New York

4.38/5  rDev 0%

The wife and I were leaving Decatur, Illinois, and heading back home to New York City. On our way to Chicago/O'Hare, I decided to stop by Peoria to see one of Frank Lloyd Wright's most magnificent houses and also to eat at June Restaurant in nearby Peoria Heights.

June is truly an outstanding restaurant in a little Prairie town. On par with what you may find in Chicago or New York, but with slightly lower prices, June is a gem of a dining joint with an emphasis on super-fresh products from the best farms in the US and abroad (I had a sea-bream from Spain to die for).

So the food gets a 5.0 indeed, but what really surprised me was the beer selection. I sure was not expecting to get a vintage Founders KBS '09!

There are some 25 bottles here, divided in 7 styles (American & English, lagers, wheats, abbey, golden/farmhouse, imperial ales, wild ales).

Lots of good names: West Coast IPA, Southern Pumpkin, Avery Samael '10, Founders Dirty Bastard, Chimay, Westmalle, Hennepin, Duvel, Boulevard Saison Brett, Founders Breakfast Stout, KBS, Struise/Stillwater Outblack, BORIS The Crusher, Oude Gueuze, New Belgium La Folie...

Yeah. They are serious about good beer here! And such good prices too, considering this is the best restaurant in Central Illinois. $9 for vintage KBS and Samael, $8 for Southern Pumpkin and $4 for Breakfast Stout. Better than any bar!

Speaking of, the restaurant's website says they have a bar but I didn't see any. This is not a place where you come to have beer, but you sure could come over, sit at the tables, have an appetizer or too and enjoy the beer menu.

Peoria is lucky to have such a quality restaurant. Cheers!
