I don't know why I keep doing this to myself, buying hoppy beers when what I really crave is something different. Makes me feel like a hop addict. Tasted 26 October 2013.
Pours a hazy pale apple-juice orange. Just a shred of head, off-white. Okay retention and lacing. Not terrible, not the most impressive.
Smell: melon bomb! Sweet, juicy, melony hops, buoyed up by a hefty dose of caramel malts. Reminds me in particular of some Lagunitas beers, though the exact ones escape me at the moment. Smells deep and balanced; encouraging.
Taste: a big ole tongue-slap. Bitter, oh man there's a lot of acid in this one. It's a liquidy bitter, mostly lacking the chalky dryness that often irks me. But the bitter overpowers everything, and I'm struggling to find anything else. A whole lot of malt is in there, I can tell, but all it does is cut the edge a bit.
Feel is tingly, especially on the back end as the bitter really erupts. Medium-bodied, sticky, but not quite as candy-like as I expected given the ABV. Lasting, lasting, lasting, with those bitter waves coming again and again.
For an IPA this big, I'm surprised by the lack of balance. They must have put an incredible quantity of hops in this, or it must be really highly attenuated, to feel over-hopped at 10%. But it does. I like the melon, want more flavor beyond the pure, clean bitterness.
