This bottle is from 2011.
Pours an opaque deep brown with a frothy, lingering tan head.
Light smoke, chocolate, roasted and deeply toasted malt, and a hint of tar form the aroma.
Flavor reveals tar at the base, which lingers into the lightly bitter finish. Roast malt forms the backbone, with smoke adding a complementary back note. Chocolate provides a welcome accent. The balance is roasty and lightly bitter.
Body is moderate, with carbonation a tad on the high side, and subtle alcohol warmth.
Never had this fresh, but the flavor have melded well together , at this point. Smoke doesn't overwhelm, roast is the star, and chocolate adds a nice character. There's a bit of a plasticy phenol that's slightly offputting.

I got this in a 22oz bomber for $1.25 at big lots! I am just sampling out of sample glass I got at oktoberfest here in fresno.
APPEARANCE: its a redish brown color dark but very see through, not like most other porters I have had. Had to pour pretty rough to get any kind of head.
SMELL: first off I smell straight roasted chocolate, its got just a very malt forward smell, I also smell raisins..like chocolate covered raisins, no hop aroma what so ever
TASTE: smokey roasty chocolate right off the bat! Light Coffee in the background, taste a little bit of the alcohol which is not suprising at 8%.
MOUTHFEEL: medium bodied
OVERALL: good but I've had better. I do like the smokey taste to it, they did that well. I like it though! On a scale of 1-10 I give it a 6

Poured into a sam adams custom glass, color is dark brown, amber edging, head presents nicely at 1/2 inch thick dissipates to a ring that clings the glass with some bubbly lacing.
Smell is sweeter chocolate malt, some roast, no smoke, maybe some dry earthiness. A little disappointing.
Taste has a touch of subtle smoke flavor, mainly from its dry finish on the tongue, malt flavors are slightly sweet from chocolate and a solid roast flavor. Hops are subtle and bitter, earthy and drying. Very surprising this clocks in at 8%, nice flavors and drinkability.
Mouthfeel is as expected from a solid strong porter or smoked porter, nice lingering flavor profile, solid bitter presence on the tongue and cheeks.
Overall, a disappointing smoked porter but a solid easy drinking strong porter.

22-oz bottle into porter/stout glass
A - shallow medium tan head over a body of pitch black with ruby highlights
S - mocha, chocolate milk, grainy malts, smoke
T - coffee, chocolate, malt sweetness, smoke, dark fruits, notes of wood
M - oily medium body (a bit lighter than expected), high carbonation
O - This is an excellent porter. Head retention is unimpressive and it could use a little more body, but the taste and smell are excellent!

Poured chilled in ale glass
A: solid black; very good carbonation; decent head; ok lacing
S: smells of a stout, much like a Rasputina. Starts with smoke elemnt, but turns quickly to carmelized malt
T: smoke is a very light element of this beer; basically it's a classic stout/porter with a very dark roast profile; surprisingly sweet, not hoppy; strongly complex taste; well paired with the booze
Good! But don't expect a lot of smoke.
