Pours cola brown to make up a very dark body, small off white cap of foam. Retention is just okay with a solid sheet of lacing.

Malty, chocolate and toasted bread with a huge profile of fruitiness from Green Flash house yeast. Malt masks alot of the hops leaving some faint citrus and pine to battle with the pungent fruit esters and malt.

Bready malt, some toffee and cocoa but overall very charred and buttery. The hops are a tickling pine with pronounced bitterness, very little complexity of depth. Alcohol is present but complementary to the bitterness.

Medium bodied with adequate carbonation. Slick and thin over the palate which makes it fairly drinkable. The higher soapy bitterness gives it a pleasant drying.

Not a great black IPA, low hop presence and overly charred malt. Decent enough. The fruity esters from the yeast are also bothersome. I prefer a bold citrus hop profile to stand out from the dark malt, here is just blends and falls flat. See FW Wookey Jack, Deschutes Hop in the Dark and Knee Deep Midnight Hoppiness for better representations.

A- Pours a near black with a foamy khaki head of 2 fingers. Lighter accents around the edges.

S- Straight up pine on this one. Some roasted notes come in late

T- Good amount of piney hops again. Not overly complex. Slightly bitter.

M- Dry, mid body, clean finish. Soft on the pallet.

O- nothing special here. Flavor was a bit muddled and refrained.

Had this on tap in Arlington, VA. Pours a nice golden color with minimal carbonation at the head. Smells of pine and grapefruit. There's not much there in terms of the taste. You have the pines and grapefruit, but it's not as clean and there is no hoppy bite on the back end.

Quite beautiful coffee-black brew in the Duvel tulip with a creamy off-white head. Rather thin body. Frothy and mouth-filling. Modest hoppy scent. A little bit of sweetness gives this a mellow note to start, but it's short-lived.

Interesting herbal flavor. Bitter with leafy hops, something like arugula. Very bitter aftertaste compromises the pleasure. A lot of scorched malt flavor. From the 22 oz bottle purchased at Olive Tree Market in Ocean Beach.

22oz bottle $6.99. Looks like a stout, maybe a bit brown at the edges. Aroma is roasted malts and oranges. Flavor is exactly the same with maybe a touch of chocolate in there. Personally I find this style one that us rarely executed well and this is no exception. I would not purchase this again, it would be much better to save a buck and buy a Firestone Walker Wookey Jack.

Pours black with a one finger tan head, with good retention and lacing. The aroma has grapefruit, pine, and some roasted malt.

The taste is more subdued than the aroma with grapefruit, citrus zest, roasted malt, pine, and some earthiness. More bitter than sweet, but has pretty good balance. I wish this beer had a more bold taste. the bottle is not old, it states Best by 07/21/14, so it is not old.

Light to medium bodied with modest carbonation for the style. Not much aftertaste. A decent beer, but not as good as the best in the class.

A - Pours black but not pitch black with thin, light tan head.

S - Overwhelmingly hoppy. This is not a negative, but I was expecting roasty or malty notes to add complexity.

T - Intense hops upfront. Again, not as roasty as I expect from a black IPA. Clean finish with pleasant bitterness.

M - Medium body and carbonation.

O - A solid beer, but the only thing that makes this a "black IPA" is the color (and slightly fuller mouthfeel). In other words, if I was blindfolded, I would think it was a full-bodied "standard" IPA.

pours black, minimal head on a medium pour. looks like iced coffee pouring out. aromas of hops very light, with some smoke(?) in the background. taste is very bitter, much more pronounced than the smell, with a gritty hop bitterness that is very piney and resin-y. maybe a little coffee in the flavor also? for the 7.2% abv, this is extremely bitter. not a great brew, but drinkable once to try. I wouldn't purchase this one again. I suppose some like this this, but i'm not a fan.... definitely would prefer a Wookey Jack over this.

A thick tan head atop a dark brown and cherry red brew. Has an aroma of subtle, earthy hops that are superseded by a wallop of roasted malts. Tastes of spent grain, blackcurrant, caramel and oily hops. Medium bodied, well-balanced and smooth, but falls slightly short in the flavor category.

I thought this beer way too bitter for the style, assuming that it is a black IPA and not a double.
The bitterness takes away from an already weak flavor.
The color was deep cinnamon brown with a tall beige head.
In the aroma were light hints of citrus and roasted malts.
The taste was weak and almost watery thin with some hints of hops malts and cocoa.
The mouthfeel was dry and bitter on the palate.
Green Flash is a top ten brewery for me no doubt about it, this one just didn't work.

A: Poured from a bottle to a pint glass. Had a dark brown color and a thick, opaque consistency. There was a huge, creamy, off white, long-lasting head. Excellent lacing.

S: A very subtle aroma of hops, with a slightly citrusy quality as well.

T: Tasted of grassy hops (not my favorite), a mild citrus element, sweet malt, and a hint of coffee as well. The flavor here definitely has its charms, but it's a bit on the uneven side, mainly due to the addition of grassy hops, which become more and more prevalent the more you drink.

M: A good amount of carbonation with a prickly finish. Medium-bodied.

O: An unbalanced beer. Certainly has its charms, but there was something left to be desired.

Type: 22-oz. glass
Glass: Lagunitas mason jar
From: VONS in Normal Heights (San Diego), Calif.
Price: $5.99 (w/ VONS card)
Purchased: Feb. 16, 2014
Consumed: Feb. 16, 2014
Misc.: Best by July 21, 2014

Poured a very dark mahogany, almost pitch black color with four fingers of frothy dark khaki tan head. Tons of foamy layered lacing along the sides of the glass. Thick, foamy retention all the way down.

Smelled floral hops, citrus hops - grapefruit, tangerine & light lime, , wet Cascade hops, caramel, honey, some unknown spices, light cocoa, chocolate and toffee.

Tasted a lot different than I thought it would. Lots of buttery notes, which I’m not a fan of. All the hops that I got in the smell were harder to find in the taste. Some bitter grapefruit notes in there, but not nearly as strong. Roasty, chocolate, caramel, toffee and cocoa nibs.

Medium body. Creamy-to-sticky texture. Lively carbonation. Long, buttery, slightly bitter finish.

I had high hopes for this beer and it really on delivered for the aroma and smell. I wouldn’t have it again

A: Chesnut brown almost black with a fluffy tan head and heavy lacing.

S: Roasted malts and piney hops.

T: Toasted bread. Pine cones. Grapefruit, and a touch of coffee.

M: Medium body and average carbonation with a crisp dry finish.

O: Easy drinking basic black IPA.

22oz bottle into my FW Snifter glass
Notes from 05/11/14

A: Pours thin and dark coffee in appearance which darkens to a motor oil black once collected in the glass. Massive dark khaki billow with extreme hang time here. I have to give it to the great head one achieves from a Green Flash beer. A few broken lines of crusty stick are left behind in the shape of some rolling hills.

S: Sticky pine needles by the bundle with a pinch of dank herbal weediness on it. Not particularly citrusy but the nose is still plenty hoppy. I also get a fair amount of toasted biscuit, scorched caramels, and a waft of charcoal. Smells fairly nice and definitely more on the earthy pine side with some hints of dark roast.

T: Toasted biscuit is prominent. Has lots of black biscuit notes followed by sappy resinous pine hops and dank herbs. There is some dark caramel sweetness going on and flashes of citrus zest but the finish brings in a char roast with whisps of coffee and chocolate malts. Even some faint licorice root character there. The beer has a moderate to upper level of bitterness but it is not acridly raw on the palate in combination with the roast which I like. Alcohol is really well hidden throughout. Some good flavors but not very innovative to the style.

M: Moderate body and even a step on the lighter side. Perfect level of carb to bring in some spritzy feel. Resinous amount of hops with a nice bittering sensation. Dry at the finish with clean balance overall.

D: Probably the least of my favorite in the Odyssey lineup. A well made brew no doubt but I guess I just expect better from Green Flash. This comes off a little uninpsired and a bit thrown together to me. Any notes of bright citrusy hops here are washed out by the darker roast. There are much better offerings of the style available. I just wish they would have made a black West Coast IPA. Seems like a no brainer to me.

Big bottle picked up at the COOP earlier this week... Pours with a long lasting sorta meringue like dark tan head... the brew is pretty much black.

Piney hops and expected light mix of coffee and dark malt... Coffee notes mix better with the spruce hops with warmth.

Flavor has the standard dark malt with some light toasty malt... hops show as light grapefruit and lesser pine. Surprisingly balanced for a Black IPA...

Body is pretty standard.

On tap at Yard House in Northridge, CA.

Pours a clear super dark crimson-brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy rings of lace line the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, citrus zest, and slight cocoa. Taste is much the same with a citrus zest flavor on the finish. There is a medium amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good beer with more of an emphasis on hoppy versus roasty aromas and flavors.

look: 4.25 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75

Appearance: Pours like a stout, with a great bubble show, though the liquid winds up being more of a root beer brown color; impressive head, nice retention and plenty of lacing

Smell: Burnt toast and ashy, with the hops bringing piney tones

Taste: The piney tones leap to the forefront, but the burnt toast and ashy flavor builds through the middle; the hops recover their prominence, after the swallow, though the malt elements linger in the aftertaste

Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Overall: I am drinking this beer about 10 days after the best by date so the hop flavors are not likely what the brewer intended; still, I find the malts here just a bit too charred and, when compared to the Lagunitas NightTime I had just a few days ago, this beer comes up short

Pours chestnut/mahogany with a thumb of tan head. Insane lacing & head retention

S: Pineyness, roastyness

T: Follows the nose, dryness, leafy hops & orange peel up front. More roastyness & dryness as this warms, plus grapefruit, leafy hops. Finishes slightly astringent, with grapefruit & pineyness

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, skews hoppy

Drinks easy, a nice Black IPA; not the best but one I might revisit

Roasty, with fruity specialty malt character. Floral hop flavor, with an almost buttery toffee backbone. The finish is lightly charred and fairly bitter. Citrusy hops accent the buttery sweetness well. It's a bit of an odd combo. Roast overwhelms hops.

Pours pitch black and opaque with a one finger beige head that has good retention, slowly fading into a lasting ring.  Streaks of splotchy lacing left behind.

The aroma has a subtle toasted malt presence along with a nice dank, floral hop character.  Smells similar to a regular west coast ipa but with a touch of robust malt.  Very floral, citrus-y and tropical smelling with resinous, grassy pine and dark roast.  Hints of grapefruit, orange peel and pineapple followed by grass, pine sap, oatmeal, toast, dark fruit and lightly roasted coffee bean.

Unfortunately, it's not as complex as the nose suggests.  Lots of dry bitterness but this comes more from slightly acrid and roasted dark malt.  Tropical/citrus notes from the aroma aren't really showing up on the palate.  Sticky and resinous hops with grassy pine needle followed roasted chocolate malt, oatmeal, coffee bean and burnt toast.

First, an aside: BJCP should fix the naming of this category. The debate is long over, "IPA" sells!

Anyway, this one pours a mostly clear dark orange edged dark brown with billowing tan colored head. Big pillows of foam clinging to the glass, with a half inch of head staying for the remainder. Smell: pine, grapefruit peel, dried apricot, toffee note. Taste: sugary into roasty and caraway notes quickly overtaken by pine and grapefruit peel. It's over quickly. Nice example but not a standout for me. Best by 7/21/14.

22oz, In My Experience snifter

A: Pours a very deep brown color. Some reddish hues around the edges. Nice full finger of light tan head. Some sticky lacing is left on the glass.

S: Nice earthy pine hop aroma on the nose. Getting some of that common roast, from the darker malts. Toasted grain. Chocolate. Some black licorice.

T: Good amount of hop bitterness up front, and throughout the sip. As it warms, some of that roast and chocolate come into play more. Finish has lingering pine. Bitterness. Nicely done BIPA.

M: Medium bodied. Thinner than expected from the appearance.

22oz bottle, Best By 7/21/14, so we're getting close, and I'm wishing I had bought and drank this sooner...
L - tall, frothy tan head sits atop a cola-like, nearly black ale. Excellent head retention and sticky lacing
S - dank pine and citric hops, roasted malt, faint chocolate
T - black and bitter with roasted barley, baker's chocolate, pine, grapefruit rind, earth, caramel
F - resinous and drying, sticky, fuller body, nice carbonation
O - nice black IPA. I'd try it again if I could get it on tap or get a fresher bottle. Regardless, it's still really solid.

Draft pour at Revolution Ale House, Charlotte NC.

This has proven to be one of my least favorite styles, but this brew is better than most. Appearance is great, black beer with thick off-white creamy head and lacing. The nose is straight up hops, but the taste does have some malt supporting the hops. Oily mouthfeel. Very good beer.
