On tap at World of Beer Raleigh. Served in a pint glass.

A - orangish amber with a little white head; no retention

S - citrusy, grapefruit, lightly bready

T - grapefruit, citrusy, bready, piny, bitter finish

M - medium bodied, smooth, well carbonated

This is delicious. There is perfect balance between malts and hops. The hop character is citrusy up front and finishes with a light, piny bitterness. The malt is lightly bready and holds up nicely to the heavy hops. This is definitely worth a try.

Picked up a growler from the brewery. Poured into a shaker pint, the beer is a hazy, orange-brown coloring with a tall, chunky, foamy, clingy, off-white head. Great lacing along the glass. Aromas of resinous pine pitch, pepper spice, caramel, lemon zest, cut grass, and subtle grapefruit. Very balanced nose, with a slight lean towards bitter. Flavors are bitter and citrus tart forward, with a heavy dose of grapefruit and tangerine, all on a richly sweet caramel backbone. Cut grass, moss, and pine pitch provide a solid dose of hops resin characteristics, bittering up this beast. Smooth, slightly dry feel on a fairly light body, with a bitter, dry, and citrus tart aftertaste. The finish has more of the grapefruit linger, and leaves a dry, slightly astringent feel on the palate. Very solid, tasty, big IPA.

on-tap at (gasp) Jeff's Bucket Shop on Montford

I think this is somehow my first Birdsong beer - I've been overlooking them for years until this fateful night. My first impression was that this was not a beer that deserved to be overlooked - a classically crafted IPA - citrus forward and oily with a moderate stinging bitterness. The malt bill supports this nicely without being too noticeable. This was good - the rest of the birdsong lineup will have to wait until my next eastward venture though.
