On hand-pump at Alewife. I've never had a cask lagerbier before...

A: The dunkel is, well, a syrupy brown dunkel color. The handpump has stripped all pretenses of head away, leaving a still beer that sits in a state of catatonia.

S: Mmmm, chocolate malts. The lagerbier has plenty to go around, along with a solid dose of caramel. The cask has settled aromas out, leaving only darker malts to come through.

T: Very chewy, like liquid bread. The dark roasted malts, burnt but not heavy, mix with sweet caramel throughout. The lack of carbonation (and there really is none to speak off) leaves you with a malted beverage, minimal alcohol and very unusual. I'm not sure that a beer like this was meant for a firkin.

M: The mouthfeel is all malts, chocolate breads and caramel syrup. The hop profile is minimal.

D: A good dunkelbier made more interesting by the cask. Lots of syrupy sweet flavors.

A: Pours dark brown with a tall, rather creamy pale brown head. Rich lacings.

S: The first thing that comes to mind is iron, lots of iron. The there is light roasted dark malts and some faint chocolate - but everything besides the iron is very mild.

T: This is more like it; roasted dark, somewhat sweet malt. Dark dried fruits and some rye breadyness. The iron is gone (thank Good - who wants a beer to taste like blood?).

M: Body is light and carbonation medium. The aftertaste is mostly sweet and lingers for som time.

O: The smell of iron (blood) was way of, but if you don't consider that - not to shabby.

Gravity cask at Gourmet Haus Staudt.

Dark brown appearance in the bulky Spaten stein (blasphemous, I know), almost opaque. It's bright and clear when held to the light, and the head shows solid retention.

The nose is great, loaded with aromas of toasted malt, brown sugar, biscuit and faint earthy fruit.

Light on the palate, surprisingly so, but very malty and clean. Toasted and lightly caramelized, there's a hint of dark fruit toward the finish before a mild hop kick takes over. Very refreshing for such a dark beer, the appearance is deceptive.

Despite the lack of wordiness in my review, this was excellent and I easily killed over a liter in one sitting and could have had more if the cask hadn't died. Truly great stuff.

Smells of toasted malt and cocoa. Tiny white head never really amounted to much. Deep brown beer with an amber glow. Mild flavor is a mix of cocoa and black tea. There is a light bitter bite in the finish. Low carbonation and moderately light body make it a bit watery. I feel like the score is going to make this beer look worse then it really is. Besides the lack of head there is nothing really wrong with it. I know Landbier isn't supposed to be very carbonated, but most have a richer mouthfeel then this. It's probably comparable to a beer in the 3.8 - 3.9 range.

Found in Moscow's newest super fancy grocery store, the stubby brown half liter bottle features a slight bulge in the neck, a swing-top and a red, white and gold label featuring a brown bear lapping from a Masskrug full of pale (not dark?) beer. Purity law applies, of course. Best before 8/1/06, I opened it on 3/10/06.

Pours a clear light brown under a two finger beige head that settles quickly to thick film across the top. There's not much body, and no lace. The nose is sweet with caramel, but not particularly strong. The mouth is pretty prickly and very clean, leaving nothing after the swallow. The taste is dominated by caramel malt, sweet and candy-like. A very subdued hoppy bitterness lurks in the background, but never really comes to the fore. The aftertaste is all sweet, with almost of plum not to it. The beer is OK, but is a bit too modest to be great.

Ahornberger Landbier Dunkel ABV 5.1% and BB 12-11-05. Nice presentation with yellowbrownish head and darkamberbrown beercollor. Nose is maximum maltyness, sweetish munich to the max and not much els as this great sweet maltyness. Taste gives lots of maltarome also but great and clean bitterness with it making it sweet taste but dry finish. Clean fermentation with bottom fermenting yeast comes fine to this brew andmakes mouthfeel smooth and well balanced. Enjoyahle brew to me wishing me to be im Fichtelgebirge and enjoying this one on a nice rest after a long way in the forrest.
