Wow, this is one dark porter. Not cola-colored, not coffee brown, but solid black. Looks fantastic, with a thin, tight layer of foam atop. I’m excited to try it.

Great roast aroma. It has undertones of dark cherries and some Italian roast espresso along with a touch of cacao. Flavor has a mild roast to it. Some bitter chocolate undergirds it as well. It is exceptionally smooth, with a lightly sweet finish. This was incredible! My favorite of the Einstok brews.

330ml brown bottle purchased from some random shop in Soho, London. My first Icelandic beer.

Pours a pleasant deep brown, opaque and firmly hazed. Head forms a fine but unpersistent head of beige that nonetheless leaves some large-patterned lace. Fine carbonation when tilted. Looks reasonably good.

Nose is extremely mild, to the point of pointlessness, if you get my meaning. Some faint, toasty malt, perhaps a suggestion of smoke, and a little citric fragrance. But it's searching for it to find these characters. Mostly, it's almost pointless.

Taste is certainly a little better. Smooth malt forms a solid basis, and although it doesn't do a lot with what's there, there is a touch of roasted malt, and some faint smoky characters that almost leave a spicy twinge on the back. Still, it's extremely weak as well: nothing like a robust flavour.

Feel is weak and thin: it's perhaps this more than anything that makes this beer seem so insipid.

Overall, this is pretty bad. It's a very, very poor effort at a porter, or any sort of dark beer in general. While I'm pleased to have tried a beer from Iceland, this is a very disappointing introduction to the country's output.

Purchased from UTOBEER recently, coming in a 330ml slim brown bottle, not bottle-conditioned but also unfiltered; bottled on 23/07/2013, BB 23/07/2015, served lightly chilled in a straight pint glass. Notes: this bottle comes at 5.2%abv., and the front label specifies this ale is brewed with "Icelandic roasted coffee"...!!!

A: pours a nearly black colour in the glass, coming with a restrained layer of dark beige foam and rather mild carbonation.
S: on the nose, it’s pretty clean, featuring toasted malts upfront, jammy black fruits and roast nuts behind, while dark chocolates seem to lend some extra pleasure overall.
T: pretty light-bodied on the entry, the foretaste comes fairly bitter-sweet malty, with leather-ish and earthy notes overall, reminiscent of roasted nuts a lot along with some cocoa-like profile of sweeter side of dark malts; followed by lightly bitter, acidic and burned cold coffee (voila!), mildly lubricating in the finish, pleasantly bitter but rather clean as well.
M&O: mildly carbonated, not to the point of being “smooth” but not far off, either, while the flavour profile is generally balanced against a moderate body. An all-round good drinking porter/stout with some decent quality to it. I like it.

Pours black, half finger of head, drinking out of a coffee mug, so it may have a little light on the edges but I sure as hell would not know.

Smell is toffee, caramel, roasted malt, coffee, maybe a earthy hop coming through, chocolate aroma aswell

Taste is roast heavy, burnt notes, earthy hop bitterness, caramel and toffee notes in the middle, finishes with a coffee like bitterness and a little molasses sweetness.

Mouthfeel is medium, maybe a little high on carbonation for my tastes in a porter.

Overall a decent showing for a porter here, Do not understand the best by date of 2015 for a standard abv beer, but hey it is from Iceland which is also cool!

Pick it up if you like the style, if you are not that into porters and are just looking to try 1 or two examples of the style I would stick to the likes of Founders Porter and Great Lakes Edmund Fitzgerald.

Poured into a room-temperature pint glass after pulling the bottle out of the refrigerator.

Appearance - Opaque, very dark, black; poured a nice frothy head which dissipated very quickly; decent lacing on the sides of the glass throughout.

Smell - Chocolate; caramel; malt; spicy (not sure exactly which spices, though), smokey edge.

Taste - Initial bitterness is tempered by chocolate, coffee, caramel, malt-taste. Molasses, dark-fruit, smooth goodness. Very tasty beer.

Mouthfeel - Slightly bitter but smooth, especially for a 6.0 ABV beer.

Overall - Very good porter. I didn't know Iceland had a brewery but I'm pretty impressed! I would seek this porter out again; well done.
