Berliner Weissbier |  3.50% ABV

Availability: Summer

Notes/Commercial Description:
The name Prussia originates from Frederick the Great. Frederick was trained to brew this very delicate style of beer and later became the King of Prussia. Our interpretation of the Berliner Weisse style is very traditional. Prussia pours a hazy straw hue with a nice clean tart finish. Enjoy alone or with flavored syrup.

A - Poured out a hazy, golden yellow color with a small, very bubbly, white head of foam. It left sudsy trails of foam on the glass.

S - It smelled tart and citrusy with a touch of wheat and spices.

T - It tasted slightly tart with some spiciness. Some cracked wheat flavor.

M - It was crisp and sharp with a very subtle pucker-factor. A light to medium bodied ale.

O - This is a great sessionable brew. Another very tasty brew by 4 Hands.

Massive frothy head after the pour does subside after about 60 seconds it almost entirely vanishes. Pale golden straw color and very cloudy. Aroma of pale wheat and pear like aroma. The mouthfeel is fairly carbonated and almost has a soda pop like consistency, but is also fairly brisk and refreshing. Fruity, yet tart and highly carbonated. A summer refresher.

Bottle (2012)

Thanks for opening this with me, JealousChalice!

Hazy golden with lots of visible carbonation and a moderately sized white head that leaves thin streaks of lacing down the glass.

Mild aroma, but what's here is very much to style: wheat, some acidic, sour character, a bit of lemon, and white fruit.

The flavor is similar, with wheat and lemon characterisitcs dominating, and a very mild sour component.

Medium bodied with high carbonation. Near-perfect for the style and incredibly drinkable.

A very straight-forward, incredibly drinkable Berliner.

Pours a slightly hazed amber with a sliver of beige head. Stays effervescent, near zero head retention & lacing

S: Hay, tartness, slight hints of dirt & that's about it

T: Tartness, hay & dryness up front. Faint golden delicious apple notes as this warms, plus tartness, a little bit of pear too. Finishes dry, tart & fruitty

MF: Light bodied with slight carbonation, slightly wet

Super refreshing & fairly spot on for the style, a bit too clean perhaps

Light hazy straw color. Small little head that reduces quickly. Some spritzy, champagne-like carbonation. Nothing special.

Smell is wheat, some lemon, acidic tartness, a bit of a light cider smell. Not particularly complex, but very tasty smelling.

Taste is some light granny smith apple, lemon, wheat, kind of grainy malty backbone. I wish the tartness was a bit more pronounced, but this is really tasty.

Mouthfeel is a little thin, dry, well carbonated, very lively. Great mouthfeel, just what I want for a summer beer.

The drinkability on this is nuts. It's not the most complex, but it's a really great summer beer. Very refreshing and light, perfect for those 100 degree days.

Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station--first place to tap this new offering from 4 Hands in the Kansas City area. It was served in a large glass chalice out of a bartop cask.

Appearance - Body is a cloudy yellow color with a milky characteristic to it. Faint white head is minimal and dissipates to a rim of bubbly foam around the edge of the glass. Little to no lacing.

Smell - Grainy, wheaty characteristics are punctuated by a vein of acidity and tart, but it is definitely subtle. Some light lemony elements as well.

Taste - As is so often the case, this one tastes like a Hefeweizen that someone poured lemon juice into, but more balanced. There is a bit of sourness there, but honestly, it's too faint to label as "sourness" in truth. More of a slight tartness really.

Mouthfeel - Medium-to-light body with low carbonation. Very easy-drinking and the acidity provides some refreshing aspect. The low ABV also makes for a nice break in between "bigger" beers.

Overall, another BW that is tasty, but doesn't seem to be as sour/tart as what I've heard about the style. That being said, maybe what I've heard is wrong, because this is now the fourth Berliner Weisse I've tried, and they all had a similar, tart-but-not-sour taste to them. I'd definitely have this one again.

Pours a hazy, yellow/gold color. 1/6 inch head of a white color. Poor retention and poor lacing. Smells of lemon, wheat, slight pale malt, and a hint of sweet malt. Fits the style of a Berliner Weissbier. Mouth feel is sharp and clean, with an average carbonation level. There is also a noticeable sourness. Tastes of strong wheat, strong lemon, and slight pale malt. Overall, except for a very weak appearance, good body and feel.
