Black in color with little penetration to light. A fingernail of khaki foam is present around the rim. Wonderful aroma of smoke and just a faint whiff of maple syrup. The flavor is loaded with smoked malt,rye,and maple syrup. It becomes too sweet as it warms and you have more. The mouth is lightly sticky and dry. This beer should be paired with bacon.

The Smoked Pigasus was a great porter from 4 Hands. This beer poured a rich opaque dark with slight ruby hue and had tan head that laced. The scent was chocolate, earth, roast and maybe a touch of smoke. The taste was well balanced and followed the scent with mostly roast and peat being present. The mouthfeel was full in body with smooth carbonation. Overall this is a solid porter and I'd drink this again FO SHIZZ!

pours dark black, not thick in any way, light creamy head. bits of lacing.

smoke up front, after a bit mostly light maple syrup and roasted malt, maybe some espresso.

very smoked forward. nice rye bite, but with a sweetness through out. the maple syrup is very faint. charred and burnt finish.

light feel but a moderate carbonation. fills it out a bit.

i was pleased, this was pretty fun and easy to drink. very forward but never overpoering or dull.

650 mL bottle poured into a snifter.

Appearance - Deep brown. Transparent at the edges. Nice off white head. Decent surface retention.

Smell - Smokey and nicely chocolatey. Pretty much it but it's nice.

Taste - Less impressive. Much smokier. Less chocolatey, but still present. Bitter in the finish from the malt.

Mouthfeel - Light bodied. Highly carbonated. Disappointing.

Overall - Decent flavors, nice smokiness. The body doesn't sustain the flavors though.

Pours an effervescent mahogany with 2 fingers of fluffed up tan head. Good head retention & above average lacing

S: Smokeyness & roastyness

T: Roastyness, cocoa, dryness, faint smokeyness up front. Smokeyness mixes with cocoa sweetness, caramel & a little maple syrup as this warms, picking up a little lactose sourness with the cocoa. Finishes with cocoa, faint caramel & smokeyness, plus a little dryness

MF: Medium bodied, firm carbonation, thins out a touch when warm

Drinks pretty easy, a solid porter

Dark brown body with a light mohagany hue around the edges. Short tan head with no lacing.

It had a great smokey scent coming from it, as to be expected. It had notes of both tabacco and wood charcoal lumps. There was a slight maple presence, too. Really good aromatics of a smoked beer.

If you like smoke flavor, you'll like this beer. The taste is heavy on the tobacco and bbq smoke with a light sweet finish. The smoke lingers for quite a while.

Mouthfeel was medium bodied with good carbonation.

I really enjoyed this beer and the smoke was done just right for my liking. The smoke has a strong presence but if you're into that, try this one.

Appearance: blackish brown light brown head, finger, minimal lace and retention.

Aroma: smoky and meaty, chocolate, light spiciness, hint of maple, roast, hint of wood.

Taste: toast, chocolate, roasted malts, smoked wood, grainy, minerals, earthy spice note.

***Body is a bit thin and carbonation has a bit of a prickly texture. Aside though, it does have some nice smoky and meaty qualities, and is an overall enjoyable smoked porter.

Given to me in the driveway to celebrate the Royals 2014 Wild Card victory over the A's by my homie Small Paul. Side poured with standard vigor from the bottle into a Sam Adams glass.

Appearance - Pours a very dark, porter-style brown to black with a light tan head of about one finger. Just what I would expect. Love the name, packaging, and marketing of the brew.

Smell - Bready malts, sweetness, and a bit of chocolate are in the mix. I got a faint hint of smoke and none of the maple.

Taste - Much the same as the nose. Very malty, nice sweetness to it. Roasted malts and a bit of cooking vanilla are there as well. Again, not much on the maple or even the chocolate.

Mouthfeel - Thick and chewy, finishes smooth. Medium carbonation, big body. A bit of bitter on the palate at the end.

Overall - Worth a try, although I won't buy it again. Love the name, love the packaging and marketing, beer is mediocre to slightly above average.

Black with a tiny teacup pig sized head. Smells like maple and milk chocolate. Flavor again plays up with milk chocolate with some maple sweet highlights. Maple can throw off a lot of fruity esters and I like the Pegasus kept it more sweet caramel maple. Best part of this beer is the full, smooth mouthfeel. Almost milk stout like.

For such an array of heavy hitting ingredients like smoke, rye and maple syrup it's a very tame, balanced beer. Hardly any smoke and no rye spice. Don't expect the heavy hitter indicated by the ingredient list.

Appearance - dark brown, nearly opaque, with a solid cinnamon colored head, typical of the style

Smell - very subdued. Mostly dark roasted malts and some maple sweetness from the syrup addition. I didn't get much smoke aroma at all, which is disappointing

Taste - initially I get some maple syrup, but that gives way to burnt flavors. The finish is extremely bitter from the charred malt.

Mouthfeel - full bodied. The intense, lingering bitterness is very unpleasant.

Overall - This beer was very disappointing. Very little smoke flavor and the bitter, charred malt was overwhelming.

Enjoyed on tap at Bier Station in Kansas City. Poured into a small Belgian style tulip glass.

Appearance - Pour yields a one-finger head of incongruent tan foam across the top of the body. A mix of big soap-like bubbles, fine, foamy microbubbles and some in-between. Retention isn't terribly great, and it recedes to leave a frothy mix of bubbles and pockmarks about a half finger thick, but more dense on the edges of the glass, like snowdrifts. Tan, beery snowdrifts. Lacing is slight, but observable. Beneath the foam sits a body of dark, dark brown bordering on black--like the bark of a walnut tree sitting deep within a heavily wooded forest.

Smell - Notes of baker's chocolate, cooked bacon and a hint of maple sweetness, but I don't know that the sweetness would have been recognizable as maple without having known that this beer has maple syrup added. Some more subtle notes of dulce de leche and caramel and a more generic smokiness--like the way your clothes smell long after standing around a campfire. Noticeable, but not the same overpowering aroma that you get from actually standing by the fire.

Taste - The smoke isn't quite as aggressive on the taste as it was on the smell. Which is not to say that it was at all aggressive in the aroma--just that it's more of a background element in the taste. More up front are bittersweet chocolate and cocoa nibs as well as a maple sweetness that is more overtly maple-y this time around. The rye comes through as well with some spicy kick to complement the other smoky-sweet--and even bitter--flavors. In addition to the dark chocolate notes, there are more generic roasted malt components, like you'd expect from a porter. Like slightly charred toast.

Mouthfeel - Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. Finish is a faint blend of smoke, spice and sweet. There is a hint of that cloying type of feel at first, but it's far from overpowering--maybe viscous would be a better way of describing it.

Overall, this has to be one of the better smoked beers on the market. They manage to incorporate those bacon-like and smoking wood aromas, but pair them with sweeter notes like chocolate and maple syrup to create a wonderfully balanced smoked beer. Maybe not ideal for the true rauchbier aficionados, but for this layperson, it's just about ideal.

Smoke? Check. Pun in the name? Double-check. Let's do this shit, said I in the beer aisle. This stuff pours a nearly opaque midnight sienna topped by a finger or so of sandy suds. The nose comprises dark hickory smoke, cocoa powder, roasted malts, and a touch of brown sugar. The taste brings in more of the same, with the smoke thoroughly up front and sticking throughout and the brown sugar taking on a more molasses-y turn. Things seem overly dry and nearly harsh, though, as the smoke and roast aren't very forgiving. The body is a stolid medium, with a moderate carbonation and a rather drying finish. Overall, a nice enough smoked porter, but I felt it was a tad too dry and overly-roasted to truly shine. Still, I wouldn't shy away from a repeat tasting sometime in the future.

Pours a dark brown color. 1/4 inch head of a tan color. Decent retention and decent lacing. Smells of roasted malt, sweet malt, slight smoke, slight hop, and a hint of wheat. Fits the style of an American Porter. Mouth feel is sharp and crisp, with an average carbonation level. Tastes of coffee, hops, sweet malt, roasted malt, hint of wheat, and a hint of yeast. Overall, good aroma, blend, and body. The strength of smoke in body and aroma was disappointing, as was the overall appearance.

On tap at 44 Stone in Columbia, MO.

A - Poured an opaque, jet-black color with a small, light brown head of bubbly foam. It left sudsy trails lace on the glass.

S - It smelled very smokey and bacon-like.

T - Bacon-like taste. It really did have bacon taste. Smokey with a sweet maltiness for balance.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a clean finish.

O - This is a very good smoked porter. Love the mild smoke and bacon flavor.

Deep cola brown/black pour with a decent little frothy brown head. Head starts huge, but quickly dissipates down to just a nice little cap over the top of it all. Decent retention, minimal lacing.

I vacillate on my feelings here. Initially I LOVED it. Roasty chocolate with a touch of maple and a warming note that I interpret as the smoked rye. Really Inviting. The complexity and character fades pretty quickly, though, by the time I'm a couple of sips in the aroma is pretty mellow and unexciting. As I continue, I become more aware of a lactic sweetness running through the middle of it all.

After the initial sniff, I was very excited. After that build up, the first sip is kind of a let down. Letting it stand on its own, though, you start to see some of the complexity creep back into it. Very soft intro, it does not just walk up and smack you up side the head, it kind of lulls you into complacency with the roasty chocolate and light maple sweetness. Soon enough, though all the friends come jumping out of the woods and piling into the back seat as the roast turns to a much more imposing bitter char that plays off the rye spice well to give it a decided kick towards the end. The smokey notes accent this further. The finish is bitter with just traces of the maple/chocolate that greeted you running down its chin. It's got a grainy characteristic to it that I can't decide how I feel about. Carbonation is a little bit pricklier and the body is somewhat thinner than I like, especially in something like this. Solid components, but if they continued to fiddle around a little to iron out the wrinkles, it could become amazing

Appearance (4.5) : Very dark, with a very foamy, light-brown head. Very inviting.

Smell (5.00) : Oaty, Smoky, a hint of Sweet. This is a very complex smell but it's all tied together and made into a very simple smell. You can actually pick up on the syrup smell as well, surprisingly.

Taste (4.00) : Very dark and smoky, the maple syrup isn't very prevalent but becomes more prevalent as I drink.

Mouthfeel (4.00) : Leaves an extremely smoky flavor, I feel as though I'm inside a barbecue pit. The carbonation is also just right for this style of beer.

Overall (4.25) : Just an amazing beer in my opinion. Definitely a new favorite, especially around barbecue season.

Poured into a pint glass from a 22oz bottle.

Pours a nice dark color with some slight caramel edges. There is a nice light tan colored head that is dense and sticky and leaves some nice lacing.

Aroma of a porter. Roasted dark malts with some slight coffee. Definitely some smoke is perceived. There is some slight caramel in the nose.

Flavor follows the nose but it is more lively. Starts off with some delicious smoked malt notes. Smokey and roasted. Some coffee with some dark cocoa notes and bitterness. The maple blends well and slightly offsets the smoke with some nice sweetness. Brown sugar notes and caramel are present. There is also some mild cocoa powder sweetness. Very nice. Im not the biggest fan of big smokey beers but this one is not too bad and especially because all the flavors blend so well and the smoke doesn't overwhelm. Mouthfeel is medium and roasty with a nice dry finish.

I was pretty pleasantly surprised with this brew. I know 4 Hands can make a great beer but I'm not the biggest fan of heavily smoked porters. However, this is very well balanced. Yes. There is smokey and roasted malt notes but there is alos a nice underlain cocoa and sweet maple undertone that brings this full circle. Nice job.

Big crater on the pour, tiny pocks from burst carbonation in the thin, but lasting head. Completely opaque - not black, but as dark brown as it gets.

Roasted smokey malts, sweet maple syrup come through the nose - unique for sure. Smells like breakfast eminating from the pint glass.

Lots of smoke on this one - like sitting campside with a fire spitting under your nose, rising up, filling your cavities. Some sweetness, but not near as much as the nose.

Creamy, lightly carbonated, setting with heavy smoke on the tongue.

Smoke and hints of sweetness - enoyable, but wishing there was more complexity here.

Pours a dark amber-brown with a small cream colored head. Head recedes rather fast but leaves some moderate lacing behind.

Aroma of rye malt and smoke. Some caramel and maybe a bit of bacon. Just a hint of coffee. Nothing is particularly strong.

Tastes of smoke, caramel, and molasses. Roast/burnt flavors reminiscent of the bark on a smoked pork butt. Smoke lingers on the tongue. Nice sweetness which counters the smoke and burnt notes.

Creamy medium-thick mouth feel. Taste lingers on the tongue.

Very good beer which could use some increased intensity in the nose. Love the creamy mouth feel.

this was good, a porter made with smoked rye malt and maple syrup. having just come from square one and having their maple stout though, i thought this was a let down. the pour is rich and chocolatey brown with an inch of mocha head. the nose is overpowered by the smoke and spice from the rye, and none of the maple really comes through. the same is also true of the flavor unfortunately, which as a smoked porter is excellent. the smoke isnt too strong, the rye is really potent, and the feel is smooth and creamy. id just like to see more maple flavor worked in with those other two big bold characters. still a tasty drink, nice this time of year. the use of rye in this is perfect, so any enthusiast of that should give this a go.

From bottle 6 months. Smells of smoky chocolate and toffee. Thin head and body. Flavor is chocolate, toffee, less smoke than the nose. Body is thinner that expected. I apptecoate the lack of booziness. Not getting any maple though. Solid beer.

Pours Dark brown nearly black with little light making it through and a one finger khaki head that retains nicely.

Smell is malt forward with rye coming first then more dominate roasted chocolaty malt following. Very faint aromas of maple come in near the end of the inhale but are easy to miss. Not a whole lot of smoke detectable in the aroma.

Taste is really good. Rich chocolaty malt is forward and is blends with caramel, sharp rye and a very faint charcoal smokey flavor. Slight vanilla like sweetness balances the sharpness of the malt and charcoal flavors but Maple is much lighter in the taste and is slightly hard to detect.

Mouthfeel is good. Medium bodied and moderate carbonation. Mild charcoal bitterness balances the stickiness and sweetness of the malt. Rye is a little sharp.

Up from Jacksonville FL and stopped in at the brewery.

A: half finger head on a near jet black body. Excellent thick lacing.

S: Milk chocolate, roasted malt and a nice amount of coffee.

T: roasted malts, coffee, smoked malts. Simple but very good.

M: medium to full body and moderate carbonation. Semi dry finish.

Overall: this one has a lot of great smoked and roasted flavors none of which are overwhelming. This is surprisingly drinkable for the style. Another excellent brew from this brewey.
