A: A creamy, rich khaki coating sits above a dense and darken ruby colored body. Head retention was good, the lacing a bit weak to hold and retain, with a light sense of carbonation along the vessel walls. I love the dark red coloring here.

S: Fresh, dry aroma of coffee grounds from a freshly opened package combines with a freshly opened pumpkin. Earthy soot is gentle, with some charred wood against a dry chocolate stout base malting. Im also getting a strong scent of pumpkin seeds and spices such as vanilla, cinnamon and a dusting of nutmeg. Generally lasting aroma.

T: Earthy coffee pumpkin is best way to first describe this. The coffee beans are freshly ground with some vanilla latte and cinnamon spicing. The chocolate base is there, porter like, with a dry sweetness finishing off with some nutmeg and a mild roastiness.

M: Lax carbonation makes this a gentle feel in the mouth with a light medium body that thickens and creams up a bit more on the hold. A gentle warming of chili-chocolate is there as well.

O: A nicely accented pumpkin porter, not overly spiced, makes this a drinkable example for general consumption. Love the natural pumpkin feel, fresh coffee grounds and tints of vanilla that are finely balanced together. A solid mid B offering, can packaged for that fall time camping expedition around the campfire that won't weigh you down and keep you in the story and conversation longer.
The appreciation is in the gentle subtle complexity.

I am working through what once seemed like an impenetrable backlog here at Chez Woody, focusing mainly on bottles, but also doing things stylistically. As such, I reviewed a Pumkin Saison last night and tonight, I am beginning with a Pumpkin Porter and moving on from there. It is nice to get in th e occasional CANQuest (tm) beer.

From the CAN: "Pressed against a shimmering 80's club scene, Round Guys Dead Souls Pumpkin Porter delivers a brilliant toasty richness paired against skillfully layered pumpkin flavor. On stage, its medium body and edgy rhythms blend together for a roof shattering finish. Off stage, it boasts of hints of vanilla and cinnamon flavors gently riding the coattails of a thick cloak of balanced Porter goodness. Tasty. Distinct. Dark. These Dead Souls will be dancing.

The Crack! was nice and loud and served as a clarion call to CANduct an inverted Glug. Man, I had forgotten how quickly beer CAN come rushing out if given the opportunity. This resulted in a finger of foamy, light-tan head with moderate retention. Color was Dark Brown to Very Dark Brown (SRM = > 27, < 34) with NE-quality clarity and garnet highlights. Nose held the typical pumpkin ale spices of cinnamon and nutmeg, but this was backed up by an interesting chocolatiness. Hmmm. Mouthfeel was medium-to-full, not quite creamy, but close. The taste was like cold MexiCAN hot chocolate - spicy and chocolaty at the same time. This was not only different from so many Pumpkin Ales, but it was also really tasty. I did not have the time or inclination to set up a double boiler, but I'd bet that this would really be good warmed slightly. I speak from experience, having done so with BFM's La Dragonne while visiting Anchorage, AK in 2008. Finish was dry, mostly due to the spices, but I really think that it is a worthwhile beer and one trying warmed or mulled. Mull that over!

I've had this beer twice over the past year. The first time was from a cask/hand-pull at a local bar. I didn't like it but I suspected it was an older cask because I detected some oxidation, so I didn't want to write it off. I had the beer again recently from a can my wife purchased for me at the brewery, which is what this review is based on.

I poured from the can into a nonic glass and the head fizzled away to nothing in a few short seconds. The look and smell is just OK. The taste is burnt bitterness, some vanilla, and metallic notes. Supposedly this has pumpkin in it, but I don't taste it. The body is thin with fast and prickly carbonation. Imagine a burnt piece of scrap metal drizzled with vanilla dissolved in seltzer water.

Part of me has to wonder if they have QA issues with their mobile canning service or carbonation levels. The can's opening "pop" was sort of muted compared to what I usually expect.

It seems that Round Guys may have a carbonation issue. Three parts foam and one part beer. Tastes muddled and mildly roasted. Eh. I dunno. This is lame.

Paid 3 dollars for the single. Into a pint glass.

A - A bit deeper brown color than I expected with a mild orange hue. Head is a 1/2 inch of tanish foam that slowly settles to a ring.
S - Toasty porter notes of roasted coffee, mild cinnamon and nutmeg, some candied yams. Smell is actually quite good.
T - Bitter acidic coffee grounds really reminding me of terribly cold and old Folders. Has a touch of spices mostly nutmeg, no vegital taste and finishes with a mild touch of vanilla extract. Weird pumpkin (porter?) ale
M - Acidic light to medium bodied beer. Not liking the flavor.

Overall a pass on this one the beer is not offensive to drink but the flavor is really lacking in any pumpkin spice or vegital twang. Not getting it again.
