, rocky texture. Aroma has pungent citrus peel and dark roasted malt layers combined into one, goes great with food. But my ideal IPA is citrus fruit grassy and clean the muddled alpha acids with dark roasts just don't work as well as your typical IPA without the dark roasted malts. Flavors have the dark chocolate notes with herbal, herbaceous dank weed, and grapefruit peel bitterness heavy in the backend finishes dry without much finesse. It's just hops and dark bitter roasted malt without much poetry between the two, gimme a porter or an hoppy IPA in place of the hybrid any day. Mouthfeel is resinous with hop oils it even makes your nares burn with the combination. Overall I can't wait to try something more approachable in the Black IPA department, this is good but I know there could be better versions out there.

Had on-tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA

Appearance - Black in color, served to me with a half finger, light tan head. Decent retention, leaving a fair layer of microbubbles covering the surface. Leaves fair lacing with good stick.

Smell - Pungeunt hop oil aroma. Citrus and pine. Lesser notes of roasted malt; caramel and coffee.

Taste - Follows the nose. Hop forward flavor; more citrus than pine resin. Grapefruit pith. Light to moderate roasted malt character, touching on caramel, cocoa and lesser coffee notes.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with a healthy amount of carbonation. Slight creaminess. Goes down with fair ease. Semi-dry finish.

Overall - Classic West Coast hop profile. It's quite similar, in fact, to their West Coast IPA except with the addition of roasted malt, and while I'd prefer a stronger roast malt presence, that's not typical of the style. What's there is solid. One I'd certainly give another go with, especially if Green Flash decides to bottle this in the future.

Appearance:
Truth in advertisement here... Pitch black body allows absolutely no light through its' walls. Beautiful, thick beige head with great retention and plenty of lacing.

Aroma:
Nice, roasted malts and coffee and pine hops. Notes of pistachios and pepper can also be found. I wish it were a bit more potent however.

Taste:
Right away, plenty of roasted character encapsulates a potent, bitter bite. Gobs of pine, little bit of coffee. Nutty aftertaste. No booziness. Enjoyable.

Mouthfeel:
Could be smoother, if I'm honest, but it doesn't ruin the experience. Fairly thick body and lightly carbonation. Clean finish but a bit dry.

Overall:
Very enjoyable beer here. Easy to drink considering its bite. Worth consideration!

The Black IPA from Green Flash is a good easy drinking Black IPA. The beer poured a nearly opaque with thick white head that left a very nice lace. The scent and taste carry a roast and pine flare. The mouthfeel was medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a good Black IPA.
