Notes/Commercial Description:
The Centennial hop is the centerpiece of our American Red Ale. Reprise pushes the limits of a single hop with an amazing bouquet and stunning bitterness all the way through. The citrus character provides an experience you will want to repeat. Reprise is crimson in color with aromas of citrus fruit and biscuit malt.

22 oz bottle. Pours hazy reddish amber with a big fluffy off white head that retains well and laces the glass.

The aroma is piney grapefruity centennial hops with some sweet nutty malts.

The flavor is nutty malts with some fruity bitterness but subdued hop flavor. The mouthfeel is medium bodied and quite watery.

Overall, a decent hoppy red.

4 Hands Reprise Centennial Red Ale
22 oz. long-neck brown "bomber" bottle; no apparent freshness dating
$5.99 @ Whole Foods, Plymouth Meeting, PA

4 Hands has let me down with the first beer I've tried from them. Looking at the bottle I noticed that the liquid level was way up in the neck of the bottle, about an inch below the cap. As it was cold and had not been jostled about I didn't think much of it though. Upon opening it the gushing began. I quickly got it into the kitchen sink where it spewed out quite a bit of it's contents. I was able to carefully pour a few ounces at a time, but for the most part it just foamed up. It was only after 10 minutes or more that I was able to get an almost full pint.

Holding it to the light I found it quite cloudy. I happened to have a Paulaner HefeWeizen sitting nearby and viewed them side-by-side. The 4Hands was by far more cloudy, meaning more yeast, which was later confirmed by the taste. That tenacious carbonation continued, and if I tilted the glass the stream of tiny bubbles racing forth resembled that of a Bavarian Hefe Weizen.

The flavor revealed a caramelish malt, a solid bitterness, and some piney-citrusy hops although their complexity was quite diminished by the solid presence of yeast.

Perhaps I just got a bad bottle. Perhaps it was the last one off of the line and a whole lot of yeast was carried over. In the past that might have been considered as OK, or perhaps even "charming" in the spirit of the microbrew movement, but it's not acceptable by today's standards. There's too much competition between small breweries, and only those that produce the best beers and practice the strictest quality assurance will thrive. If a brewery can't produce a bottle of beer that tastes as they've intended it to, then they probably should not bottle their beer. In the past I would have given them another try, but this time I'll put that money towards another brewery I haven't tried, or one that's tried and true.

was poured in a 4 hands mason style jar. pour was deep amber with a dark creamy head. light lacing.

very fruity with heavy citrus and deep pine.

a bit less fruit in the flavor and a bit more pine and resin. bitter grapefruit and pine syrup. quite malty through out.

mild to moderate carbonation, slightly resin like.

Pours an effervescent copper with 3 fingers of cream colored head. Stellar lacing & head retention, slight hazeyness

S: Pineyness & breadyness

T: Pineyness, a touch of caramel, breadyness & grapefruit up front. Dryness, biscuitty malt, a hint of aspirin, more pine & breadyness, plus astringency once warm. Finishes with pine & grapefruit, plus woody hops, plus aspirin & biscuitty malt

MF: Medium bodied, slight carbonation, thins out as this warms; okay balance at best

Started out like gangbusters, but just fell apart after it warmed up. Drinkable, but not one I would buy again, too disjoinnted

Crystal clear ruby red color with a decent white head and md lacing.

It had a nice citrus hoppy nose to it and, as expected, a nice caramel malt sweetness.

Great balance between the malt and hoppy bite. Citrus and pine.

Medium and smooth mouthfeel with moderate carbonation.

I found it to be a real solid hoppy red.
