It is claimed that eleven years after Charles I had been beheaded by Oliver Cromwell's Parliamentarians, The Old Red Lion exhibited the exhumed bodies of Cromwell, Henry Ireton and John Bradshaw for a nights showing. Today, The Old Red Lion is a pub that serves a variety of beers, wines, spirits as well as a selection of English dishes throughout the day. No such shows today, sorry. Victorian in style on the outside, striped inside, although the back of the bar looks very old.
The reason I popped into here is because my daughter noticed a chalkboard advertising Batemans Salom Porter on cask as we walked past. I obviously couldn’t pass such a sign without investigating further: I had to give the pint back though, it was old and off: the manager was horrified and pulled himself a glass. He agreed with me, took my pint and replaced it with another beer. Five minutes later a free Salom Porter also stood in front of me, I like that sort of service!
The pub is sat between two Sam Smith inns (Ye Olde Citte of Yorke and The Princess Louise), so ideal to stop and visit if on a mission along High Holborn. It is a Greene King owned establishment, but stocks guest beers from all over, hence the Batemans. Not a lot of chairs, but plenty of floor space with window ledges and the likes to stand your pint on. An eating room is upstairs but I didn’t venture up there.
