Notes/Commercial Description:
This beer is retired; no longer brewed.

Foundation is an ale brewed in collaboration with Gerard Craft, Josh Galliano, Kevin Nashan, Kevin Willmann, and Salt. This collaboration was brought to life by the James Beard nominations, but truly reflects the foundation of culinary excellence that St. Louis offers. Foundation is a blonde ale brewed with fresh ginger, basil, lemon balm, and peach juice. These ingredients were selected in tandem with a list of seasonal ingredients used by all of the chefs and restaurants involved in this project.

A - Poured out a pale, hazy golden color with a one-finger, white head of bubbly foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled of basil, peach and lemon. Some caramel sweetness in the background.

T - Very fruity and floral with the basil, lemon and peach really coming through. It also had a good deal of spiciness with caramel, too.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a clean finish.

O - This is a great beer. They blended some unique flavors for a great taste.

pour as a light golden yellow, inch or so of head. some light retention.

basil for sure up front and some lighter herbal tones.

pretty basil forward, some other herbal zest that is a bit harder to pin point even with knowing what went into it.

mild to moderate carbonation. pretty smooth and easy

good, but at times was a bit too much basil. paired well with dinner vs. by itself.

Poured from the bottle a cloudy grey-peach color with a finger of bright white head.

Nice aroma of peach, ginger, herbal notes, light grains and lemon zest.

Interesting but light on flavor. The basil was first followed by peach, tropical fruit, grainy malts and table salt. Overall, the taste is a bit on the subtle side. Nice hint of spice in the finish.

Lighter bodied and crisp with a moderate carbonation.

I liked the concept of this beer more than the execution. The flavors were more subtle than I would have hoped to make it exceptional.

Presentation: 22oz brown pop-top; nice label. This blonde ale is brewed with lemon balm, basil, ginger, and peach juice. Can you say intriguing (if a little scary?)

Appearance: Just slightly hazy, and capped by a beautiful fluffy white cap that shows good retention.

Smell: Immediately this strikes me as both bold and quite unusual. In terms of the specialty ingredients, the only one I really pick up on is spicy basil, and it's rather predominant in this beer. There's also a subtle citrus note, likely from the lemon balm. Intriguing, but the idea of 'basil beer' is still a bit of a stretch for me. For me, the basil's a bit strong here.

Taste: The taste, on the other hand, is more to my liking. There's certainly basil there, but it's softer and more floral than suggested by the nose. Not really getting a lot in terms of ginger or peach, but there is a subtle (pleasant) fruitiness and floral charater. A ghostly hint of pale malt, as well as a firm, but gentle, hop bitterness. Honestly, this comes together far more successfully than I would have thought possible, considering the ingredients.

Mouthfeel: Light-medium bodied.

Overall: I was unsure about buying this, but for $6.99, and considering I'd already bought a loaf of Panera's tomato and basil bread, I figured it'd make an interesting pairing. Just from the nose, I was a bit turned off by this (esp. how present the basil is), but the flavors are actually quite nice. Would I buy this regularly? No; it's far too esoteric of a beer for that. But this would be excellent for pairing with various summer fare, light Italian dishes, and perhaps spicy dishes as well. It also paired well with the tomato basil loaf! Overall, after tasting this and their Prussia Berlinerweiss, I'm excited to see what 4 Hands has for us in the future!

Poured into a pint glass from a 22oz bottle.

Pours a very nice hazy golden color with some straw hints. Looks like a saison.

Aroma starts off with basil. What else? Very interesting. Grassy and herbal like smelling a spice rack. There is some lemony notes in the nose as well and some grainy notes as well. Slightly bready and light aroma.

Flavor starts off similar to the nose. Spicy and grassy beginning with basil notes a plenty. Taste like you soaked basil in a pilsner. There is a nice slight hoppy and grassy notes on the back end with slight citrus notes. There is also a nice lemony note to the brew. I can definitely pick up on the ginger, slightly spicy and fresh. Finishes earthy and herbal. Mouthfeel is light and refreshing with nice crisp carbonation. Effervescent.

Overall a very interesting brew. Spice, ginger, basil notes and some nice lemony hints round this beer out. It is ok but not amazing. God for summer days.

a golden ale brewed with peaches, lemon balm, ginger, and basil. its one of those rare beers that takes you somewhere else. this takes me to my grandmothers kitchen with the marinara sauce on full boil. tons of basil in the nose of this lovely sunny brew with a tall and lasting white head. the nose is all basil, warming in a a way, although this beer is totally refreshing. peaches not so much in nose or taste, but the lemon balm and ginger add nice subtle elements to the basil and yeast, which is quite spicy for a basic golden ale. this is a full on summer beer, with herbal grace and a inventive fruity finish. this beer is really well integrated, but you can still tease out each component, which i really like. feel is light and airy, with dancing carbonation and a nice creamy medium body. one of the best 4 hands brews ive had, which is saying a lot because this place is fantastic.

Up from Jacksonville FL and stopped in at the brewery.

A: half finger head with nice lacing on a hazy dull golden body.

S: very floral, lemongrass, wheat ad pals malts.

T: this one is herbal and spicey with fresh flowers and grass notes. Mild pale malt base.

M: light body and moderate to high carbonation.

Overall: the floral and herbal character isn't overdone but this one my not be for everyone. A unique brew.
