Smell is coffee, toffee, chocolate, earthy hops, pine, and some hints of citrus.

Taste starts with some nice expresso toffee flavors and finishes with a huge burst of citrus grapefruit that really lingers on the palate awhile.

Body is medium, plenty of life, a little dry, and easy drinking.

Overall I love it. What I would expect from one of my favorite brewers of hoppy goodness. (384 characters)

On-tap 4/14/2014 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep black color, with a large foamy beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is faint but contains roasted malts, citrus, some hops and some chocolate.

T: The taste starts out with a good burst of hops bitterness. Then some flavors of chocolate and coffee come in along with some citrus sweetness. The malt character is hearty and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly hoppy.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is dry and slightly sticky.

O: Tasty, goes down very easily, not too filling, good kick, very good representation of style, this is a nice beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style. (799 characters)

Pores a pretty much black body with one finger tan head and left lace patches. The aroma is mostly piney, citric hops with minor roasted malt notes in the background. Full bodied and slightly chewy, the hops are strong and this beer is more hoppy than malty, not that the balance is totally askew. The roasted malts are evident and there is a slight biscuit feeling along with sweetness, but mostly I get the strong hop presence in this beer. I really like this ale as I prefer black ipas that are hoppier than what is usual of style. (534 characters)

First, an aside: BJCP should fix the naming of this category. The debate is long over, "IPA" sells!

Anyway, this one pours a mostly clear dark orange edged dark brown with billowing tan colored head. Big pillows of foam clinging to the glass, with a half inch of head staying for the remainder. Smell: pine, grapefruit peel, dried apricot, toffee note. Taste: sugary into roasty and caraway notes quickly overtaken by pine and grapefruit peel. It's over quickly. Nice example but not a standout for me. Best by 7/21/14. (520 characters)

Very black with an off-white to tan head, ok lace, not bad looking.

Aroma and taste are very nice, but I would rate this more of a black ale (as listed) than a black IPA, as it seems more balanced than I think of a true IPA style beer (which would be heavily weighted towards hops). Bitterness is not lacking by any means, but really on the flavors I get more roasted, burnt, and toasted malts than anything particularly notable in hops.

Body is medium but drinkability is pretty high. Finish is smooth roastiness with a bitter tinge. Overall it's Green Flash, which is about all that needs to be said. (605 characters)

Pours cola brown to make up a very dark body, small off white cap of foam. Retention is just okay with a solid sheet of lacing.

Malty, chocolate and toasted bread with a huge profile of fruitiness from Green Flash house yeast. Malt masks alot of the hops leaving some faint citrus and pine to battle with the pungent fruit esters and malt.

Bready malt, some toffee and cocoa but overall very charred and buttery. The hops are a tickling pine with pronounced bitterness, very little complexity of depth. Alcohol is present but complementary to the bitterness.

Medium bodied with adequate carbonation. Slick and thin over the palate which makes it fairly drinkable. The higher soapy bitterness gives it a pleasant drying.

Not a great black IPA, low hop presence and overly charred malt. Decent enough. The fruity esters from the yeast are also bothersome. I prefer a bold citrus hop profile to stand out from the dark malt, here is just blends and falls flat. See FW Wookey Jack, Deschutes Hop in the Dark and Knee Deep Midnight Hoppiness for better representations. (1,068 characters)

Serving type - 22oz bottle

Appearance - Dark tan/brown with black tint. Nice thick, foamy 1 inch head with lots of sticky lacing.

Smell - Dank, wet hops, roasty malts. Oranges, pineapple, apple, added sugars, a little chocolate and coffee at the finish.

Taste - First sip is much like the smell, roasted malts mix with some coffee and citric hops. Smooth sweet hops provide lots of orange, tangerine, mango and such. Some coffee bitterness along with some chocolate comes out after the first blast of hops. A little sugary flavor and some earthy spices come out at the finish.

Mouthfeel - Citric hops with some roasty malts coat the tongue. Palate gets more of the same, with a little coffee and chocolate note. Aftertaste is citric, coffee bold and a little malty.

Overall - A nice black ipa. The citric hop kick gives this a west coast style ipa flavor that works nicely with the malts and coffee aspect. Smooth, balance is good and full of flavor. One of the better black ipa's out there. (996 characters)

Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass, best by 7/21/14. Pours a slick almost black, with a light tan sticky two inch head, that leaves webs of lace.

Appearance:
Truth in advertisement here... Pitch black body allows absolutely no light through its' walls. Beautiful, thick beige head with great retention and plenty of lacing.

Aroma:
Nice, roasted malts and coffee and pine hops. Notes of pistachios and pepper can also be found. I wish it were a bit more potent however.

Taste:
Right away, plenty of roasted character encapsulates a potent, bitter bite. Gobs of pine, little bit of coffee. Nutty aftertaste. No booziness. Enjoyable.

Mouthfeel:
Could be smoother, if I'm honest, but it doesn't ruin the experience. Fairly thick body and lightly carbonation. Clean finish but a bit dry.

Overall:
Very enjoyable beer here. Easy to drink considering its bite. Worth consideration! (735 characters)

This pours a luscious black cola with creamy foaming. There’s a great aroma with notes of pine and grapefruit pith, followed by an underlying roasty taste topped with a sticky sweet piney orange grapefruit. It’s dank and delicious with a finish that lasts for days.
I would love to see this enter the lineup. (312 characters)

Bomber > Pint Glass

A - Pours a nice black/brown with two fingers of tan head, thick lacing.
S - Lovely inviting aroma, coffee notes, roasted malts and chocolate, a little bit of a roasted nuttiness then some nice fruit notes, grapefruit, white grape, lemon zest
T - Drinks more like a regular IPA, lots of grapefruit, pine, and white grape juice with some bitter coffee roasts in the back.
M - Palate is left with a substantial bitter bite and slight dryness
O - Very good Black IPA, the aroma is great, but the flavor dips down to more of just straight hop flavor, which is disappointing. (594 characters)

Best by 7/21/14

Pours chestnut/mahogany with a thumb of tan head. Insane lacing & head retention

S: Pineyness, roastyness

T: Follows the nose, dryness, leafy hops & orange peel up front. More roastyness & dryness as this warms, plus grapefruit, leafy hops. Finishes slightly astringent, with grapefruit & pineyness

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, skews hoppy

Drinks easy, a nice Black IPA; not the best but one I might revisit (438 characters)

Surely black. Nice head mounting this beer. Crusty dry lace. Inch plus of tan foam.

Earthy citrus and pine. A little more going on than your usual grapefruit, spruce, and cocoa. Almost milder and more balanced than that. Rather earthy with coffee-like roast. Some herbal aromatics involved. The pine is a big-time contributor, but it has great restraint and character. Juicier than just pithy hops. Very nice.

Taste follows with more of that rounded hoppiness. Malts are all char and bitter coffee and not a lot of much else. Just enough to make it black, this is all about the hops. Moderate bitterness that cleans up in the finish. Alcohol isn't a problem, either. A little dextrinous. Has that good Green Flash grapefruit and pine combo with lots of C-hops. Great balance.

Feels scruffy, likable, bitter. Carbonated excitingly. Body is supple beneath all of these bubbles.

Two thumbs up. A black IPA that I can enjoy again. (930 characters)

Pours a dark black color with off white head and lacing. Good looking brew. Aroma is roasted and hoppy, almost minty.

In the taste, roasted malt with a bit of smoke to it and herbal, piney hops with mint and citrus. Interesting flavor. Medium bodied with a dry hop bite. Herbal, soothing, with some alpha acids working the orange zest impression.

Overall, a tasty black ipa with some unique flavor. (400 characters)

22oz, In My Experience snifter

A: Pours a very deep brown color. Some reddish hues around the edges. Nice full finger of light tan head. Some sticky lacing is left on the glass.

S: Nice earthy pine hop aroma on the nose. Getting some of that common roast, from the darker malts. Toasted grain. Chocolate. Some black licorice.

T: Good amount of hop bitterness up front, and throughout the sip. As it warms, some of that roast and chocolate come into play more. Finish has lingering pine. Bitterness. Nicely done BIPA.

M: Medium bodied. Thinner than expected from the appearance. (604 characters)

A - 4.0 - dark brown black color with a big frothy off white had that leaves nice lacing.
S - 4.0 - Pine and citrus, with roasty malts in the background.
T - 4.25 - Nice. This has a nice pine and citrus bite to it, but this is well balanced with the roasty dark malts. This is probably less citrusy/hoppy than Wookey Jack or Stone Sublimely Self Righteous, but because of this it's very unique in it's flavor. I'd recommend it to someone who wants a black IPA, but one where you can still obviously taste roasted malts.
M - 4.25 - Medium. Not super heavy for a black IPA. Aftertaste is bitter citrus and roasted coffee. Alcohol is very well covered.
O - 4.25 - This is a great black IPA, and at 6 dollars a bomber it's a good deal. I wouldn't be suprised if it has magnum and simcoe in it, it tastes very similar to a black IPA I homebrewed a while ago. (857 characters)

As a fan of black ipas and Green Flash, I was quite excited to see this on my store's shelves. It pours a deep black with a generous off-white head that gives way to a nice film but little lacing. The nose is a beautiful balance of citrus and pine hops and roasty coffee and caramel malt aromas. It sips quite light and very clean and crisp. I actually had hoped this would have a little more body to it. The flavor, while delicious, is not as good as the aroma. The hits with a very west coast hop bite, lots of citrus and pine. Then comes on with the roasted malts. The finish and aftertaste is coffee and bitter chocolate. There is a nice balance but I almost feel it could use just a touch more sweetness. It is definitely one if the hoppier black ipas that I have tried. Not my favorite black ipa or Green Flash offering but damn good. (840 characters)

22 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/21/2014. Pours crystal clear nearly opaque dark reddish brown color with a 2 finger dense light khaki head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice spotty soapy lacing clings aruound the glass. Aromas of grapefruit, tangerine, pineapple, mango, orange zest, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and roasted malt notes; with good strength. Taste of big tangerine, pineapple, mango, orange zest, grapefruit, cocoa, roasted malt, toast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral/toasted earthiness. Fair amount of earthy floral/pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tangerine, pineapple, mango, grapefruit, orange zest, cocoa, toast, light roast, floral, grass, light pine, and floral earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice complexity of citrus/tropical hop flavors with light-moderate roasted malt balance; with a great malt/bitterness balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium carbonation and body; with a smooth, crisp, and moderately sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with minimal warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice black IPA. All around good balance and complexity of citrus/tropical hops and light-moderate roasted malt flavors; and very smooth and crisp to sip on. A very enjoyable offering. (1,485 characters)

Bomber bottle, Best before 7/21/14 etched onto the bottle

Pours darn near black, supporting a lasting medium mocha head. Leaving nice ringed and scattered high lacing.

Nose is all about the citrus, oranges and grapefruits, nice

Flavorful, citric, hoppy with dark malts. Fine stuff. Hops keep flowing in wave after wave, continuing citric notes, more and more orange on the palate. Perhaps a bit thin mouth feel wise. But its a minor point, as this is super tasty, and west coast hop forward goodness. Highly enjoyable and a must try. (536 characters)

A- Pours a near black with a foamy khaki head of 2 fingers. Lighter accents around the edges.

S- Straight up pine on this one. Some roasted notes come in late

T- Good amount of piney hops again. Not overly complex. Slightly bitter.

M- Dry, mid body, clean finish. Soft on the pallet.

O- nothing special here. Flavor was a bit muddled and refrained. (353 characters)

Big bottle picked up at the COOP earlier this week... Pours with a long lasting sorta meringue like dark tan head... the brew is pretty much black.

Piney hops and expected light mix of coffee and dark malt... Coffee notes mix better with the spruce hops with warmth.

Flavor has the standard dark malt with some light toasty malt... hops show as light grapefruit and lesser pine. Surprisingly balanced for a Black IPA...

Body is pretty standard.

A: Pours a pitch black color with 2 fingers of beige head that slowly fades down to a foamy cap that leaves some nice lacing

S: Roasted malts along with some pine and floral hop notes. A very light fruitiness is also present. Nicely balanced

T: Starts off with the roasted malts and some dark chocolate, followed by the pine, floral, and fruity hop notes. Bitterness rolls in about mid-way through and follows through into the finish. Also finishes with more roast and some coffee notes

M: Medium-full bodied with moderate carbonation

O: A very nice example of the style. Nicely balanced between the roast and hoppy notes, with neither really dominating. The bitterness is nice and restrained but definitely present. Quite easy to drink as well. Definitely worth trying (792 characters)

I thought this beer way too bitter for the style, assuming that it is a black IPA and not a double.
The bitterness takes away from an already weak flavor.
The color was deep cinnamon brown with a tall beige head.
In the aroma were light hints of citrus and roasted malts.
The taste was weak and almost watery thin with some hints of hops malts and cocoa.
The mouthfeel was dry and bitter on the palate.
Green Flash is a top ten brewery for me no doubt about it, this one just didn't work. (488 characters)

Serving glass: Poured from bottle into Nonic Pint.

Appearance: More brown than black, with thick, frothy, mocha head.

Smell: Citrus, char, chocolate, chalk and pine.

Taste: Somewhat fruity malts with lots of grapefruit and pine hops. Chocolate, coffee and charred meat all come into play as well. Finish is fairly bitter with herbal & spicy notes, pine and roasted malts all adding to the sharp finish. Despite all the flavors and the bitter finish, the taste profile is subtler than expected.

Feel: Moderately low carbonation with a creamy body that is slightly thinner than hoped for. Dry finish but some slight chalkiness.

Overall: Nice Black Ale that I would certainly have again, but while the breadth of flavors is impressive, some others examples of the style have greater depth. (792 characters)

Raw hop character in a black IPA format, the appearance is cola brown with ruby highlights, big tan head forms thick, rocky texture. Aroma has pungent citrus peel and dark roasted malt layers combined into one, goes great with food. But my ideal IPA is citrus fruit grassy and clean the muddled alpha acids with dark roasts just don't work as well as your typical IPA without the dark roasted malts. Flavors have the dark chocolate notes with herbal, herbaceous dank weed, and grapefruit peel bitterness heavy in the backend finishes dry without much finesse. It's just hops and dark bitter roasted malt without much poetry between the two, gimme a porter or an hoppy IPA in place of the hybrid any day. Mouthfeel is resinous with hop oils it even makes your nares burn with the combination. Overall I can't wait to try something more approachable in the Black IPA department, this is good but I know there could be better versions out there. (942 characters)
