The Black IPA from Green Flash is a good easy drinking Black IPA. The beer poured a nearly opaque with thick white head that left a very nice lace. The scent and taste carry a roast and pine flare. The mouthfeel was medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a good Black IPA.

Appearance: Pours like a stout, with a great bubble show, though the liquid winds up being more of a root beer brown color; impressive head, nice retention and plenty of lacing

Smell: Burnt toast and ashy, with the hops bringing piney tones

Taste: The piney tones leap to the forefront, but the burnt toast and ashy flavor builds through the middle; the hops recover their prominence, after the swallow, though the malt elements linger in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I am drinking this beer about 10 days after the best by date so the hop flavors are not likely what the brewer intended; still, I find the malts here just a bit too charred and, when compared to the Lagunitas NightTime I had just a few days ago, this beer comes up short

Draft pour at Revolution Ale House, Charlotte NC.

This has proven to be one of my least favorite styles, but this brew is better than most. Appearance is great, black beer with thick off-white creamy head and lacing. The nose is straight up hops, but the taste does have some malt supporting the hops. Oily mouthfeel. Very good beer.

A - Pours pitch black is a light tan head. Good lacing.

S - Hop aroma actually over powers alot of the darker malts. Blind folded I may not be able to tell it's a black IPA. The roasted character is definitely present though. Pretty impressive.

T/M - More like the nose, pine and citrus hop character up front, with a roasty-coffee like finish. Usually I find these characters to clash, but it's pretty well done in this beer.
Medium to full bodied, which is much appreciated. There's enough residual sugar to balance out some of the harsh roast and bitterness.

O - Still not a style I regularly grab for, but this was a great attempt.

Roasty, with fruity specialty malt character. Floral hop flavor, with an almost buttery toffee backbone. The finish is lightly charred and fairly bitter. Citrusy hops accent the buttery sweetness well. It's a bit of an odd combo. Roast overwhelms hops.

Generally not a huge fan of black IPAs, but this is a home run. Fruity, malty, hoppy... Jesus, what more could you want. Green Flash Black IPA converted me into a believer. A well-balanced attack on the senses. Love it. (Granted, it's a sipping beer -- you really don't want to have more than one or, well, two.)

22oz bottle, Best By 7/21/14, so we're getting close, and I'm wishing I had bought and drank this sooner...
L - tall, frothy tan head sits atop a cola-like, nearly black ale. Excellent head retention and sticky lacing
S - dank pine and citric hops, roasted malt, faint chocolate
T - black and bitter with roasted barley, baker's chocolate, pine, grapefruit rind, earth, caramel
F - resinous and drying, sticky, fuller body, nice carbonation
O - nice black IPA. I'd try it again if I could get it on tap or get a fresher bottle. Regardless, it's still really solid.

Picked up a bomber from BevMo at the end of March for $5.99. Best by 7/21/14.

Beer poured dark brown with a nice off white head that is leaving lacing behind.

Nose is fresh citrus hops and hints of roasted malts.

Taste has hints of the sweet caramel malts along with roasted black malts. Citrus and pine come on full force and leave a nice lingering hop bitter finish.

Mouthfeel is pretty creamy for the style which i do not mind.

Overall this is one tasty brew; definitely give it a shot if you come across it!

Poured into pint glass from bomber

A-Nice and dark with a deep amber/mahogany tint. Thick head with nice, fine lacing at first dissipating partially over a few minutes.

S-Citrus, grassy with some of the darker notes as well, maybe some of the roastiness coming through here.

T-Fits the smell. Nice roastiness followed by some lingering citrus and bitterness. Really enjoyable.

M-A good weight to it without being too heavy/syrupy. Coats nicely.

O-Not as complex on the nose as some, but very enjoyable example of black IPA that isn't too far on either end of the malt/hop spectrum. Would buy again.

A: Chesnut brown almost black with a fluffy tan head and heavy lacing.

S: Roasted malts and piney hops.

T: Toasted bread. Pine cones. Grapefruit, and a touch of coffee.

M: Medium body and average carbonation with a crisp dry finish.

O: Easy drinking basic black IPA.

overall a solid black ipa.

A thick tan head atop a dark brown and cherry red brew. Has an aroma of subtle, earthy hops that are superseded by a wallop of roasted malts. Tastes of spent grain, blackcurrant, caramel and oily hops. Medium bodied, well-balanced and smooth, but falls slightly short in the flavor category.

22oz bottle into my FW Snifter glass
Notes from 05/11/14

A: Pours thin and dark coffee in appearance which darkens to a motor oil black once collected in the glass. Massive dark khaki billow with extreme hang time here. I have to give it to the great head one achieves from a Green Flash beer. A few broken lines of crusty stick are left behind in the shape of some rolling hills.

S: Sticky pine needles by the bundle with a pinch of dank herbal weediness on it. Not particularly citrusy but the nose is still plenty hoppy. I also get a fair amount of toasted biscuit, scorched caramels, and a waft of charcoal. Smells fairly nice and definitely more on the earthy pine side with some hints of dark roast.

T: Toasted biscuit is prominent. Has lots of black biscuit notes followed by sappy resinous pine hops and dank herbs. There is some dark caramel sweetness going on and flashes of citrus zest but the finish brings in a char roast with whisps of coffee and chocolate malts. Even some faint licorice root character there. The beer has a moderate to upper level of bitterness but it is not acridly raw on the palate in combination with the roast which I like. Alcohol is really well hidden throughout. Some good flavors but not very innovative to the style.

M: Moderate body and even a step on the lighter side. Perfect level of carb to bring in some spritzy feel. Resinous amount of hops with a nice bittering sensation. Dry at the finish with clean balance overall.

D: Probably the least of my favorite in the Odyssey lineup. A well made brew no doubt but I guess I just expect better from Green Flash. This comes off a little uninpsired and a bit thrown together to me. Any notes of bright citrusy hops here are washed out by the darker roast. There are much better offerings of the style available. I just wish they would have made a black West Coast IPA. Seems like a no brainer to me.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a huge, creamy, off white, long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: A very subtle aroma of hops, with a slightly citrusy quality as well.

T: Tasted of grassy hops (not my favorite), a mild citrus element, sweet malt, and a hint of coffee as well. The flavor here definitely has its charms, but it's a bit on the uneven side, mainly due to the addition of grassy hops, which become more and more prevalent the more you drink.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a prickly finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An unbalanced beer. Certainly has its charms, but there was something left to be desired.

A: Pours a nearly opaque black with a thick khaki head.

S: Aromas of herbs, pine, lemon, lime, grapefruit, blood orange, caramel, cream, and dark chocolate fill the nose.

T: Notes of herbs, pine, cedar, juniper berry, lemon, lime, grapefruit, blood orange, cream, caramel, and dark chocolate wash across the palate. The finish is bitter with intense herb, lemon, pine, cedar, and grapefruit notes backed by subtle flavors of caramel and cream.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth, and slightly slick. Carbonation is crisp, firm, and prickly. Easy to drink for the style.

O: A rock solid black ale. I would have no difficulty recommending this beer to any fan of hoppy ales.

Light black in color and it will allow some like to make it through if held up to light. Easily an inch thick tightly knit light beige colored head. Brussels lacing. Wonderful aroma of piney hops and dark malt. The hop taste actually seems pretty tame compared to what I'm getting from the aroma. This is still fairly bitter with piney hops, but that dark malt backbone is very apparent. Mouth is a bit thinner than I would have imagined. The flip side of course is that it's not as filling as a typical IPA at that ABV.

On draft at City Beer Store, San Francisco.
Ruby black with steady tan film.
Ash, greasy orange rind, and blackberry nose.
Cocoa nibs, char and black currant then citrus rind, lemon balm, herb and mint hops.
Lemon zest finish and long roasty bitterness.
Medium, oily, clingy.

Deep and serious BIPA. Makes 21A Back in Black – which is not a bad beer – drink like Grape Fanta. Nuanced and technically superior.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on May 10, 2014.

The pour is dark brown with some mahogany hues lighting up the edges of the glass. A full, foamy being head that settles some but leaves a lot of lacing.

Aroma of floral and grassy hop notes with the dark, sweet malts playing up in the background.

The body is medium to bold and quite satisfying.

All those hops jump out in the flavor to overtake my taste buds while the dark, sweet, licorice malts remain low but balanced. Lingering bitterness at the finish. A good hoppy black IPA.

S - Roasted dark grains and coffee

T - A burst of espresso coffee followed by a bitter hoppy grapefruit burst. Well balanced, and tasty!

M - Creamy and medium bodied. Well carbonated.

O - An awesome black IPA. What can I say..these guys know how to brew some amazing beer. Well done!

Pours black with a one finger tan head, with good retention and lacing. The aroma has grapefruit, pine, and some roasted malt.

The taste is more subdued than the aroma with grapefruit, citrus zest, roasted malt, pine, and some earthiness. More bitter than sweet, but has pretty good balance. I wish this beer had a more bold taste. the bottle is not old, it states Best by 07/21/14, so it is not old.

Light to medium bodied with modest carbonation for the style. Not much aftertaste. A decent beer, but not as good as the best in the class.

Dark brown, almost black and poured a tasty 2 finger head.

Very piney, some black licorice, and heavy hops dominate overall aroma.

Taste is more IPA than stout, a fine showing. This is definitely a hop dominant black IPA, and I'm not complaining. Just enough malt to balance the bitterness from the piney hops.

Mouthfeel is rather bitter, but not unpleasant.

Overall a very hoppy and delicious, but somewhat stouty, black IPA.

Gainesville House of Beer

A - nice black pour, not like a stout, but more like a dark dark brown ale. Creamy two fingers of cream/tan head.

S - Nice hoppy nose. Has a great bitterness Some maltiness to it too.

T - love it. Balance of earthy/grassy hops and sweet malt at the very end. Bitterness and roasty malts are in perfect combination.

M - medium body. Drinkable as all get out. Pours down the throat in a dangerously easy fashion.

O - impressed to say the least. Recommend any day. Cheers Green Flash!

Poured from the bottle a dark brown-black color with two fingers of beige head. Wet, sticky lacing left behind.

The aroma was hoppier than expected with pine, fresh-cut grass and orange along with light roasted caramel malts and a whiff of vanilla.

The taste, as now expected, opened with a hoppy bite of pine and grassy hops followed by light roasted caramel malts for balance. Hoppy bitterness lingers thru the finish.

Medium bodied and dry with a fairly sharp carbonation.

This is probably the best Black IPA I've ever had. Hop-forward and delicious. Nice job, Green Flash!

Poured from a 22oz bottle with a best by date 7/21/14; into a tulip.
Appearance - pours incredibly black, but against the light shows a hint of deep crimson. Huge, foamy mocha head that leaves sticky and creamy lacing!
Smell - an excellent blend of sweet malts and citrus hops!
Taste - full of flavors, primarily gourmet coffee, grapefruit and mango!
Feel - complex, aggressive, flavorful, just fantastic! Bitter hops, dark coffee, medium body.
Overall - love the style, so I'm not surprised that I like this so much, but This was better than expected!

A very balanced and full flavored black IPA with a creamy mouthfeel but a nicely lingering bitter pine finish. It really held up nicely for several days in the growler and I loved the combo of bitter pine and toasty malt on the finish. A very solid effort.
