From BeerAdvocate magazine Issue #62 (Mar 2012):

LOOK: Clear golden, minimal lace

SMELL: Vanilla, cookie dough, fresh bread, clean, faint alcohol

TASTE: Mild vanilla, bready malt, muted hops, husk, carbonic, dry finish

A plain Pale Ale with a timid addition of vanilla makes for a very middle-of-the-road brew. The aroma comes across more appealing than the flavor. Perhaps a better fit with a meal rather than on its own? One and done.

12oz bottle poured into a tumbler. Enjoyed at home.

A: Cloudy yellow-orange with a moderate off-white head, which lingered for a significant time. Nice coloration for a pale ale, though largely unremarkable.

S: Hints of vanilla up-front, with subtle notes of citrus and a slightly sweet, malty undertone. For a "vanilla pale ale," I'd say that the vanilla scent is less than expected.

T: Vanilla is clearly present on impact, but still underwhelming -- competing with a kind of tangy, citrus flavor that becomes an almost bitter finish. Hints of vanilla return for a slight aftertaste.

M: Smooth and light, bordering on thin. Carbonation is unremarkable.

O: Generally "average," but also somewhat disappointing. For a "vanilla pale ale," the vanilla flavor just isn't living up to the name, leaving a tangy citrus flavor to dominate. It would be a decent beer to enjoy on a hot day, but the flavors seemed askew and almost boring. Drinkability is reduced because of the strange, tangy flavor. Not at all excited to drink this again.

A - light hazy golden, one finger of head retained at a thin covering and left some random lacing
S - grainy with light grass, pleasant touch of vanilla, with a slight sour bite
T - much like the nose with an added mineral flavour that is quite prominent and seems to almost replace the vanilla
M - light and well carbonated, just a touch prickly, finishes dry and mineral like
O - its not a bad beer but its definitely average, the vanilla that is prominent on the nose seems to wilt on the tongue, worth a try but not a repeater

Poured from a 12 ounce bottle into a pint glass.

Pours a soft copper, no foam. Clear top. Creamy vanilla nose. A little peppery. Taste is a vanilla dominated malt, which stays sweet and wards away any bitterness. A bit obvious, but the dominant flavor really is the vanilla. Smooth and tasty.

Trying this beer based on its horrific reputation...Poured from a 12oz bottle into a pint glass.

A: Pours a hazy light orange with a small white head.

S: Unpleasant, fake-smelling vanilla, a bit of soapy grain, not much else.

T: The same mildly disgusting fake vanilla. The tiniest, thinnest hint of floral hop. That's it.

M: Light-bodied, tingly carbonation.

O: I'm amazed that they've actually been able to sell this stuff. Disgusting fake vanilla aroma and flavor, almost no hops, no malt flavors. Definite drainpour.

Poured into a perfect pint.

3.5 A: Lightly hazed yellow orange color. One finger of frothy off-white head. Retention is a tad below average and a short ring of lacing is left.

2.5 S: The vanilla is about the only thing you will find. It covers up anything else that might be in here. It's not quite as bad as I would have guessed, but it still isn't very good unless you are bat shit crazy over vanilla.

2.75 T: The taste is better than the nose simply because it tastes like beer. Again lots of vanilla. Neutral maltiness, which I'm happy to find.

3.25 M: Lighter medium body. Good moderate carbonation. Light creaminess.

2.75 D: It's not good, but at least it isn't terrible.
