Pale amber colour, clear, small disappearing head, tiny amount of lacing. Aroma was banana with hints of clove. Tasted banana, clove, caramel, finish was earthy, grassy malt. Texture was on the thick side but worked, medium carbonation, smooth. This was balanced and had enough character to be considered a good Märzen.

Found in Moscow's newest premiere grocery store, the brown half liter bottle is wide around the middle with a slight bulge in the neck below a swing-top seal. The label is white, gold and green, with the Bavarian flag design on the top of a 3 keg pyramid and a coat of arms. Purity law applies, of course. Best before 8/1/06, I opened it on 3/10/06 - Happy Birthday, Mom!

Pours a clean light copper tone under a two finger white head that lingers well and leaves pretty healthy lace strings. The nose is strong and full of freshly baked pumpernickel bread - very enticing. The mouth is light and moderately prickly. Lots of malt here, both sweet caramel and bready grain. The hops are polite at first, remaining in the background while the sweet stuff does its thing. Then they slowly build, like a wave starting at the back of the jowels. The dry bitter reaches crescendo just after the finish, leaving an inviting mix of sweet and bitter to linger long into the aftertaste. Very well done.
