16 oz can was poured into an imperial pint glass.

Appearance: This beer poured a one finger mocha head that reduced to a thin layer with nice lacing left on the glass. It is a pitch black color with no vision of bubbles coming up through the glass. Super tight lacing down the glass as the beer was drank.

Smell: Smokey, roasted, chocolate, toffee, caramel, bready malts, and old ale smell.

Taste: Definitely a chimney. Smoked malts are a bit overbearing of the other porter flavors.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium bodied, smokey bitterness low to medium carbonation, and a little chewy.

Overall: A good porter, but would have been more enjoyable and tastier with less smoked malts. I feel the beer would have been more balanced that way.

nose of roasted malt, light peat smoke and chocolate

nice tan dense head that leaves steady lacing

taste is very well balanced that starts semi sweet and follows the nose with up from semi sweet chocolate and roast malt. it finishes dry with of dark roast coffee and light smoke. The peated malt adds an appealing fresh earthy smoke that is subtle and unique. I am a huge fan of peated single malts like Laphroaig and Ardbeg so this was right up my alley.

It has a nice rich mouth feel but its not heavy and very quaffable at 6%

overall a great porter with a smokey twist. Reminiscent of some Scottish ales in the finish with the peated malt and mi a big fan.

From the one pint can. Sampled on February 1, 2014.

The pour is a deep dark brown to nearly black with a long lasting silky mocha head. It is the way I like my Porters to look.

The aroma is slightly smoked like smoked cheddar cheese, some milk chocolate, and little to no hop character.

The body is very creamy and well above medium.

The taste brings out the milk chocolate a bit more so than the smoke suggests on the nose. A slight bitterness from hops that you can taste but not really smell. Dry finish. Nice.

Appearance: Black, brown/red edges, tan finger of head, fair amount of lace.

Aroma: Smoke, roast, coffee grounds, cocoa powder.

Tate: up-front dry chocolate, roast, char, smoke, dark fruits. Semi-sweet finish.

Mouthfeel: creamy, smooth, light to medium body, dry. Quaffs easily.

Overall: not a smoke bomb, but balanced well with roasty chocolate notes.

Consumed 1/6/13

Appearance: Dark brown, with a creamy off-white head - nice cap, nice ring, leaves some serious streaks of lacing - very impressive retention

Smell: Chocolate and smoked malts - like a blend of ash and baker's chocolate - the smoke is quite obvious, but not excessive, works well with the dryness from the burnt, chocolate malts - roasted grains, some baker's chocolate, burnt popcorn - not much depth in the malts, also lacking hops

Taste: Chocolate, super-roasty coffee, and smoke - clean, smoky dryness - not remarkably burnt, but the flavor is reminiscent of burnt popcorn - dry, chocolate malts - burnt coffee - minimal sweetness, minimal bitterness - light grassiness in the back

Mouthfeel: Medium-light body, nice carbonation, smooth, definitely quaffable even with the smoke

Overall: Interesting, would pair well with a campfire, woodstove, or ashtray

My feelings are a bit mixed on this offering from Grey Sail. The smoke flavor is great for what it is, and it's not overly potent. Nonetheless, the smoke really hides anything else that may be interesting in this beer. Bonus points for the tallboy format.

Sixteen oz. tallboy can...

Poured into a pint glass a bit too aggressively. Massive foamy head, thankfully fell quickly to a thin cap that laced fairly well.

Appearance was a chocolate color with reddish hues. Nice enough looking, pretty typical.

Aroma was very faint smoke, roasted coffee notes. Slight bit of chocolate aroma. Sweetness comes through. Not a particularly strong aroma overall.

Good tasting beer, nothing overwhelming or one-dimensional. Quite earthy, laid back on the coffee, a little heavy on the bitterness but not unpleasant. Some sweetness comes through, and almost a salty taste - mineral-like.

It was fairly smooth and creamy, carbonated just enough to be lively. Smooth, but a little thin.

Overall a good beer to have at a good price. Solid offering that I will keep around - nice to have in the 16 ounce cans. Pretty easy drinking, and guests enjoyed it, nothing spectacular but I don't think it is supposed to be, either. A good brew.

Opaque black with a creamy looking thin grey clay head. Smells like roast malt, Ovaltine and an odd steel sink and brine tint.

This smoked porter lacks any smoke. None. Dark chocolate and roast malt with a little vanilla. A dessert beer. This would be nice in a bourbon barrel.

On-tap 12/17/2011 at Track 84, in Warwick, RI served in a US tumbler pint glass.

A: The beer is a deep dark brown color with a short beige head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma contains roasted malts, coffee, chocolate, some smokiness and a faint touch of hops.

T: The taste starts with a hearty smoked malt character followed by flavors of coffee and chocolate. The smokiness is not overdone there’s a decent and complementary hops presence that creates a nice balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is slightly sticky.

O: Very tasty, goes down easily, not too filling, decent kick, very good representation of style, this is a very good porter to drink for a long time.

On tap. Pours a dark brown color with an inch of tan head. Lots of lacing. Aroma is smokey with some roasted malts and dark chocolate. Taste is really smokey with some roasted malts, coffee beans and dark chocolate. Slightly bitter chocolate finish. Mouthfeel is a bit light for the style. Overall, I am impressed. Both of the beers by this brewery are worth having for sure.
