Enjoyed on tap at The Belfry in downtown Kansas City. I love how many beer-centric places are starting to pop up around Kansas City. Speaking of Kansas City, this brew is a KC-only release. Lucky us! Poured into a Boulevard Smokestack style tulip glass.
Appearance - Pours a slightly hazy amber with orangish highlights. Atop the body sits an off-white head about a finger thick and with a consistency that reminds me of cappucino foam, with lots of smaller bubbles and very few large bubbles. Retention is short, with the head fading away to a thin line of foam around the edge of the liquid. Sparse but visible lacing here and there to hint at the levels of the liquid between drinks.
Smell - A pleasant blend of wintery spice and slight fruitiness up front, and underscored by a hint of natural sweetness from the honey. The fruitiness isn't very specific, but instead is the kind of generic phenolic fruitiness you often get from the yeast profile in a saison. I wish there was a little more funkiness to provide some depth and character of this brew, but as is, it's a nice take on the style, even if a little polite for my taste.
Taste - The spice and fruit from the yeast definitely works better with the taste than the aroma, as now the honey provides a nice sweet smoothness to compliment the hints of ginger and clover. Again, I wish there were a bit of musty funk, or even a little more dryness, but it's still a pleasant brew. Some citric notes provide a bit of balance to cut through what might otherwise be a cloying sweetness.
Mouthfeel - Body on the light side of medium, with the spices and honey lending a slightly viscous feel to the brew. Moderate carbonation and a sweet finish.
Overall, a nice brew for the right mood or occasion, but if I'm choosing a saison, I tend to prefer those that are much drier and funkier than this one. Glad to have tried it, but I won't probably lose a lot of sleep if they don't brew it again.

Pours clear and golden with almost no lacing, almost glows. A mild cinnamon aroma, cloves and other spices. Bitter and somewhat hollow flavor, a little spice but not as forward as the aroma. High carbonation, leaves the mouth dry. Not a bad Farmhouse Ale; I expected more body and flavor but if you like your Saisons extra dry, its worth a try.
