Yay can.... interestingly cracking the top it starting foaming over the top, forcing me to rush the initial pour, and yielding a deep 3 finger foamy bubbly head that forces me to stop pouring into the SA Perfect Pint glass, fades at a med pace with decent foamy lacing, clear honey tan orange color with very little bubbles coming up frmo the etch.

Nose grainy toasty malt little wheat like straw aroma, little wet hay, bready, into fairly creamy malt base, almost yeasty warm fermentation like aroma, a dank wet hay and light grassy slight herbal like hop.

Taste starts crisp, with lots of malt characters, toasty grainy bready malts, light toasted wheat, little wet hay musty flavor, into creamy blond malt characters, bready almost doughy. Then mild grassy slight herbal dank hops, mild bitterness, and a little thin feeling overall. Finish is dry but a little sticky and more dank hay like flavors, hay and straw again lingering, bit more on the grassy herbal hops lingering with a bit more bitterness.

Mouth is lighter bod, very little creamy, little thin feeling too, lighter carb surprisingly.

Overall not bad but not great either, a little thin, malts are nice, hops are so-so, not very creamy, light carbonation somehow, refreshing but just a decent tasting beer.

From BeerAdvocate Magazine #84 (Jan 2014):

A rustic Cream Ale. No problem knocking back this flagship. An ideal session ale in a can—what else can you ask for? If this ale was cleaned up a little and was able to keeps its smoothness, it would be a Cream Ale to reckon with. Worth a go regardless.

STYLE: Cream Ale
ABV: 4.9%

LOOK: Hazed golden straw, great retention

SMELL: Fresh grain, faint buttery tone, mild caramel, doughy, floral, light citrus rind

TASTE: Deep smoothness, crisp graininess, bready, peppery hop, wildflowers, modest hop bitterness, earthy, nutty yeast, vegetal, faintly dank and spicy, crackers, drying finish

In a pint glass, this beer was a gold color with virtually no head.

One dimensional aroma, just a bit of sweet malt.

There were some hops noted in the taste, but still not much more than sweetness.

Very light, almost like drinking water.

Something to drink when mowing the lawn.

12 oz can from my third beer-of-the-every-other-month-club. Poured into a large tulip glass.

A -- Pale kind of copper color with decent white head. Good carbonation. Not too hazy or clear. Highlights around the edges.

N -- Metallic. Light malts.

T -- Very subtle. Not a lot going on. Not bad, but not a lot of complexity either. Mostly a light toasted malt flavor.

M -- Light.

O -- Okay, for what it is. Would not seek out again.

Another beer courtesy of woodychandler. Poured from a 12 oz. can. Has a rich golden color with a 1/2 inch head. Smell is of malts, a touch of sweetness. Taste is crisp, malty, creamy, a touch of hops, easy drinking. Feels medium bodied in the mouth and overall is a pretty good beer.

Consumed 11/30/12

Appearance: Light amber, dark gold in the light - mostly clear, slight chill haze- pours with a small, off-white head, keeps a little cap, leaves some nice spots of lacing

Smell: Interesting, mostly good - pale and lightly toasted grains - hearty white bread with a touch of honey - dough and some flowers - slight vegetal edge, like sweet corn - clean, lightly sweet, with some grassy hops

Taste: Doughy, yet lightly toasted, bread - kind of like a grainy bread with corn and honey - a light grainy sweetness balanced by a mild bitterness - lightly earthy, with some grass and fibrous vegetables - some hints of light citrus in the background

Mouthfeel: Medium body, nicely smooth as a cream ale should be, nicely carbonated

Overall: Good enough to be a flagship

Choosing a Cream Ale as a flagship beer for a new brewery seems a bit odd. But Grey Sail pulled it off. This is an all-around solid beer, more interesting than the "average" Cream Ale. If only these came in tallboys...
