Pours a translucent dark brown with two fingers of khaki foam. Head retention is good, with a layer of khaki foam lingering on top for a long while. Aroma is rye, cinnamon, cardamon, nutmeg, toffee, caramel, molasses, maple syrup, and barrel. It smells sweet, with the spices rounding and balancing it out. Very little hop shows through, but hits a spicy, sticky note. Malts are roasty, toasty, bready, and caramely. Flavor profile is toffee, caramel, molasses, maple syrup, cinnamon, nutmeg and rye. Beyond these sugary and spicy complexities is firm roasty, toasty, caramely malts with barrel character. Light sticky hop residue lightly counteracts the malts, although the flavor profile as a whole leans towards 'sweet'. Rye helps shore this up and keeps the sweetness from running away. Mouth feel is still, with a soft, lightly-bubbly texture, finishing lightly dry. It has a medium thickness. Overall, sugary, but still balanced. The rye cuts the sweetness just enough to keep it from lingering on the tongue, thus keeping this from being pulled from the 'beer' menu and placed on the 'dessert' menu.

Served in a 15.5oz Speigalau tulip from a 22oz bottle.

Volume 3 pours a vivid amber orange color; it is quite a beautiful beer. Not much in the way of head. Smells heavily of rye, with hints of oak and vanilla. The light hop aroma is earthy. The alcohol has mellowed significantly from when this one was first bottled. Now it tastes rich and slightly sweet, but not boozy. Very drinkable for how thick it feels and for the ABV.

this is a great beer, but it still could benefit from a little more time in the cellar. the abv is really prominent in nose and taste, its sweet and it burns, a hard beer to drink much of, especially when it warms up even a little bit, but the intense flavors and the heavy rye are awesome, so its a bit of give and take here. a murky amber color, thick without a ton of head. rye wine is not a style we see enough of, and this is a good one, the spice of the rye, the raw nature of it along with some toast, it must be a high percentage of the mash, and while it might not account for the sweetness, it certainly is the dominant malt flavor in here. i like the rye on rye aspect, with some of the heat of the rye whiskey also coming though. less of the bourbon corn and vanilla thing, which would definitely be too much here. instead its spice again, a little harsh on purpose, and the oak, which mellows the feel but not the flavor. this is a thick beer, almost like a glaze or something, oaky and mapley and boozy. it sits heavy too, but the flavor is fantastic. this is a bottle to share a couple of ways, and a great beer from these guys, but maybe hang on to it in the cellar a little longer before cracking it and see if it relaxes at all...
