Served from tap into a sampler tumbler. Poured a deep dark red-orange brown with a half finger off-white head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly. Maintained excellent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, spices, roasted malt, and subtle hairspray. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark chocolate, roasted malt, and bread. It had a light feel on the palate with mild carbonation. Hairspray on the aroma again!? Oh shit…. I have gotten this aroma before in brews from the past and absolutely hated them. However, this one wasn’t too bad surprisingly. The hairspray aspect stayed in the aroma luckily and left a really well balanced roasty and bready flavor to enjoy. There was also a little bit of bitterness mixed in with the dark chocolate aspect lingering around. While not my favorite from the style, it was still above average.

Tap at Birdsong.
Leather brown pour. Good layer of white head.
Aroma, toasted malt, molasses, some herbal notes, hops.
Taste, Matches aroma. Toasted malty caramel. Earthy tones, leather peat. Tea, cocoa, some hop notes. Almost a little coffee roast in the finish.
Heavy side of light bodied. Moderate carb, drinks very well. I'd get it again.

On tap at Sir Ed's. Pours a dark, slightly hazy, brown with a finger of light tan head. The smell is mostly roast malts and some biscuit/bread smell. Some sweetness is there, though it's muted. The taste is solid - perfect balance of sweet caramel and earthy hops. A little more of that biscuit flavor (almost like some of the New Belgium beers, but not nearly as pronounced). Mouthfeel and body of this one are great; more substantial than I expect for the style, almost like a less creamy porter.
Overall a very solid beer, and one that I'm happy to see becoming a standard at area bars and restaurants.

I'm a bit confused by the previous reviews of this beer. The only negative comment out of 2 reviews is about a hairspray aroma. I've had this beer on 4-5 occasions and can only conclude that the hairspray came from the reviewer's environment. This is one of the better brown ales that I've had and I've researched this style extensively. It has a good balance among chocolate/sweetness/roast characteristics. If you like brown ale, you definitely need to check this one out.

Had a 6 oz taster at Dandelion market in Charlotte, an under-rated place not even listed yet on Beer Advocate...
Looked and tasted more like a porter than a brown ale to me. Very dark with a nice mocha colored head. Good roasted notes in the aroma, and immediately upon tasting, strong roasted coffee notes come through. Good mouthfeel, excellent overall.
