A 500ml bottle with a BB of Jan 2014, so it's a little out of date. ABV is stated as 6%. Picked up not too long ago from a B&M store. I hope it's still in good shape. Originally brewed to celebrate the brewery's 125th anniversary (presumuably in 2000), following a recipe from the brewer's archives.

Poured into a tulip pint glass. A dark brown hue that appears black in the glass. Yields a large head of creamy beige foam that hangs around for a few minutes before subsiding to a patchy surface layer. Slight lacing. Aroma of mild roasted malt with hints of caramel, grain, subtle dried fruit, faint molasses, a twinge of brown sugar and ale yeast. Balanced but pretty subdued as stouts go.

Tastes of dark malt with a somewhat fruity character and a lingering finish. Notes of mild roasted malt, weak burnt grain, caramel, a hint of dried fruit, faint molasses, ale yeast and stewed leaves. Slightly sweet, followed by a mild, malty bitterness upon swallowing. Mouthfeel is smooth and dry, with soft carbonation and decent body. Lightly astringent, accompanied by an aftertaste of subtle dark malt, fruity hints and yeast esters.

So-so; an acceptable beer but not much of a stout. It looks OK, while the aroma and flavour offer subtle malt and dried fruit. Decent enough body. The label claims 'complex coffee aromas' - I can only observe that these are in short supply. As stouts go the roastiness is very subdued, and for 6% it doesn't provide much impact. Perhaps there has been some fade due to age? Drinkable but not outstanding - no need to hunt it down.

This beer is brewed to celebrate the 125 years of brewing at Northgate: based on a recipe for one of their first beers brewed there.

Sadly it wasn't a great recipe in my eyes.

Looked good enough, dark and rich. The aroma was fairly heavy, some coffee and roasted/toasted malts, they use muscovado suger in the brew apparantly.

The taste and mouthfeel were both weak and watery, which is a shame as four different hop varieties are added: Bramling Cross, cascade, Fuggles and Goldings. I couldn't find much evidence of any hop content, it was just a dry finish to a sugary, watery alcoholic liquid.
