Had on-tap at Capitol Beer in Sacramento, CA

Appearance - Black in color, served to me with a half finger, light tan head. Decent retention, leaving a fair layer of microbubbles covering the surface. Leaves fair lacing with good stick.

Smell - Pungeunt hop oil aroma. Citrus and pine. Lesser notes of roasted malt; caramel and coffee.

Taste - Follows the nose. Hop forward flavor; more citrus than pine resin. Grapefruit pith. Light to moderate roasted malt character, touching on caramel, cocoa and lesser coffee notes.

Mouthfeel - Medium in body with a healthy amount of carbonation. Slight creaminess. Goes down with fair ease. Semi-dry finish.

Overall - Classic West Coast hop profile. It's quite similar, in fact, to their West Coast IPA except with the addition of roasted malt, and while I'd prefer a stronger roast malt presence, that's not typical of the style. What's there is solid. One I'd certainly give another go with, especially if Green Flash decides to bottle this in the future.

Bomber > Pint Glass

A - Pours a nice black/brown with two fingers of tan head, thick lacing.
S - Lovely inviting aroma, coffee notes, roasted malts and chocolate, a little bit of a roasted nuttiness then some nice fruit notes, grapefruit, white grape, lemon zest
T - Drinks more like a regular IPA, lots of grapefruit, pine, and white grape juice with some bitter coffee roasts in the back.
M - Palate is left with a substantial bitter bite and slight dryness
O - Very good Black IPA, the aroma is great, but the flavor dips down to more of just straight hop flavor, which is disappointing.

Very black with an off-white to tan head, ok lace, not bad looking.

Aroma and taste are very nice, but I would rate this more of a black ale (as listed) than a black IPA, as it seems more balanced than I think of a true IPA style beer (which would be heavily weighted towards hops). Bitterness is not lacking by any means, but really on the flavors I get more roasted, burnt, and toasted malts than anything particularly notable in hops.

Body is medium but drinkability is pretty high. Finish is smooth roastiness with a bitter tinge. Overall it's Green Flash, which is about all that needs to be said.

Had on tap in a pint glass.

Arrived with no head and a nearly opaque very dark brown.

Definite citrus aroma along with lots of roasted malt and cocoa. A very nice malt/hop balance and the roastiness was quite nice.

The flavor continued the great balance between malt and hop with toast, caramel, and coffee along with a hefty punch of citrus from the hops. A moderate bitterness lingered through a sticky finish.

Overall, a really good black IPA. There are so many different variations on this style but Green Flash has really nailed it with this one.

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: More brown than black, with thick, frothy, mocha head.

Smell: Citrus, char, chocolate, chalk and pine.

Taste: Somewhat fruity malts with lots of grapefruit and pine hops. Chocolate, coffee and charred meat all come into play as well. Finish is fairly bitter with herbal & spicy notes, pine and roasted malts all adding to the sharp finish. Despite all the flavors and the bitter finish, the taste profile is subtler than expected.

Feel: Moderately low carbonation with a creamy body that is slightly thinner than hoped for. Dry finish but some slight chalkiness.

Overall: Nice Black Ale that I would certainly have again, but while the breadth of flavors is impressive, some others examples of the style have greater depth.

Gainesville House of Beer

A - nice black pour, not like a stout, but more like a dark dark brown ale. Creamy two fingers of cream/tan head.

S - Nice hoppy nose. Has a great bitterness Some maltiness to it too.

T - love it. Balance of earthy/grassy hops and sweet malt at the very end. Bitterness and roasty malts are in perfect combination.

M - medium body. Drinkable as all get out. Pours down the throat in a dangerously easy fashion.

O - impressed to say the least. Recommend any day. Cheers Green Flash!

Light black in color and it will allow some like to make it through if held up to light. Easily an inch thick tightly knit light beige colored head. Brussels lacing. Wonderful aroma of piney hops and dark malt. The hop taste actually seems pretty tame compared to what I'm getting from the aroma. This is still fairly bitter with piney hops, but that dark malt backbone is very apparent. Mouth is a bit thinner than I would have imagined. The flip side of course is that it's not as filling as a typical IPA at that ABV.

Raw hop character in a black IPA format, the appearance is cola brown with ruby highlights, big tan head forms thick, rocky texture. Aroma has pungent citrus peel and dark roasted malt layers combined into one, goes great with food. But my ideal IPA is citrus fruit grassy and clean the muddled alpha acids with dark roasts just don't work as well as your typical IPA without the dark roasted malts. Flavors have the dark chocolate notes with herbal, herbaceous dank weed, and grapefruit peel bitterness heavy in the backend finishes dry without much finesse. It's just hops and dark bitter roasted malt without much poetry between the two, gimme a porter or an hoppy IPA in place of the hybrid any day. Mouthfeel is resinous with hop oils it even makes your nares burn with the combination. Overall I can't wait to try something more approachable in the Black IPA department, this is good but I know there could be better versions out there.

The Black IPA from Green Flash is a good easy drinking Black IPA. The beer poured a nearly opaque with thick white head that left a very nice lace. The scent and taste carry a roast and pine flare. The mouthfeel was medium in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a good Black IPA.

Pours a cola color with a slowly fading, sandstone head that leaves little chunks of lacing.

Smells of citrus and pine hops.

Tastes of a big wave of hops with a roasted malt backbone. Hops lead off with notes pine and citrus accompanied by moderate bitterness. Roasted malt comes in and adds depth. Cocoa, molasses, and a touch of coffee come through. Finishes with a lingering bitterness. This definitely leans towards the hops.

Mouthfeel is medium-full with a smooth amount of carbonation.

Overall, this is a great take on a black IPA and it is worth a try.

On-tap at Idle Hands, New York, NY

A: The beer is clear very dark red in color (black when viewed from afar). It poured with a thin beige head that consistently left a thin layer of bubbles covering the surface and some lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: Light to moderate aromas of citrusy hops are present in the nose.
T: The taste has a moderate to strong amount of bitterness. Flavors of dark roasted malts are most noticeable with underlying notes of citrus and pine resin hops in the finish
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp and smooth on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer is very interesting as it has a nice mix of citrusy and piney hops combined with hop bitterness. It's definitely a West Coast Black IPA.

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/21/2014. Pours crystal clear nearly opaque dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings aruound the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, orange zest, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big tangerine, pineapple, mango, orange zest, grapefruit, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, orange zest, cocoa, toast, light roast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of citrus/tropical hop flavors with light-moderate roasted malt balance; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice black IPA. All around good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

Pores a pretty much black body with one finger tan head and left lace patches. The aroma is mostly piney, citric hops with minor roasted malt notes in the background. Full bodied and slightly chewy, the hops are strong and this beer is more hoppy than malty, not that the balance is totally askew. The roasted malts are evident and there is a slight biscuit feeling along with sweetness, but mostly I get the strong hop presence in this beer. I really like this ale as I prefer black ipas that are hoppier than what is usual of style.

A: Pours a nearly opaque black with a thick khaki head.

S: Aromas of herbs, pine, lemon, lime, grapefruit, blood orange, caramel, cream, and dark chocolate fill the nose.

T: Notes of herbs, pine, cedar, juniper berry, lemon, lime, grapefruit, blood orange, cream, caramel, and dark chocolate wash across the palate. The finish is bitter with intense herb, lemon, pine, cedar, and grapefruit notes backed by subtle flavors of caramel and cream.

M: Medium-bodied, smooth, and slightly slick. Carbonation is crisp, firm, and prickly. Easy to drink for the style.

O: A rock solid black ale. I would have no difficulty recommending this beer to any fan of hoppy ales.

Truth in advertisement here... Pitch black body allows absolutely no light through its' walls. Beautiful, thick beige head with great retention and plenty of lacing.

Nice, roasted malts and coffee and pine hops. Notes of pistachios and pepper can also be found. I wish it were a bit more potent however.

Right away, plenty of roasted character encapsulates a potent, bitter bite. Gobs of pine, little bit of coffee. Nutty aftertaste. No booziness. Enjoyable.

Could be smoother, if I'm honest, but it doesn't ruin the experience. Fairly thick body and lightly carbonation. Clean finish but a bit dry.

Very enjoyable beer here. Easy to drink considering its bite. Worth consideration!

As a fan of black ipas and Green Flash, I was quite excited to see this on my store's shelves. It pours a deep black with a generous off-white head that gives way to a nice film but little lacing. The nose is a beautiful balance of citrus and pine hops and roasty coffee and caramel malt aromas. It sips quite light and very clean and crisp. I actually had hoped this would have a little more body to it. The flavor, while delicious, is not as good as the aroma. The hits with a very west coast hop bite, lots of citrus and pine. Then comes on with the roasted malts. The finish and aftertaste is coffee and bitter chocolate. There is a nice balance but I almost feel it could use just a touch more sweetness. It is definitely one if the hoppier black ipas that I have tried. Not my favorite black ipa or Green Flash offering but damn good.

Pours a dark black color with off white head and lacing. Good looking brew. Aroma is roasted and hoppy, almost minty.

In the taste, roasted malt with a bit of smoke to it and herbal, piney hops with mint and citrus. Interesting flavor. Medium bodied with a dry hop bite. Herbal, soothing, with some alpha acids working the orange zest impression.

Overall, a tasty black ipa with some unique flavor.

Surely black. Nice head mounting this beer. Crusty dry lace. Inch plus of tan foam.

Earthy citrus and pine. A little more going on than your usual grapefruit, spruce, and cocoa. Almost milder and more balanced than that. Rather earthy with coffee-like roast. Some herbal aromatics involved. The pine is a big-time contributor, but it has great restraint and character. Juicier than just pithy hops. Very nice.

Taste follows with more of that rounded hoppiness. Malts are all char and bitter coffee and not a lot of much else. Just enough to make it black, this is all about the hops. Moderate bitterness that cleans up in the finish. Alcohol isn't a problem, either. A little dextrinous. Has that good Green Flash grapefruit and pine combo with lots of C-hops. Great balance.

Feels scruffy, likable, bitter. Carbonated excitingly. Body is supple beneath all of these bubbles.

Two thumbs up. A black IPA that I can enjoy again.

A very balanced and full flavored black IPA with a creamy mouthfeel but a nicely lingering bitter pine finish. It really held up nicely for several days in the growler and I loved the combo of bitter pine and toasty malt on the finish. A very solid effort.

Serving type - 22oz bottle

Appearance - Dark tan/brown with black tint. Nice thick, foamy 1 inch head with lots of sticky lacing.

Smell - Dank, wet hops, roasty malts. Oranges, pineapple, apple, added sugars, a little chocolate and coffee at the finish.

Taste - First sip is much like the smell, roasted malts mix with some coffee and citric hops. Smooth sweet hops provide lots of orange, tangerine, mango and such. Some coffee bitterness along with some chocolate comes out after the first blast of hops. A little sugary flavor and some earthy spices come out at the finish.

Mouthfeel - Citric hops with some roasty malts coat the tongue. Palate gets more of the same, with a little coffee and chocolate note. Aftertaste is citric, coffee bold and a little malty.

Overall - A nice black ipa. The citric hop kick gives this a west coast style ipa flavor that works nicely with the malts and coffee aspect. Smooth, balance is good and full of flavor. One of the better black ipa's out there.

From the 650 ml. bottle. Sampled on May 10, 2014.

The pour is dark brown with some mahogany hues lighting up the edges of the glass. A full, foamy being head that settles some but leaves a lot of lacing.

Aroma of floral and grassy hop notes with the dark, sweet malts playing up in the background.

The body is medium to bold and quite satisfying.

All those hops jump out in the flavor to overtake my taste buds while the dark, sweet, licorice malts remain low but balanced. Lingering bitterness at the finish. A good hoppy black IPA.

Poured into pint glass from bomber

A-Nice and dark with a deep amber/mahogany tint. Thick head with nice, fine lacing at first dissipating partially over a few minutes.

S-Citrus, grassy with some of the darker notes as well, maybe some of the roastiness coming through here.

T-Fits the smell. Nice roastiness followed by some lingering citrus and bitterness. Really enjoyable.

M-A good weight to it without being too heavy/syrupy. Coats nicely.

O-Not as complex on the nose as some, but very enjoyable example of black IPA that isn't too far on either end of the malt/hop spectrum. Would buy again.

Bomber bottle, Best before 7/21/14 etched onto the bottle

Pours darn near black, supporting a lasting medium mocha head. Leaving nice ringed and scattered high lacing.

Nose is all about the citrus, oranges and grapefruits, nice

Flavorful, citric, hoppy with dark malts. Fine stuff. Hops keep flowing in wave after wave, continuing citric notes, more and more orange on the palate. Perhaps a bit thin mouth feel wise. But its a minor point, as this is super tasty, and west coast hop forward goodness. Highly enjoyable and a must try.

Dark brown, almost black and poured a tasty 2 finger head.

Very piney, some black licorice, and heavy hops dominate overall aroma.

Taste is more IPA than stout, a fine showing. This is definitely a hop dominant black IPA, and I'm not complaining. Just enough malt to balance the bitterness from the piney hops.

Mouthfeel is rather bitter, but not unpleasant.

Overall a very hoppy and delicious, but somewhat stouty, black IPA.

On-tap 4/14/2014 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a large foamy beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains roasted malts, citrus, some hops and some chocolate.

T: The taste starts out with a good burst of hops bitterness. Then some flavors of chocolate and coffee come in along with some citrus sweetness. The malt character is hearty and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, this is a nice beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.
