Probably the best pub in the surrounding area for choice of real ale on cask, added to the fact it serves up great food and has a well preserved interior!
First the beers ... 18 Cask lines, usually 13 for real ale, 5 for cider
The ales come from micro breweries far and wide and you will often see 10 or 11 different breweries on display (unlike some bars who order in 3 or 4 barrels from the same brewery)
On my most recent visit (Oct 29th 2011) the following breweries were represented : - Stonehenge, Traditional Scottish Ales, Tring, Twickenham Fine Ales, RCH, Whitstable, WJ King, Corvedale, Elgoods (and a couple of others!)
All real ales are priced very reasonably - £3 a pint, £1.50 a half
A medium sized fridge proffers 30 to 40 bottled beers. Nothing particularly rare, but includes German, Belgian and Brew Dog offerings
The pub itself has a great interior, the front lounge is the hub of the place, but round the back to the left of the bar there is a great little room with original green and white tiles (I'd guess from the early 1930's?) and this is where we tend to gather
At the rear is a large well kept beer garden
Food wise - all home cooked and pies are the speciality. Had a home made Steak, red wine and Stilton Pie with Mash and vegetables for £9.95
Portion sizes are very generous
To get here ...
20 minute walk from Twickenham BR station or the 490 bus (every 10 minutes) - stops outside the front door !
Nearest stations are Fulwell or Strawberry Hill (direct train from London Waterloo - worth the 35/40 minute trip) and both approx 10 minute walk
