The unique liquor laws in Colorado make this Whole Foods a standout among other Whole Foods. If you had to pick one place in the whole state to sell beer, I'd pick Boulder, too. I cheer Corporate's decision. Because it's a stand alone, the breadth and depth of their selection is wider than if they were to sell beer along with the food. While they can compete with other Boulder beer stores, it's likely that their selection will be smaller. I've been told by one of their employees, that there are a few hurdles to leap for a beer company to get one of their offerings into Whole Foods. This doesn't mean that you'll only find the more widely distributed micros, however. I have seen, for example, bombers from Bristol Brewing (Co. Springs) and Ska Local Series. What I wouldn't expect are the very small brewers with small distribution channels (e.g., Crooked Stave or Crystal Springs). You'll have to go to Liquor Mart for that. Given Whole Food's US-wide connections, I'd also suspect that they'd be a good bet for carrying popular but hard to find seasonals from out of state.

All-in-all, Whole Foods Wine and Sprits is a worthy establishment. It is lacking in atmosphere (it is a liquor store, but a warm and inviting liquor store), but the service is very good. All the sales people I've dealt with are extremely knowledgeable (and know what they like to drink). Is it the best place in Boulder? Probably not. Certainly worth the visit. You never know what you might find.

I've stopped by the Whole Foods Lq a few times now, and it's pretty much supplanted Liquor Mart as my liquor store stop whenever I'm in Boulder. As another reviewer observed, they might not have the same breadth of selection, but for anyone in the market for the rarer, top-shelf brews I've yet to be disappointed by this store. In fact I always find myself pacing back-and-forth in front of the cooler doors agonizing over which bottles I'll be leaving behind. Not a bad problem to have.

The store is very new and clean and the employees have always had knowledgable things to say about the beers I bring to the counter. The parking lot can be a disaster during busy times, but for me it's nice not having to go into downtown Boulder for a good bottle shop.

I have continually been impressed with the craft selection at Whole Foods Wine & Spirits. Many of the best available can be found here. I've had excellent luck finding many of the hard to finds, Firestone Walker's XV, Boulevard's Bourbon Barrel Quad & Chocolate Ale, New Belgian's Lips of Faith series, Zoetzuur, and Deschutes Stoic, Abyss, etc. Not only that, but many of the great year round Belgians can be found here.

The staff, especially the buyer for the beer, really knows their selection and is more than willing to spend the time to discuss what is out and what will soon be available. Overall, this is my goto place when I know what I want and can't find it anywhere else.
